FTWDAY 2025: A one-day event dedicated to innovation in the footwear industry

On November 28, 2025, the second edition of FTWDAY – Footwear Innovation Day will take place at Infinite Area, Montebelluna (Italy), in the heart of the global footwear district.

Following the success of the first edition, which brought together over 250 participants from Europe, Asia, and the Americas, FTWDAY has quickly established itself as one of the most forward-thinking forums for footwear design, engineering, and production.

Organized by Design&Develop, Footwear Innovation Day brings together industry leaders, designers, engineers, and innovators to exchange ideas, explore new technologies, and discuss the future of footwear.

The 2025 edition will be structured around four key topics shaping the industry today:
  • Innovation in fabrication: technologies accelerating time to market today and transforming the factories of tomorrow.
  • Product end-of-life: design thinking for sustainability and circularity, reimagining what happens to footwear after use.
  • Digital transformation: making sense of the growing ecosystem of digital tools, with real use cases that prove their impact.
  • Design for purpose: insights from experts designing footwear for the most demanding and complex use cases.

With cutting-edge talks, hands-on showcases, actionable takeaways, and networking opportunities, FTWDAY 2025 is more than a conference—it’s a platform for meaningful discussions and practical insights that participants can apply directly to their work.

Seats are limited, and the event is live only (no online version).

Rhino User Webinar: The Vivobarefoot BIOME Project

The Vivobarefoot BIOME project
12 March 2025 at 4:00 PM (CET)

The Vivobarefoot BIOME project tackles the limitations of traditional shoe manufacturing by democratizing algorithmic inputs for both customers and designers. Using computational systems, the team developed a foot-centric workflow that converts Signed Distance Fields (SDF) into machine code for robotics and automated slicing. This streamlines production into scalable, efficient pipelines.

Partnerships with Volumental and ShapeDiver integrate advanced scanning and computational tools with Rhino and Grasshopper, creating sustainable, bespoke footwear solutions that balance design, material science, and hardware constraints.

Speaker: Peter Davis is a self-confessed computational nerd who has worked with artists, companies, and research institutes to bring innovative visions to life, from public space installations to custom products driven by client data.

After finishing his career as a professional breakdancer and selling his first company specializing in urban entertainment, Peter transitioned to a new creative industry. This led to co-founding a second company focused on computational design, 3D printing, AR/VR, and visualizations. ECCO eventually acquired the company to launch an innovation lab to revolutionize leather and shoe production. This career path has pushed Peter to explore 3D design, robotics, Industry 4.0 manufacturing, and even jet packs.

Now, Peter is automating bespoke products through AI-driven engineering. Products, structures, and entire machines are designed using computer algorithms and mass-produced in digital factories with industrial 3D printing. These objects are more advanced, efficient, and sustainable than traditional ones.

Spherene is an API and a plugin for Grasshopper that helps to minimize material and maximize strength. It allows designers to create optimal material properties for various 3D printing methods, minimizing the need for support and speeding up your CAD workflow.

In this free workshop, you will learn what Spherene can do and how to apply it to footwear through two use cases taught by expert teachers: René Medel (Senior Digital Creation Engineer at Framas) and Jesus Marini Parissi (Computational Design Engineer at Moon Rabbit Adaptive Lab).

This workshop is streamed live online, but if you are in Barcelona for Footwearise, you can join in person. The first part of the workshop takes place at our Footwearology lab, and the second part is at the European HQ of McNeel, the company behind Rhino and Grasshopper.

The spherene workshop is meant for design professionals with at least a basic to intermediate knowledge of Grasshopper.

Footwearise (2-3 December 2024) - Barcelona

Footwearise
Barcelona
2-3 December 2024

Footwearise, hosted by international innovation platform Footwearology, unites all companies striving towards a common goal: to produce footwear close to market, on demand, with options for customization, from renewable and regenerative materials, including feasible and profitable retail and end-of-life systems. The event includes an exhibition, conference, and networking opportunities, as well as a curriculum of workshops and demos in the days after.

The focus is not just on 3D printing but also knittingmolding, and any other technology or software that aims to improve how we designmanufactureuse, and reuse shoes.

The first edition in September 2023 was completely sold out. A spin-off event in Portland (USA) in January 2024 was so successful that Footwearology is now expanding its beautiful location.

Footwearise is not a traditional tradeshow. Instead, it focuses on sharing knowledge and making effective connections between exhibitors, speakers, and visitors that speed up progress for the whole industry. The event's first edition last September year led to many fruitful collaborations that will be shown this time!
