Computational design and BIM workflows are transforming the way structural engineers design, analyze, and document projects. Stereotomic Stone Architecture — International Workshop

An intensive workshop exploring the design and construction of stereotomic stone structures, combining geometric reasoning, digital modeling, and hands-on fabrication. 

The digital component of the workshop will be developed in Rhino/Grasshopper, with a particular focus on Voussoir, a recently developed plugin at FAUP for the parametric modeling of stereotomic vaults. The program includes a visit to a marble quarry in Alentejo and the construction of a stereotomic stone arch. 

The workshop opens with a symposium featuring Giuseppe Fallacara, Christophe Aubertin, and Clemente Pinto.

This workshop introduces a computational design framework that integrates environmental conditions, ecological processes, and human behavior within Rhino and Grasshopper. Participants will work across three simulation systems to understand how spatial decisions influence microclimate, vegetation dynamics, and pedestrian experience over time in an urban context.

The workshop is led by the development team of Rhino.Ecologic -Verena Vogler, Eleftherios Kourkopoulos, and Jens Joschinski (McNeel Europe), together with invited contributors including Mariusz Hermansdorfer, former Head of Computational Design at Henning Larsen, developer of jiftoand the development team behind Kova PedSimPuja Bhagat, and Jonathan Wong from the Architectural Association London/ Populous. The instructors bring expertise spanning computational design, environmental simulation, ecological modeling, and socially driven agent-based systems.

Learn how to construct integrated simulation workflows that connect geometry, environmental analysis, ecological modeling, and human behavior. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to evaluate design scenarios across climate, biodiversity, and pedestrian dynamics, and use simulation outputs to inform design decisions. 

Day 1: Designing with Microclimate (jifto-a real-time sustainability analysis plugin for Rhino)

  • Thermal comfort as a design driver in architecture and urban design
  • Solar exposure, shadow behavior, and seasonal variation
  • Wind, radiation, and environmental forces shaping outdoor space
  • Real-time microclimate analysis within Rhino

Ping-Hsiang Chen, former computational designer at Zaha Hadid Architects, will lead a three-day online Kangaroo Physics workshop hosted by McNeel Europe.

This course introduces Kangaroo Physics, the live physics engine in Grasshopper, covering interactive simulation, form-finding, optimization, and constraint solving. Participants will learn to simulate material behavior, analyze geometry, and create animations while exploring core concepts such as constraints, particle systems, and material properties.

The workshop will also cover the application of Kangaroo to various geometry types, including NURBS, Mesh, and SubD.

This workshop is built around what Revit users struggle with the most: endless parameter edits, time-consuming sheets/views, families at scale, naming chaos, slow models, and painful exports. 

Computational engineer Kris Wojslaw and Rhino.Inside.Revit expert Junghwo Park will show six ready-to-use automations to set up Rhino.Inside correctly, keep models fast, and deliver clean, consistent documentation. No Revit API is needed, only Grasshopper.

You’ll learn to:
  • Set up Rhino.Inside + Grasshopper (install, UI, units/origins preflight).
  • Load/place families at scale; create simple GH-driven components (or DirectShapes for speed).
  • Bulk-edit parameters with validation (Excel round-trip, QA rules).
  • Auto-create views and sheets with rule-based filters and consistent layouts.

Simply Rhino UK have announced their latest free Rhino video tutorialIn the video, their senior Rhino trainer, Phil Cook, looks at a SubD modelling workflow to create a soft yet structured packaging pouch. Phil starts with some 2D guide curves and then demonstrates how to create the pack in simple steps. We are shown how to create a dimensionally correct ‘rigid’ version for production and then how to create a more irregular version for visualization.
