OneLineFonts.com is a source for single line fonts for use with CNC machining and engraving. OneLineFonts.com developed several font formats to ensure that you will have a font that works in Rhino. In particular, they have a format (with OC in the name) that works in conjunction with the Rhinoceros single stroke font button. This will provide you with clean bezier curved letter shapes that your tool only traces once. openNURBS 5 Released

openNURBS 5 is an upgrade to the widely used openNURBS C++ and .NET toolkits. The openNURBS Initiative provides over 9,000 CAD, CAM, CAE, and computer graphics software developers the tools to accurately transfer 3D geometry between applications.

The openNURBS 5 toolkits now support all of the new features in Rhino 5 (and below) native 3DM file format including history, extrusions, annotation, meshes, and images.

The toolkit includes:

• C++ and .NET source code libraries to read and write Rhino 5, 4, 3, and 2 3DM files and read Rhino 1 files. 
• The current Microsoft, Apple and Gnu compilers for Windows, Windows x64, Mac, and Linux are supported. 
• NURBS evaluation routines. 
• Documentation. 
• Quality assurance and revision control. 
• Free technical support.

The openNURBS toolkits are free. There are no restrictions. Neither copyright nor copyleft restrictions apply. No contribution of effort or technology is required from the members, although it is encouraged.

David Rutten honored with Innovation award

David Rutten, the developer of Grasshopper, has won an Innovative Research Award from Acadia.

The award recognizes innovative research in the field of digital design in architecture. Acadia elaborated on David's impact, "Grasshopper has been pivotal to the transformation of parametric design practices over the past five-plus years."

"He has made parametric design and system optimization easily accessible, and usable, to thousands of academics and practitioners. Mr. Rutten is known among his peers for being remarkably generous with his time. He provides continuous assistance to Grasshopper users through his tireless involvement on the Grasshopper blog and has remained actively supportive of the Acadia community for many years."

David couldn't be at the Acadia conference last week to accept his award, but recorded this self-revealing video for the conference.

From Pyramids to Spacecraft, an exhibition by AV

Architecture and Vision’s traveling exhibition From Pyramids to Spacecraft will be on view from the 15th to 30th October, 2012 at the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo, Egypt. The exhibition is displaying selected projects by the design studio Architecture and Vision, founded by Italian architect Arturo Vittori and Swiss architect Andreas Vogler with offices in Munich, Germany and Bomarzo, Italy. Vittori and Vogler have been working together since 2003 and received a number of important international recognitions. Their works are exhibited, among other places, in the MOMA in New York and at the Architecture Biennale in Venice.

They use Rhino as one of their primary modeling tools to develop projects that provide elegant, ecological and economical solutions for an evolving planet. Their projects range from urban scale to architecture, product design as well as aerospace, medical design and art.

ARTC Roma will host a 6-day workshop as a full immersion into Rhino, V-Ray, and Photoshop, to instruct every aspect from advanced modeling to high-end rendering and final post-production:

• Rhino training, 2 days (Nov 5-6): a special program somewhere between the level 1 and level 2 standard McNeel courses, to model a scene that will be used during the rendering and post production session
• V-Ray training, 2 days (Nov 7-8): rendering engine settings, customized materials, lights

RhinoBIM is a suite of several plugins to enhance Rhino 5 for the architectural, engineering, and construction industries. Developed by Virtual Build Technologies LLC, the first module now available is called RhinoBIM Structure, for 3D structure modeling, Clash & Clear Analysis, and Structural Analysis.

Laminate Tools for Rhino

Anaglyph Ltd. recently announced Laminate Tools for Rhino. This new plugin allows Rhino users to create draped plies and a basic layup from within Rhino, accessing Laminate Tools remotely.

Laminate Tools is a stand-alone Windows application that addresses the entire Geometry import-Design-Analysis-Check-Manufacture process of composites structural design. It can be viewed as a virtual manufacturing tool capable of creating a composite part before any commitment to hardware is made. It is a tool that links the various disciplines, communicates original data between all involved in the process, and saves valuable team time. Laminate Tools also interfaces with FEA applications including a recently added plug-in for Femap.

The software has the potential to reduce laminate iteration turnaround times and provide a more optimized design within tight deadlines and allows for more detailed results interrogation with ease.

Anaglyph has been developing composite design and analysis software tools for over 20 years and their products are used by large and small organizations in a wide range of industrial sectors including automotive, aerospace, sports, and wind energy. A number of universities have also adopted them for teaching and research.

As a natural extension to Laminate Tools, Anaglyph has also developed PlyMatch, a technology used in the hand-layup manufacture of composite components, for the accurate positioning of plies. The seamless data flow between Design and shop floor guarantees a fast and accurate process.

ROB|ARCH 2012 News

We are pleased to announce the final ROB|ARCH 2012 workshop: Led by Martin Bechthold and Nathan King, Harvard GSD will host a robot workshop at TU Graz on Robotic Casting. Like all other workshops, the Harvard GSD workshop will take place from December 14th to 16th. Participants will also be able to register for the free ABB-sponsored RobotStudio pre-workshop on the 13th.

The workshop explores novel approaches to serially customized casting processes enabled through the strategic deployment of three 6-axis robotic manipulators. Combining bottom-up and top-down design approaches, the workshop includes the design and fabrication of robotic molds geared toward the production of customizable structural components. The workshop production process takes full advantage of the robot's ability to precisely choreograph the mold position in space and time. The production will generate a controlled yet infinitely variable family of structural modules that combine into a larger physical prototype.

Furthermore, ETH Zurich & ROB Technology have informed us that their workshop will use the mobile ROB unit—a KUKA robotic arm mounted on a shipping container—that was used for projects such as the Pike Loop. See the video of ROB in action below:
