Ship Hull Design Training with T-Splines for Rhino

Ship Hull Design Training with T-Splines for Rhino
by RhinoCentre NL
Vijfhuizen (near Amsterdam) - The Netherlands
Dec 8-9

T-Splines modeling technology makes it possible to design ship hulls, yachts and free form superstructures in Rhino like never before. In the marine industry there's no comparable modeling tool as powerful as the T-Splines/Orca3D/Rhino combination.

Both high quality as fast results make it possible to model fair ship hulls in little time. The tight integration with Orca3D offers even more functionality for analysis and modeling power.
T-Splines can be applied in preliminary design as well as preparing ship hulls for production.

More information and a demo video is published in Rhino Report blog.

In this training you will learn:
• Basic understanding of T-Splines surfaces
• Working with the T-Splines user interface
• How to use an existing NURBS surface as input for T-Splines
• Several techniques to start modeling a surface from scratch
• Techniques to edit the shape
• Analyzing the quality of the shape
• Adding detail
• Converting back to NURBS
• Integration with Orca3D

Open Lecture HomoFaber

Open Lecture HomoFaber
Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany
2 Dec 2010

This is an open lecture by Dimitry Demin about parametric design with Rhino and Grasshopper:

"The title of Homo Faber lecture series opened a new understanding of old philosophical concepts in new virtuosity of architectural algorithms.
By having conjunction of information and causality of the relativity, by having hubris and noumenon elegance of the classical philosophy and by having the sum of potential in non linear coding – now is time for application in the architectural practice!

To close the gap between information, causality and the collective intelligence, Homo Faber principle offers the aesthetic phenomena of intelligent ways where experimental design builds bridges to the contemporary global problems of politics, economics and ecology."

Intro to Grasshopper webinar, December 8

Join us for our Intro to Grasshopper webinar on Wednesday, December 8th at 10:00 am (Pacific). Grasshopper developer David Rutten will show you how to get started using Grasshopper and share some existing projects, too.

Grasshopper is a graphical algorithm editor that creates designs from form generators and parameters, but requires no programming experience.

Concrete 3D printed sculpture by Rinus Roelofs

Rinus Roelofs created recently a sculpture for the Arte Sella park (Italy).
The sculpture is designed in Rhino and printed in concrete, using the latest technology from D-Shape, a huge concrete 3D printer.

"I came in contact with Enrico Dini (the inventor of the machine) at the University of Eindhoven (WAAS conference 2009 - I was there to give a Grasshopper workshop). After his presentation it was immediately clear to me that I had to go to Pisa, where the printer is located, for the realisation in stone of some of my Rhino designs. This year a complete new printer is build with many improvements based on the experiences with their first printer. The new printer came in use only 4 months ago. And after some experiments, failures and adjustments of my Rhino-model, the sculpture came out very well. It was good to work with the people of Dinitech. And I will be happy to start a next project with them."

Digital Crafting Symposium - Copenhagen

DigitalCrafting Symposium 1 - Computation and Craft
Friday 10.12.2010
Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture
Copenhagen - Denmark

Recent years have seen the establishment of a common digital platform within architecture, engineering and construction. The introduction of computational logics has taken place within each discipline and we are now observing an integration of processes between them. This leads ultimately to a new nearness of design and material.

The first Digital Crafting Symposium asks how the progressive integration of design, analysis and making challenges the knowledge spaces of design, engineering and craft. It seeks to investigate areas of collaboration and super-imposition and to discuss the potentials for the discipline.

New book "Digital processes"

Digitale Prozesse: Planung Gestaltung Fertigung

This new book focuses on digital planning and production technologies and is concluded by a selection of seven projects demonstrating the potential of these techniques, including some Rhino and Grasshopper examples.

So far it is only available in German. An English version is planned for 2011.

Grasshopper 0.8.0002 available

The second version of the Grasshopper 0.8 series is available for download. There are more than 30 enhancements in the 0.80002.

Also, check out the growing list of Grasshopper plugs-ins. Here are a few examples.
  • Firefly - bridges Grasshopper, the Arduino micro-controller, the internet and beyond. Allowing near real-time data flow between the digital and physical worlds, and will read/write data to/from internet feeds, remote sensors and more.

Rhino OS X update

There is a new build available, Wenatchee 2010-11-18, which fixes a potential crash when exiting Rhino that was introduced in the Wenatchee 2010-11-10 WIP release. That WIP included the following changes:

Updates:
  • The Python module has been updated to include the latest changes made in the Windows RhinoPython module. If you are using Python, be sure to also download and install the updated IronPython module. See the IronPython installation instructions for more information.
  • The current release of Paneling Tools is included in this WIP release.
Changes and fixes:
  • In preparation for the upcoming V5 version of Rhino, this version of Rhino now displays "RhinoV4" in the menu bar. The V5 version of Rhino will display "RhinoV5" so it is easy to tell which version you are running.
  • Commands that have default values now display that default value in the Value field in the command options dialog.
  • When exporting to DWG or DXF, you can now add or edit new export schemes. An AutoCAD export scheme defines how different Rhino objects are translated into AutoCAD objects.
  • Right-clicking the viewport label always displays the viewport context menu, even when the right click context menu for the viewport is disabled.
This release of Mac Rhino requires 10.5 (Leopard) or 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to run.

Everyone is invited to download and use the OS X version of Rhino while it is in development.

Most of the core functionality has been ported from Windows and is very stable. There is still much to do to port the rest of the functionality and refine the interface.

We don't expect the first commercial release to be ready until next year. Don't worry if the build you are using is about to expire. New versions will be available every few weeks. There will be a newer one available before the expiration date.

3D GeoInfo Conference 2010 in Berlin

The 5th International 3D GeoInfo Conference 2010 (Berlin, November 3-4) brings together international state-of-the-art research and facilitates dialogue on emerging topics in the field of 3D geo-information. In recent years, research has focused on improving 3D data acquisition technology through:
  • Remote sensing
  • Photogrammetry
  • Laser altimetry techniques (LiDAR)
  • Visualization technology (3D CAD and Virtual Reality (VR) system) for 3D urban environments

The resulting 3D models can be maintained in several types of 3D models:
  • TEN (Tetrahedral Network)
  • Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) models
  • Regular Polytopes
  • TIN Boundary representation and 3D volume quad edge structure
  • Layered/topology models
  • Voxel-based models
  • 3D models used in urban planning/polyhedrons
  • N-dimensional models including time

Still, researchers face many challenges today regarding the development of suitable data models representing topological relationships among 3D spatial objects in built environments.

Come visit the RhinoTerrain SARL booth to learn more about the latest release of RhinoTerrain.
