So Table by So Concrete

So Table results from an experimental approach using a new 3D concrete printing technology called Selective Paste Intrusion (SPI). Jonáš Kolařík, computational designer at So Concrete, explains that the goal was to create a structure that is spatially rigid yet visually lightweight, taking full advantage of the unique possibilities offered by this method, compared to standard robotic concrete extrusion.

Natural structures, from plant lattices to trabecular bone, inspire the base. As it rises, it branches up into finer and finer elements to support a tempered glass tabletop. The form is fully parametric and easily adapted to different sizes and formats.

Everything is procedurally generated in Grasshopper; the boundary is populated with points in gradual density, which are then connected through several automated and manual optimization steps. The final geometry used for 3D printing is generated using the MultiPipe component, which creates closed SubD geometry with smooth connections and variable thickness.
