New bending-active timber project developed with Rhino & Karamba3D and Beaver3D

 


Developed as a viable tropical hardwood glulam hangar structure for the Global South, this project addresses the challenge of scaling timber construction in a context still dominated by massive steel and concrete industries. The structural hypothesis was a bending-active beam-string: More efficient than a conventional truss, especially in the connections, while remaining compatible with glulam production lines automated for straight elements.

Rhino and Grasshopper were used as the central parametric environment to control span, rise, subdivisions, curvature limits and cross-section constraints. The model was linked to Karamba3D for structural analysis and to Beaver3D for Eurocode 5 timber verification, including ULS/SLS checks and design-ratio visualization. The main challenge was a form-finding paradox: pre-assembly forces depend on beam inertia and system height, so simply adding material does not necessarily improve structural safety. Developed by João Pini at ITA Engenharia em Madeira and published as an article for the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures, the result is a low-carbon, low-cost, and scalable structural product.

The Pro-sumer: Computational Design for Regenerative Architecture


What if computational design wasn't about creating more complex forms, but about asking better architectural questions? 

Computational design is often linked to complex geometries and expressive forms. But its real value may be in providing architects with a framework to explore ideas, test alternatives, and make better-informed design decisions about how buildings respond to environmental, social, and spatial challenges.

The Pro-sumer explores how an office tower can evolve from being a consumer of resources into an active contributor to the city. Instead of treating sustainability as an added layer, it weaves energy production, water collection, food cultivation, and passive environmental strategies into the building's architectural logic, resulting in a mixed-use timber tower that reimagines the relationship between architecture, nature, and urban life. 

Developed in Rhino, the project used computational modeling to explore geometry, environmental performance, and spatial organization through an iterative workflow. The digital model was not just a representation of the final project; it was a tool for comparing options and refining architectural decisions as it evolved.

The project received Second Prize in the Buildner Timber SkyHive Competition and was later selected for a presentation at the Architecture Through Media Forums 2026 at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.

Misfits of Manufacturing brings together engineers, designers, fabricators, software developers, and digital manufacturing specialists who use Rhino and Grasshopper to connect design, automation, and production. The event focuses on workflows that bridge the gap between geometry and the shop floor by integrating Rhino with legacy CAD systems, CNC machines, industrial robots, laser cutters, ERP platforms, PDM systems, and custom software solutions. WASPer_3DP is a free Grasshopper framework for the design and fabrication of 3D-printed building envelope components.

This webinar will introduce the plugin as a Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) workflow that seamlessly connects computational geometry, performance assessment, slicing, and G-code generation within Rhino/Grasshopper.

Starting with façade and cellular infill design strategies, the session will demonstrate how WASPer_3DP supports the creation of customized opaque envelope components with open and closed cavities, including TPMS and polyhedral infills. The webinar will feature real-world case studies, an overview of the main tool categories, and a live demonstration tracking the process from initial geometry generation to fabrication-ready printing paths.

Juan Diego Vargas is a Colombian architect and PhD researcher at Politecnico di Torino, working across the Department of Energy (DENERG) and the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD). He is currently a visiting researcher at the ACTech Hub, University of Minho in Guimarães, Portugal. His research focuses on Design for Additive Manufacturing methodologies for 3D-printed building envelope components, integrating cellular geometries, performance assessment, and fabrication strategies for medium- and large-scale additive manufacturing. He is also the developer of WASPer_3DP, a free Grasshopper plugin for designing and preparing 3D-printed building components.

Computational design and BIM workflows are transforming the way structural engineers design, analyze, and document projects. Rhino and Grasshopper have become essential tools for connecting geometry, structural analysis, and BIM workflows across platforms such as Revit, SOFiSTiK, Tekla, Dlubal, SCIA, and Karamba3D.

In this online workshop, Junghwo Park, BIM Manager at Doka GmbH and certified BIM trainer by buildingSMART Austria, will introduce Rhino and Grasshopper for structural engineering workflows, with a focus on parametric design, BIM integration, and data interoperability.

This workshop is designed for structural engineers who want to incorporate Rhino and Grasshopper into their daily practice.

The journal Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) has announced a special issue on Applications of NURBS in Architectural Geometry, marking the 50th anniversary of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS). This special issue celebrates the enduring impact of NURBS on architectural geometry and invites contributions that explore both their achievements and limitations. 

The editors welcome submissions that highlight successful applications, discuss current challenges, and explore emerging approaches that may strengthen spline-based design and analysis in the future.

For five decades, NURBS have played a central role in geometric modeling, enabling designers, engineers, and architects to create and fabricate increasingly complex forms with precision and flexibility. Join this 16-hour online workshop and learn how to develop integrated computational design workflows for contemporary architecture using Grasshopper.
