Call for Papers: CAGD Special Issue on Applications of NURBS in Architectural Geometry

 


The journal Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) has announced a special issue on Applications of NURBS in Architectural Geometry, marking the 50th anniversary of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS). This special issue celebrates the enduring impact of NURBS on architectural geometry and invites contributions that explore both their achievements and limitations. 

The editors welcome submissions that highlight successful applications, discuss current challenges, and explore emerging approaches that may strengthen spline-based design and analysis in the future.

For five decades, NURBS have played a central role in geometric modeling, enabling designers, engineers, and architects to create and fabricate increasingly complex forms with precision and flexibility. From early freeform design exploration to today's integrated design-to-fabrication workflows, NURBS continue to underpin many digital tools used across the architecture, engineering, and construction industries.

Teaching & Research Position at Experimental and Digital Design and Construction at the University of Kassel



There is a new position available at EDEK–Experimental and Digital Design and Construction at the University of Kassel. They are seeking a teaching and research assistant (EG 13 / 50–75%) with experience in digital and circular design for teaching in Bachelor's and Master's studios. Furthermore, participation in research projects and the completion of a doctorate are expected. Experience in digital manufacturing methods, university teaching experience, and a high degree of teamwork skills are advantageous.

New research position at Woodwind+




A new research position Woodwind+ research project has been funded by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), University of Kassel.

The University of Kassel is looking for a Research Associate (EG13/100%) with experience in computational design and robotic manufacturing for a project focusing on robotic winding methods with wood veneers. The project aims to develop an ultra-lightweight, material-efficient building system for extending existing structures. The project is a collaborative project with the chair of structural design | Prof. Julian Lienhard. The application deadline is August 11.

Open position Artist/Designer in Residence at EPFL’s Geometric Computing Laboratory (GCM)



Position: Artist/Designer in Residence
Host Lab: Geometric Computing Laboratory, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland
Timeframe: 3 months, from September to December
Application deadline is June 15, 2025.

This residency invites artists, designers, and makers to engage in an intense collaboration with scientists at EPFL’s Geometric Computing Laboratory (GCM) directed by Mark Pauly. We welcome project proposals that leverage our scientific research to create a sculptural artwork, installation, or functional application prototype. The resident will have access to GCM’s latest research technology and computational design tools, as well as a fully equipped fab lab. The residency is fully funded and is expected to last three months during the fall of 2025.

The Integrative Technologies and Architectural Design Research (ITECH) MSc Program is known for its interdisciplinary, research-oriented, experiment-based education shaped around contemporary aspects of the built environment and practice.

The international program spans two years, featuring a group design research project in the first year and a Master's thesis project in the second year. Additional seminar modules provide a strong foundation and exploration of individual interests while encouraging teamwork and collaboration.
 
In all its phases, ITECH integrates intensive, critical, and analytical approaches with cutting-edge computational techniques, structural and climate engineering, and advanced fabrication and construction technologies in the architectural design process.

The program invites applications from a broad spectrum of fields, including architecture or architectural science, civil/structural engineering, urban planning, biology or biomimetics, material science, computer science, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, and related engineering and natural science fields.

The Congress of the Spanish Chapter of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB) was created on July 6, 2011, as the Spanish representation of the European Society of Biomechanics. Its aim is to bring together professionals and researchers in Biomechanics, promote collaboration between universities, clinics, and the business sector, and promote the dissemination of scientific research in Biomechanics in Spain.

For the first time, the congress is coming to Navarra and will be held October 28-29 in Pamplona.

The objectives of the congress are to:
  • Present the lines of work of the different Spanish groups in Biomechanics.
  • Promote the Spanish Chapter and the European Society of Biomechanics within other Spanish groups whose research is in the context of Biomechanics (design, simulation, experiments in Biomechanics).
  • Encourage collaboration between the different groups working in Biomechanics in Spain.
  • Serve as a meeting point for clinicians, doctors, and professionals interested in Biomechanics.
  • Present the advances and new initiatives from the Executive Committee and to gather the opinions of the Chapter members to establish the roadmap for the following year.
Rhino and Grasshopper users are invited to share their research projects and to participate in the congress.

3D printed surgical guides combined with monitored guidewires for placement of cervicothoracic pedicle screws

 



Rhino and its medical plugin Rhino3DMedical have been used on a technical note in a study on the accuracy and safety of 3D-printed surgical guides for the placement of cervicothoracic pedicle screws. The study was led by the Neurosurgery Department of Centro Hospitalar Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho and Pagaimo Medical from Figueira da Foz, Portugal.
