Karamba3D online workshop, November 24-26 (McNeel Europe)

Karamba3D Workshop - Introduction to Beam Structures
Tutor: Matthew Tam & Georg Lobe
November 24-26, 2025
10 AM-5 PM CET (Barcelona)
Hosted on Zoom by McNeel Europe

Matthew Tam and Georg Lobe of Karamba3D are offering a workshop aimed at beginner users who want to gain a solid understanding of setting up beam models in Karamba3D. Teaching will be applied to real-world case studies to understand all the basic principles.

After the completion of this course, you will be able to:
  • Have an in-depth understanding of model setup in Karamba3D for beams
  • Set up beam structures parametrically to gain full geometric control
  • Perform simple optimization and form-finding procedures on your geometry
  • Learn how to integrate Karamba3D into your BIM/structural workflows
Day 1 - Introduction
  • Introductory lecture to parametric engineering
  • Parametric structural modeling with beams
  • Defining cross-section and material properties
  • Results retrieval and display for beams
Day 2 – Applications
  • Optimization of cross-sections of beams
  • Introduction to optimization procedures for shape and topology
  • Form-finding procedures
Day 3 – Workflows & Interoperability
  • Debugging models and troubleshooting errors
  • Save states of your Karamba3D model into Rhino for quick versioning
  • Harnessing the power of Speckle to send and receive structural models on the cloud

Course requirements: Prior knowledge of Grasshopper and Rhino is essential. Basic understanding of Karamba3D would be beneficial but not required.

Software requirement: Rhino 8 & Karamba3D 3.1.5
Karamba3D 1-year non-commercial-use licenses will be provided to participants free of charge.

Additional Software: Speckle v2, Revit (optional for interoperability workflow), RFEM, Robot, SCIA (optional for interoperability workflow)

Online course fees: EUR 395 (+VAT). Full-time students and university teachers receive a 50% discount (proof of status required). Please note that we will confirm your seat after your payment has cleared.

Maximum number of participants for each course: 25. If there is no quorum, the course will be canceled 15 days before.

Course language: English

LevelOpt - New topology optimization tool for Rhino and Grasshopper

Cutting-edge Level set optimization meets the flexibility of Grasshopper with FEA Simulation in the loop!

LevelOpt is a topology optimization tool that allows Rhino Grasshopper users to generate high-performance concepts quickly with automated topology optimization.

A user-driven custom optimization option allows users to interject design changes, incorporate starting designs, and fine-tune settings at any stage. Rhino users automatically get access to LevelOpt with the latest version of Intact.Simulation for Rhino Grasshopper.

There is no preprocessing, model simplifications, filtering, or postprocessing with LevelOpt and Intact.Simulation for Rhino Grasshopper!

Features
  • Optimization for Compliance: Maximize stiffness for a specified weight target.
  • Supports Both Isotropic and Orthotropic Materials.
  • Component-Level Flexibility: Optimize individual components or maintain interface connectivity in assemblies.
  • Functional Region Preservation: Ensure critical zones remain intact during optimization.
  • Custom Optimization:
    • Interjecting design changes
    • Incorporating starting designs and fine-tuning settings at any stage
    • Freedom to adaptively adjust feature sizes, wall thicknesses, and preserved functional regions as optimization progresses

NextFEM-Link for Grasshopper now available—a new (free) tool for structural analysis

NextFEM Designer is a free tool for structural analysis for Windows that supports different solvers, such as OOFEM, OpenSees, and CalculiX, and can handle models from more than 20 formats.

Now, you can use it with Rhino 8 and Grasshopper with the brand-new NextFEM-Link for Grasshopper, which brings some components to export the Rhino model to NextFEM Designer and a .NXF (NextFEM format) file. In addition, some query tools are available to use quantities in the model, such as nodal coordinates and element connectivity.

You can use Rhino 8 to model complex geometries and NextFEM-Link to translate them automatically into a NextFEM model, which can be seamlessly analyzed in the solver you prefer or even exported to other proprietary formats.

In its first release, NextFEM-Link translates curves and meshed entities to linear and planar finite elements. Instructions on its use are available.

Finally, NextFEM always listens to the needs of its users; feel free to request new functionalities using this form.

Falko, a finite element analysis tool for Rhino, now available

Falko is a finite element analysis plugin for Rhino by ixRay.

You can use both the Rhino UI or Grasshopper components to create FEA models.  FEA attributes and loads are assigned to layers, tessellation, and intersection of NURBS curves, surfaces, and meshes are done by the pre-processor.

Features include linear, non-linear, buckling, earthquake with spectrum response.

Falko has been developed with Grasshopper and parametric modeling in mind, but Grasshopper knowledge is not needed.
