"Essential Mathematics" - Second Edition

The second edition of the "Essential Mathematics for Computational Design" is now available with free download.

Essential Mathematics uses Grasshopper to introduce design professionals to foundation mathematical concepts that are necessary for effective development of computational methods for 3D modeling and computer graphics.

This second edition includes a few new sections, but most importantly, it carefully reviews the material to ensure clarity and consistency of all concepts. This edition also includes all 31 Grasshopper samples in a separate file.

ArquiBio 2010 - Coimbra, Portugal

ArquiBio 2010 - Coimbra - June 14-18

The third edition of ArquiBio, an event that took off in recent years an international dimension, is jointly organized by the Zoological Museum, University of Coimbra, Center for the Study of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra (CEARQ) and collaborators linked to several European and American universities. This year’s responsibility and coordination is from Dr. Teresa Baptista (Advisor of the Zoological Museum), Prof. Dr. José Fernando Gonçalves (CEARQ Coordinator) and Prof. Dr. Mauro Costa Couceiro (Bionic researcher associated with several European universities).

ArquiBio 2010 is a series of international lectures and workshops on topics connecting architecture and design with the “bio-logics”. It is intended that the lecturers and visiting scholars allow a consistent connection between current biological and architectural knowledge bringing light of recent technological advances.

The premise is that the fusion between biological and technological world is now a reality that cannot be ignored. Computers and robotics prove to be capable of releasing the architects and designers of a catalog architecture, based on still images, teaching us new fields of interaction in which complex processes similar to those that occur in nature, take center stage and allow a more consistent connection with the living environment.

Rhino, Grasshopper and RhinoCAM will be the software used during the workshops.

RhinoBIM Structure available

RhinoBIM is a series of BIM plugins for Rhino 5 from Virtual Build Technologies LLC. The first module, Structure, is now available. This work-in-progress version is nearly feature complete and is expected to be released later this year. Everyone is invited to download it now.

Features include:

  • Robust tools for adding and editing structural steel beams
  • Extensive library of steel shapes including the international standards
  • User definable steel shapes
  • Assign materials, attributes, and process treatments to each element
  • Extract data for downstream application including structural analysis, detailing, cost estimating, scheduling, staging, and fabrication
  • Very fast clash and clearance analysis
  • Very large model support using new Rhino 5 technology
See RhinoBIM at AIA Expo2010, June 10-12, Miami, Booth 2485.

The following Grasshopper workshops have been recently announced:

Follow the workshop links for more information and to register...

GiD Conference Barcelona

McNeel Europe has been invited to make a Rhino/Grasshopper presentation at the 5th GiD Conference that will take place on the 26-27 May in Barcelona (Spain).

The objective of this fifth edition of the GiD Conference is to bring together users and developers of the GiD pre/post processing system in order to exchange ideas and experience on the generation of data for computer simulation and the graphic visualisation of numerical results.

GiD has been designed as a universal, adaptive and user-friendly graphical user interface for geometrical modeling, data input and visualisation of results for all types of numerical simulation programs. Typical problems that can be successfully tackled with GiD include most situations in solid and structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, heat transfer, geomechanics, etc. using finite element, finite volume, boundary element, finite difference or point based (meshless) numerical procedures. GiD reads native Rhino format.

Grasshopper workshops - Romania

Digital design and fabrication is spreading quickly among architects worldwide. Romania's Architecture faculties are doing a great promotion of these new technologies and currently have organized the following events:

The Students Association of Ion Mincu Architecture and Urbanism University Bucharest and HYPERBODY research group of TU Delft:

Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism Cluj (Romania):

VSR Realtime Renderer 2.0

VSR Realtime Renderer 2.0 is the fully embedded realtime rendering solution for Rhino. Switch from the modeling mode to a photorealistic environment at any time. VSR Realtime Renderer 2.0 goes much beyond the functionality of the previous version 1.0.

It can be combined with other Rhino plug-ins such as Bongo or with the new VSR modeling and analysis plug-ins currently under development.

With the support provided by the VSR Realtime Renderer the work on the CAD model has become a lot easier. In addition, the time-consuming creation of static images via batch renderer and conversion of the data for use in other visualization tools are things of the past, as a high-resolution hardcopy can be generated at any time simply by snap shooting the desired image.

New features in version 2.0:

  • Realtime bump mapping
  • Glow
  • HDRI bloom effects
  • Library of more than 100 predefined materials (user extendable)
  • Library of predefined environments (user extendable)
  • New snapshot command for easier high-resolution hard copies
