This workshop introduces a computational design framework that integrates environmental conditions, ecological processes, and human behavior within Rhino and Grasshopper. Participants will work across three simulation systems to understand how spatial decisions influence microclimate, vegetation dynamics, and pedestrian experience over time in an urban context.

The workshop is led by the development team of Rhino.Ecologic -Verena Vogler, Eleftherios Kourkopoulos, and Jens Joschinski (McNeel Europe), together with invited contributors including Mariusz Hermansdorfer, former Head of Computational Design at Henning Larsen, developer of jiftoand the development team behind Kova PedSimPuja Bhagat, and Jonathan Wong from the Architectural Association London/ Populous. The instructors bring expertise spanning computational design, environmental simulation, ecological modeling, and socially driven agent-based systems.

Learn how to construct integrated simulation workflows that connect geometry, environmental analysis, ecological modeling, and human behavior. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to evaluate design scenarios across climate, biodiversity, and pedestrian dynamics, and use simulation outputs to inform design decisions. 

Day 1: Designing with Microclimate (jifto-a real-time sustainability analysis plugin for Rhino)

  • Thermal comfort as a design driver in architecture and urban design
  • Solar exposure, shadow behavior, and seasonal variation
  • Wind, radiation, and environmental forces shaping outdoor space
  • Real-time microclimate analysis within Rhino
  • Integration of environmental data into early-stage design decisions

Day 2: Ecological Simulation in Design (Rhino.Ecologic-an ecological simulation framework for Rhino and Grasshopper)

  • From geometry to ecological domain: Voxel-based spatial modeling
  • Environmental mapping: Soil, solar, and precipitation as design parameters
  • Simulation of plant communities (growth, competition, succession)
  • Biodiversity and biomass as measurable design outcomes
  • Scenario-based evaluation of long-term ecological performance

Day 3: Social Simulation and Pedestrian Dynamics (Kova PedSim-a socially-driven pedestrian simulation framework for Grasshopper)

  • Foundations of agent-based and socially driven pedestrian modeling
  • Simulation types: Network-based, cellular automata, and physics-based
  • Analysis of density, interaction, congestion, and movement patterns
  • Integration of behavioral data into generative design workflows
  • Evaluation of spatial performance under dynamic and changing conditions

Course requirements: Intermediate Rhino knowledge is required.  No prior experience with environmental, ecological, or human interaction analysis needed. We will start with the fundamentals.

Software requirement: Rhino 8 for Windows. Rhino.Ecologic, Kova PedSim, and jifto will be provided to all participants.

Ladybug Tools and IronBug online workshop, April 15-17 (McNeel Europe)

Join us for a focused, hands-on three-day workshop on energy simulation and thermal comfort modelling using Rhino and Grasshopper, with a special emphasis on robust workflows with Ladybug Tools and advanced HVAC system simulation using IronBug, hosted in person by Dosta Tec and led by energy engineer Mateo Barbero, architect Adrian Krezlik, and energy modeller Julia Karnas.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Build and calibrate multi-zone energy models
  • Know the basics of setting up a detailed HVAC system using IronBug
  • Evaluate operational energy use and carbon intensity
  • Model and interpret the most common thermal comfort metrics
  • Integrate energy and comfort analysis into early-stage design workflows

Day 1: Foundations of Climate & Energy Modelling

The first day establishes the theoretical and computational foundations of
building energy modelling. 
  • Climate modelling in the AEC context
  • Future climate scenarios and their modelling
  • Weather data
  • Introduction to Ladybug Tools interface and workflows
  • Weather data analysis and radiation studies
  • Building a simple energy model in Honeybee
  • Best practices for geometry, zoning, and simulation setup

Day 2: Detailed Energy Simulation & Thermal Comfort (with IronBug)

The second day focuses on advancing from simplified models to technically
rigorous simulations, including HVAC system modelling through IronBug.
  • Develop a detailed multi-zone energy model
  • Define program schedules, internal loads, and occupancy profiles
  • Assign construction assemblies and material properties
  • Analyse energy intensity and end-use breakdown
  • Evaluate operational carbon intensity
  • Introduction to IronBug
  • HVAC system modelling logic
  • System components and configuration
  • Linking HVAC systems to thermal zones

Day 3: Comfort Modelling

The final day introduces thermal comfort modelling, positioned within the
broader framework of energy demand and occupant comfort.
  • PMV/PPD metrics
  • Adaptive comfort models
  • Overheating risk assessment
  • Comfort-based design optimisation strategies
  • Material properties and thermal mass

Course requirements:  The training is tailored for architects, engineers, and designers seeking greater technical control over building performance modelling. Intermediate knowledge of Rhino and Grasshopper is required.

Software requirement: Rhino 8

Join us for a comprehensive, hands-on, three-day workshop designed to introduce participants to key topics in environmental design: energy, daylight, and thermal modeling with Ladybug and Honeybee.

The workshop is hosted by Dosta Tec, an engineering and technology company specializing in sustainable buildings. This face-to-face training offers a unique opportunity for formative learning. It is led by Mateo Barbero, an experienced energy engineer, and Adrian Krezlik, an architect and PhD researcher at the University of Porto's Faculty of Architecture.

After completing the workshop, you'll have valuable knowledge on energy modeling, thermal comfort, daylight, and the environmental impact of buildings with Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug tools, and Honeybee.

Day 1

On the first workshop day, fundamental concepts in architectural environmental modeling will be introduced, exploring the influence of climate change, bioclimatic design, and future climate modeling. Following this introduction, modeling tools, workflows, and best practices are presented. Participants engage in hands-on exercises, crafting their definitions, and will actively apply the concepts learned.

  • Simple energy model

Day 2

Participants kick off by creating a basic energy simulation for a case study. They then work closely with the tutors to augment the model, incorporating details such as program specifics and construction systems and calibrating it accordingly. Following a theoretical overview of thermal comfort, participants apply their knowledge by modeling human thermal comfort.

Day 3

On the final day, participants will explore the fundamentals of daylight modeling. This module emphasizes creating definitions for essential metrics such as Daylight Factor and Daylight Availability. The objective is to compare these metrics and develop the skills to optimize building designs for improved daylight conditions.
  • Daylight Physics, Sun Position, Radiation Rose, Local Daylight Conditions
  • Sunlight hours on the façade. Introduction to Daylight Modelling

Course requirements: Experience using Grasshopper at an intermediate level. Software requirement: Rhino 8

We want to introduce the newest release of Qubu Ultralight, the first of Qubu's Grasshopper plugins.

Qubu Ultralight is high-speed, and easy-to-use software, designed for the Direct Sunlight and indirect Daylight Factor evaluation of buildings and urban zones. It can seamlessly integrate into the regular design processes of sustainable and compliant buildings.

During the webinar, we will discuss how and why to use Ultralight in Grasshopper to achieve accurate and faster daylighting analysis, aligning with Qubu's mission to help architects and real estate developers create better, faster, and more sustainable residential buildings.

Within one hour, we will set up a proper scene for simple, fast, and accurate daylight analysis with Ultralight for Designers. We will measure Direct sunlight and Daylight factor in multiple apartments, evaluate and interpret the results, and discuss advanced measurements and evaluations that can be performed with Ultralight for Specialist.

Speaker:

Ján Pernecký is the co-founder and CTO at Qubu. He is an architect, dedicated computational designer, and educator. Before Qubu, he co-authored the discrete assembly toolkit for Grasshopper, Monoceros, and the swarm simulation tool Boid. In 2014 he founded one of the first online resources for Grasshopper tutorials, the research Grasshopper Sessions.

New Plugin for Wind Tunnel Simulations Released: Tdyn Wind Tunnel


This plugin combines the 3D design capabilities of Rhinoceros with the smooth user experience and computational power of Tdyn Wind Tunnel.

The plugin allows you to perform CFD simulations in three simple steps:
  1. Automatic export of geometry created and prepared in Rhino to Tdyn Wind Tunnel.
  2. Definition of wind speed and symmetries.
  3. Launch the simulation and view the results!
This plugin is perfect for anyone who can benefit from aerodynamic analyses, regardless of their expertise in CFD simulations or fluid dynamics knowledge, for example:
  • Structural engineers seek accurate values of the wind loads.
  • Architects and urban designers who are willing to assess wind behavior around urban areas/buildings or enhance comfort inside spaces.
  • Designers (cars, motorbikes, etc.) looking for improved estimations of aerodynamic coefficient.
  • Fluid mechanics teachers whose purpose is to provide more intuitive and specific educational tools and content.
Furthermore, CFD experts will also find in Tdyn Wind Tunnel an extraordinary ally that will drastically reduce the preprocessing, meshing, and post-processing times while minimizing the associated errors.


The first execution of the plugin will check if Tdyn WindTunnel is installed on the PC and will automatically download and install it from the CompassIS Website. In subsequent executions, the user will be required to introduce the passwords needed for the execution of the Tdyn Wind tunnel.

The Rhino plugin is free, and Tdyn WindTunnel currently offers the possibility of evaluating it for free with temporal passwords, which can be obtained from our password generator.

ClimateStudio v1.3 is here! ClimateStudio is environmental performance analysis software for the architecture,  engineering, and construction (AEC) sector. Its simulation workflows help designers and consultants optimize buildings for energy efficiency, daylight access, electric lighting performance, visual and thermal comfort, and other measures of occupant health. 

ClimateStudio is a plugin for Rhinoceros and requires the latest service release of version 6 or 7.
