OPTIshell Workshop


This workshop covers the concept of structural art and explores how structures can embody elegance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness simultaneously. The focus will be on timber elastic gridshells, with a specific emphasis on asymptotic gridshells, which represent promising systems in this field. Participants will learn to use parametric tools for designing shapes capable of serving as structural shells. The workshop will also cover the basics of structural analysis for such forms, enabling attendees to transform their designs into impressive, structurally sound gridshell structures.

During the workshop, we will delve into practical aspects of design preparation for digital fabrication. Participants will gain hands-on experience in testing materials and using laser cutting techniques. Northern Star by Lasvit


In the heart of bustling central Hong Kong stands The Holborn, a residential building that serves as a beacon of modern living amidst the city's dynamic landscape. Among its many charms lies a captivating feature known as Northern Star, an ingenious lighting and site-specific installation that illuminates the building's lobby with a celestial grace.

Crafted by Rado Hrcka, a visionary 3D designer from Lasvit, Northern Star embodies the fusion of artistry and technology. Using Rhino and employing a block-in-block methodology, Hrcka meticulously brought his vision to life. "The initial block is the glass component itself and the second block is 1/8 of the whole composition. The 1/8 block is copied 7 times around the middle base point, making up the whole design", explains Hrcka. "After that, the editing is done in real time. It is the fastest and easiest way to work on this type of composition and it enables us to have perfect control and prevent the collision of components." 

The installation isn't just a mere fixture; it symbolizes warmth and guidance, designed to welcome residents home with open arms. As one steps into The Holborn's lobby, they are greeted by the gentle glow of Northern Star, serving as a friendly celestial guide that beckons them towards the comforts of home.

VisualARQ 3 beta is now available

This first beta version works on Rhino 8 and is only available for users with a VisualARQ license. While in beta, only the Rhino 8 installer will be published, but the final release will be available for both Rhino 7 and Rhino 8 (for Windows).

Some of the new features include a level manager, a table report panel, buildings with boundaries, reflected ceiling plans, guides, a clash report panel, a profiles manager, and many more!

FABRICATE 2024 - CITA Copenhagen (Denmark) - 4-6 April


FABRICATE 2024 will be hosted CITA, Royal Danish Academy, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-6 April 2024.

Since its inception, FABRICATE has welcomed thousands of international delegates to conferences over two days in London (2011), Zurich (2014), Stuttgart (2017), and Online (2020), acting as a global forum for the exploration of the radical new opportunities for design in manufacturing, computation, material science, and assembly.

From more than 1000 submissions, only 32 projects are selected for each conference publication and 16 for each event. The publication series is Open Access and all four existing volumes have been downloaded over 290,000 times from UCL Press. Uniquely, recognizing the multiple interconnected challenges facing academia, practice, manufacturing, construction, and industry, only built projects are accepted.

As core members of the FABRICATE community, Mette and Phil have profiled deep-seated interests in the infrastructures of computational modeling producing novel methods of computing, fabricating, and designing architecture for over two decades. With a special focus on inter-sector dialogue and knowledge exchange, their aim for FABRICATE 2024 is to question what the future of computational design and fabrication can be. They ask how the pressures for a new sustainable design agenda will challenge the AEC industry. They ask how cutting-edge computational design can inform the emergence of a new sensitivity in which renewable, regenerative, and restorative design logics are prioritized, and they aim focus on questions of resource consciousness and bio-based design and fabrication strategies.

This Simply Rhino video focuses on Rhino 8 for Mac and looks at the performance enhancements offered by this latest Rhino version (v8) and the interface changes it brings.


It’s fair to say that the performance of Rhino 7 for Mac lagged significantly behind its Windows counterpart, most notably Viewport responsiveness and Raytraced rendering times.
