Toy of the Year finalist

The Toy Industry Association has included Nancy B's Science Club's Black Light Illuminator as a 2015 Toy of the Year finalist. The final winners will be announced in New York on February 12th.

Dave Schultze, SchultzeWORKS design studio in Santa Monica, CA, designed the science sleuthing activity kit, using Rhino for all the design work.

The Black Light Illuminator focuses on STEM-learning (Science, Technology, and Math Education) and encourages scientific exploration. Kids can:
  • Collect rocks, insects, and flowers that glow under black light.
  • Make gelatin that glows.
  • Learn counterfeit money detection.
  • Encrypt codes and ciphers.
SchultzeWORKS designstudio has clients in consumer electronics, housewares, furniture, and lighting. Owner and founder Dave Schultz teaches industrial design and 3D visualization at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. 3D Printed Jewelry

Han-Yin Hsu of ANNXANNXDESIGN specializes in small lines of jewelry 3D printed in both metal and colorful plastic. The Los Angeles designer starts with a hand drawn sketch, then turns it to a 3D model using Maya. She then converts it to a 3D printable model using Rhino. Han-Yin orders her 3D printed designs in bulk, then attaches chains, ear clips, and other finishing pieces. She also dyes some of the pieces to get unique colors. Software makes it possible for her to make shapes not available from most traditional jewelry making methods.

Han-Yin started her career with a Masters degree in architecture from Southern California Institute of Architecture. She spent several years working for interior designers and design firms, before starting ANNXANNXDESIGN.

COMPUTATION MATTERS: Grasshopper workshop in Bulgaria

Sofia, Bulgaria
Februay 24-28, 2016

COMPUTATION MATTERS is a workshop for integrative computational design. It presents an extensive introduction to digital design, complex geometry, and digital fabrication. The workshop's focus is the translation between digital morphogenesis, inherent material properties, and fabrication execution through the development of parametric geometric models, as well as both digital and physical model analysis. Participants will design systems derived by the explored material behavior, consisting of three-dimensional components aggregated within a network. The development of performative systems provides a wide range of architectural, interior, and product design applications.

Details

The material chosen is polypropylene, due to the large domain of material properties that can be explored. Physical experiments will be carried out to understand the inherent material properties, which will be translated into a digital environment. Components will be developed through polypropylene sheet manipulation techniquesbending, twisting, or folding. Digital simulations and structural analysis will be carried out for components and aggregations, in parallel with physical prototyping.

What You Will Learn

– Introduction to Grasshopper and algorithmic geometry
– Creating complex geometries through parametric modeling
– Structural analysis techniques with Karamba3D
– Interactive physics simulations with Kangaroo
– Digital fabrication techniques with FabTools and Generation
– Understanding of performative design

Grasshopper for Mac

A very early version of Grasshopper is available in the Rhino for Mac WIP for testing and feedback.

Rhino 5 for Mac users have access to the Working-In Progress (WIP) builds. The most recent Rhino WIP contains a hidden command called ExplicitHistory.

To try out Grasshopper in the WIP build, just type "explicithistory".

Please post feedback and report bugs (there are many!) in this category.

Virtual Worlds lecture by Jan Kokol, Graz

FH Joanneum Graz
11.01.2016 - 15.00

A lecture exploring avant-garde Computer Graphics with a high level of diverse body of work. Modeling and animating the Walking City of Ron Herron, creating an interactive application for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, fragmenting Zaha Hadid's complex geometry, working on dynamic Virtual Reality environments, visualizing a robotic painting at the Harvard GSD and explaining personal conceptual works of art.

The use of a diverse set of tools and lots of creativity are being shown. Rhino is most often part of the process, from the early stages, up to exporting geometry to gaming engines for further manipulation.
