Fourth Computational AEC meeting online

Open-Source Software in AEC

Join Computational AEC  online as three AEC experts involved in open-source software shine light on the potential of open-source in our industry:

  • Ehsan Iran-Nejad - Rhino.Inside Revit and the role of documentation in an open-source project. Ehsan is both an architect and a software developer. He's currently working at Robert McNeel & Associates on the open-source Rhino.Inside Revit project.
  • Dion Moult - Open-source, open-data, and their role in the built environment. Dion is also an architect and a software developer. He's currently working as Emerging Digital Engineering Manager at Lendlease. Dion's recent open-source project is BlenderBIM.
  • Jon Mirtschin - BIM: open vs. closed. Jon Mirtschin graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering/Science from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He worked as a structural engineer for ten years before starting Geometry Gym in 2009. Geometry Gym develops BIM software tools specifically for Model Exchange using openBIM standards such as IFC. The team at ThinkParametric has announced a new online course. Learn a new skill today!

Rhino.Inside - Design to Production workflow

In this course, Oliver Thomas, BIM specialist at BIG, teaches you how to streamline the workflow from design to production using Rhino.Inside.

After testing Rhino.Inside at BIG and being impressed with the potential it offers, it was quickly rolled out as one of the core tools for future projects.

“In this course, we will look at the implementation of Rhino.Inside Revit workflows, early in the design process to transition from design into documentation. This is enabling our teams to streamline the transition back and forth between our design and documentation worlds, allowing us to utilize each platform's strengths.”

ShapeDiver - Parametric Design For Cloud Applications - April 28-30, 2020

ShapeDiver - Parametric Design For Cloud Applications

April 28-30, 2020
Free online webinar | Limited spaces available

Join this 3-day ShapeDiver online workshop with Edwin Hernández (Grasshopper specialist) and Mathieu Huard (Co-Founder & Head of Product) and learn how to prepare and optimize a Grasshopper definition for cloud applications.

During these online workshops (3 sessions of 90 minutes each), they will give an overview of the cloud tools available within the Rhino+Grasshopper ecosystem (Rhino Compute, Speckle, Swarm, Trinckle, Emarf, Ghshot...). They will also provide help in identifying common design challenges and strategies for all these types of applications:

● Computational efficiency
● Lightweight solutions
● Data management
● Maximizing automation

Mastering these design principles in Grasshopper is the primary goal of this workshop, which is targeting already experienced Grasshopper designers. So if you ever wanted to polish and increase your Grasshopper skills to start a new business or improve your existing one, this is the webinar for you!

The participants will first go through the process of creating and uploading a simple definition to ShapeDiver as a concrete example of how a cloud application based on Grasshopper gets started.
Afterward, in parts 1-3 of the workshop, they will provide advanced training for preparing and optimizing Grasshopper definitions for cloud applications. They will use of some popular tools of the Grasshopper ecosystem (Metahopper, Human, OpenNest, Squid, FabTools...) as well as tools included in the ShapeDiver plugin.

In the last part, they’ll dive into some fundamental use cases for cloud applications based on parametric definitions and build examples using the ShapeDiver online platform, while keeping the focus on high-level implementation principles which apply to any technology leveraging CAD files in the cloud.

Check out the full agenda for this event.

Are you interested in joining this webinar? Head to this link to reserve a place. Limited seats available!

A fun way to learn Grasshopper

To help you learn Grasshopper, McNeel Miami has created SudoHopper3D, a card game to improve the overall understanding of parametric thinking.

SudoHopper3D playfully takes you on a journey through mathematics, algorithms, and basic coding. Players surprisingly learn concepts such as vector geometry and trigonometry. Players also learn problem-solving, logic, and sequential reasoning in a socially interrelated and entertaining environment.

The card game consists of 126 cards for Level 1. Players have the option to download the free PDF file. Print out the cards on your printer to use with the game and videos. Be creative: use FaceTime and web cameras to play with students remotely. You can also order the physical cards online.

In addition to the cards, players may get the Level 1 videos from our Vimeo On Demand page. During the COVID-19 crisis and for an entire year, receive free access to the videos with the code: HELP4EDU. These videos will show you different ways to write the definition that solves each assignment. The videos are available in either English or Spanish.

You can find more ways to solve the assignments on our YouTube channel too:

Assignments from 1-6:
Assignments from 7 to 12:
Assignments from 13 to 18:

Please share comments and images of what your students are achieving with SudoHopper3D and Grasshopper.

Stay safe, stay well, thanks.

Studio 3DX - Cloud BIM and GIS asset management solution

Parametricos created Studio 3DX, a cloud BIM and GIS asset management solution, for architects and engineers to digitally transform their office workflow, for all phases of a building’s life-cycle. From conceptual design to construction and facility management.

With the Studio 3DX you can securely store and visualize your 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) models, which are then geo-coordinated in their context. This solution offers tools for all your team members and clients to analyze the uploaded IFC model and collaborate on your project by creating issues and comments inside the 3D viewer and assign them to the responsible team member. Each project has its own location, as is in real life, but the solution also offers the choice for a different location for each model as well. This allows for the creation of a large masterplan with several buildings in one project location, all in the cloud.

Parametricos aim is to help professionals collaborate remotely and efficiently.

A few days ago, Parametricos collaborated with VisualARQ: Flexible BIM for Rhino 3D and are offering all its users a 100€ discounted price on the Studio 3DX annual subscription.

They would like to extend this offering to a broader Rhino user audience. Anyone interested in their solution can try it out for seven days on https://studio3dx.com. Email Marios Messios for the offering.

SOFiSTiK announces components for bridges

Based on alignment, cross-section information, axis variables, and placements, you can now create 3D parametric models that include realistic 3D geometry and a 100% user-controlled analytical model.

Use this tool as a pre-processor for Bridge Information Modelling and refined Finite Element Analysis.

The SOFiSTiK Grasshopper Toolkit is an extension to Grasshopper. Convert elements like points, curves, or surfaces into structural points, and surfaces. The elements can be attributed with analytical properties like material, cross-section, boundary conditions, or loads. This data can then be directly streamed into a SOFiSTiK project for further analysis and design of the structure.
