Utzon(x) Summer School: Unfolding Utzon

Utzon(x)SummerSchoolCover
Utzon (x) Architecture Summer School Utzon Center – Aalborg, Denmark
August 19-30, 2013

The aim of the summer school is to explore new approaches to design in the line of Utzon's work, by extending his design principles with the use of computational techniques in a parametric design environment. The summer school is a hands-on learning environment, where theoretical knowledge is coupled with physical and digital design assignments related to the theme.

We will be working in the Utzon Center throughout the summer school. From the studies and prototypes developed by participants a 1:1 folded reciprocal canopy will be created and constructed to cover a large part of the Utzon Center courtyard.

Please send 2x A4 pages, including letter of interest (5-10 lines), 1-2 reference projects of previous work and contact details to Lasse Andersson (land@create.aau.dk) before May 1st.

Rhino, Grasshopper and Kangaroo for a Magic Garden

The Magic Garden installation by Mamou-Mani is part of the Regent Sreet Windows Project 2013 organized by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). It has been designed with Rhino, Grasshopper, and Kangaroo to animate and link all the store windows with one beautiful fluid form. Using digital and physical techniques, the architect has shaped light-diffusing polyamide mesh fabric to maximize its structural qualities and interact with the mannequins. The result reflects the precision of both tailoring and architecture and the color and lightness of the Karen Millen SS13 collection.

Structural Geometry workshop – Salerno, Italy

Structural Geometry
Digital | Physical | Resilient
June 26-30, 2013 Salerno, Italy

This workshop aims to promote a better integrated architectural/engineering design paradigm, where spatial and formal exploration is informed since its early stage of development by the analysis of building performances, both structural and environmental.

The workshop, held within the context of the international events NEWITALIANBLOOD ARCTEC, is open to architects, engineers, designers, both professionals and students.

The workshop focuses on shape and geometric optimization of structures, such as shells and grid-shells which will be designed incorporating fabrication constraints. Digital models will be validated through prototypes built using 3D printed components, plastic tubes and cable ties and combination of them. Prototypes of selected designs developed over the workshop will be included in the main public exhibition of the international events NEWITALIANBLOOD ARCTEC, which will be held in Salerno, Pontecagnano, Ravello and Cava dei Tirreni in May/June 2013.

Workshop runners : Gennaro Senatore | Daniel Piker

The base CAD software is Rhino 5 and Grasshopper.

The workshop will be held in Italian and English.

Organic inspiration

Using the concept of a whale's backbone Canadian architect Andrew McConnell has created the Vertebrae Staircase, modeled entirely in Rhino and T-Splines.

Helping kids with motor deficits - Utalca, Chile

The objective is to create a space for conducting multimodal training activities especially touch, proprioceptive and vestibular. The configuration of the surface should allow kids to perform activities graded from simple movements to complex sequences of movements requiring the action of the whole body; satisfying a need and providing a space for recreation, play, and development of the locomotor system and sensory integration.

Based on sections, which generate peaks and depressions, Francisco Javier Lara Bastidas, an architectural student from Universidad de Talca in Chile, constructed a three-dimensional field called "Manto Topográfico" (Topographic Mantle). He was able to develop his project thanks to Rhino and Grasshopper which where used to model, measure, classify, optimize and organize the materials, so he could deliver his digital parametric designed structure.

How to make a sci-fi film for $40,000

Wired Design interviewed Otto Stockmeier the day after he and Derek Van Gorder released their science fiction short film, C (299,792 km/s). Stockmeier discusses how their movie was made with limited resources, raising money on Kickstarter and using basic film making tools available to most everyone.

Rhino was used for the modeling. When modeler Charles Adams came on board to build the spaceship, he started with the 3D Sketchup model used for the Kickstarter campaign. He rebuild it in Rhino, refined it and added more details. More important to the filmmakers was that with the Rhino model Charles was able to break the model down into pieces for a base kit of laser cut parts, generating accurate shapes for laser printing.

Neon 1.0 now available

Neon in the viewport

Neon 1.0 is now available as a free download for all registered Rhino 5 users.

Neon is a realtime, fully ray-traced viewport plugin for Rhino 5.  Developed in collaboration with Caustic Professional, Neon adds a new working viewport mode called Raytraced with Neon. There's almost no other UI. It just works.

Neon helps a designer to quickly evaluate and establish the form, color, texture, lighting, and material requirements of a scene, very early on, without interruption.  Realtime high dynamic range reflections, transparency, high-quality sky lighting, true procedural texturesall rendered in realtime, right into the Rhino viewport, as you work.

Neon also supports the Caustic Series2  ray tracing accelerator boards to deliver up to 4x the performance.

And best of all, Neon is free!

If you haven’t already done so, sign up and join the Neon group, download Neon, and start using it in Rhino 5 today!

Rhino and Grasshopper training in Bucharest

Print

The Rhinoceros and Grasshopper courses aim to provide young architects and designers with the opportunity to complement their skills and knowledge in digital three-dimensional modeling.
This series of courses is designed to provide tailored learning modules for each level. The courses are divided into four modules of 24 hours each. The beginner modules represent an introduction for the Rhino modeling environment and Grasshopper parametric design. The advanced ones are aiming to extend the modeling techniques and visual programming skills already acquired. Courses will be structured to provide both theoretical foundations behind a precise and efficient modeling, and practical exercises.
By covering the full range of courses, architects and designers without prior knowledge about Rhino modeling environment, will acquire three-dimensional modeling and parametric design skills with application in the professional practice.
The course series consists of two parts, one dedicated to beginners and one for the advanced. At the end of each part, there will be a workshop organized for those who would have graduated from each part’s Grasshopper module. These workshops will apply knowledge gained from courses and will be geared towards hands-on experience in 3D modeling and digital fabrication of designed objects. The results of the workshops will be exhibited in Bucharest Architecture Annual.

Footbridge designed in Grasshopper

Cyprus Competition:
2011 - 1st Award
Architect: Elina Pattichi
Client: The Municipality of Pafos City
IMAGE1s
This proposal for a footbridge on the Tasos Papadopoulos Avenue won the first prize in the competition in Pafos, Cyprus.

The design of the footbridge ensures safe pedestrian and cyclist circulation between the adjacent schools and the residential areas. It also creates a public landmark for this problematic boundary between the adjacent neighborhoods because of the wide avenue.

The unique characteristic of this proposal is that the construction method aims to integrate the bridge’s circulation with the support system of the footbridge. The stairs and the ramps become an integral part of the footbridge support system and are sculpted together with the main horizontal deck (95 meters long and 3-6 meters wide). So the footbridge behaves as a curved cantilever. This sculpting method is highlighted by the transformation of the landscape as the bridge foundation pushes the ground to create the steps and sitting areas on the ground. The circulation on the ground determines the landscape design with sitting areas.

In the middle of the bridge, the corridor becomes wider while the hole pattern becomes denser. This gradient of the pattern is a result of Grasshopper which aims to highlight in a macro-scale the circulation intersection in the middle of the bridge and in a micro-scale the position of the holes on the metallic panels which decrease the panel’s heat capacity, weight and wind loads and create positions for the lighting on the ground.

The bridge was modelled in Grasshopper.
