Mos(kit)o device by the Institut Pasteur iGEM 2016 Team

The Institut Pasteur iGEM 2016 Team came up with the Mos(kit)o device, which includes a trap to capture mosquitoes, an analysis station to detect the presence of pathogens in them and a mapping tool of the local of the infected mosquitoes.

To conceive the device, Rhino was used by the multidisciplinary team, which included students from ENSCI-Les Ateliers design school, ESPCI chemistry and physics engineering school, Pierre and Marie Curie UniversityParis Diderot UniversityETSL Biotech School and Jean Monnet Law Faculty in the Paris area.

The trap and analysis station components were designed according to entomologists’ recommendations. A 3D printed version was generated and used as a demonstrator device for the iGEM competition, at several venues including BioDesign events.

Zika, yellow fever, and several other diseases (arboviruses) are transmitted to people from insects’ bites. Currently, there are no vaccines for most of these diseases. One of the strategies to deal with the issue is to carry out massive insecticide spraying, resulting in toxicity and resistance by the mosquitoes. The Mos(kit)o device will be an innovative tool to monitor the presence of infected mosquitoes, prevent, and help in an environmentally responsible way of spraying insecticides.

For the Mos(kit)o device, the Institut Pasteur Paris 2016 Team won a gold medal and three best prizes (Best Applied Design, Best Diagnostic, and Best Entrepreneurship) at the 2016 iGEM competition.

ShapeDiver now supports external plugins and API access

Plugin Support

ShapeDiver now allows uploading models using external plugins. So far, the first two plugins supported are Grasshopper's plugins Weaverbird and Human. The list of plugins will continue to grow steadily.

Weaverbird is a topological modeler that contains many of the known subdivision and transformation operators, readily usable by designers.

Human
extends Grasshopper's ability to create and reference geometry, and allows communication with a Rhino document. ShapeDiver only supports the texture mapping components for now.

Download Human from food4Rhino...

API Release

ShapeDiver GmbH also released the API for their viewer, making it possible for ShapeDiver users to integrate the viewer into web sites, as for product configurators or other eCommerce applications.

"It is easy to embed your models anywhere after they are uploaded on ShapeDiver. However, if you want to build a web application, a product configurator or even a full e-commerce system, you will need a little more flexibility. We now provide a programming interface that allows you to create fully custom web experiences based on the ShapeDiver technology".

ShapeDiver is a web service for publishing parametric 3D data. It is run by ShapeDiver GmbH, a limited liability company registered in Vienna, Austria. Alexander Schiftner, Mathias Höbinger, and Mathieu Huard founded it in 2015.

Christian Dunbar Designs

Christian Dunbar, the artist behind Christian Dunbar Designs located in Savannah, GA, creates sculpture and art furniture using architectural form that is simultaneously minimalist and sensuous. He hopes to express glass, water, wood, steel and stone in innovative ways that exhibit their beauty in unexpected and dramatic fashion. Throughout his entire career as a sculptor and furniture designer, Dunbar has always used Rhino through the entire design/build process.

"I "sketch" with Rhino, easily creating multiple form variations, often in the time that my peers hand sketch a single concept. On my larger scale sculptural pieces, the Rhino files go directly to the CNC operator or Digilab for processing. My productivity rate using Rhino, as opposed to the other software option, is hands down far higher" stated Dunbar.

For more information please contact Christian Dunbar.

inFORMed Matter Workshops Series: Clay, Polymers & Biomaterials - March, April, May 2017, Turin (Italy)

inFORMed Clay matter March 24-26, 2017

inFORMed Polymers matter April 21-23, 2017
inFORMed Bio matter May 26-28, 2017
digifabTURINg – Fablab Torino

Via Egeo 16, Torino

The idea for these workshops rose from a collaboration between Co-de-iT, Fablab Torino, and Officine Innesto, based on ongoing Co-de-iT research called inFORMed matter.

The inFORMed Matter Workshops Series is focused on the exploration of nonconventional additive fabrication processes aimed at producing form through the morphogenetic properties of matter and by embedding further information structures during the fabrication process itself by mechanical (robots, printers) or biological (organisms) constructor agents.

Its goal is to step beyond the current state of prototyping, according to which the physical prototype should be as adherent as possible to its digital counterpart, making fabrication a purely replicational process. Instead, by coding and embedding additional levels of digital and material information, new physical and aesthetic properties arise. In this way, the production and digital fabrication phase becomes an integral part of the design process.

By exploring the code-matter-machine interaction process, the potential emergent behaviors of the system can then be studied while, by tapping into the self-organization properties of matter, a new sensibility towards computational design/fabrication process can be learned and exerted.

TOPICS

The inFORMed Matter Workshops Series will explore different material systems in three different workshops:

inFORMed Clay matter workshop

This workshop focuses on the exploration of an integrated digital design and manufacturing process developed through an additive process of ceramic mixture material deposition. By simultaneously understanding material behaviors and tool constraints, participants will acquire the necessary feedback to iterate through the design and production phases by means of custom made digital tools and a 6 axis robotic arm fabrication setup.

inFORMed Polymers matter workshop

This workshop explores the design potentials offered by midair deposition of polymeric material (ABS, PLA). This digital fabrication process is particularly suited for the production of complex lightweight spatial structures, engaging in the design and development of efficient extrusion paths necessary to physically fabricate their designs by means of a custom robotic 3D printing setup.

inFORMed Bio matter workshop

This workshop focuses on the implementation and deposition of living systems (microorganisms) as main materials and agents of transformation of organic matters. Participants will explore different design strategies by programming specific morphogenetic processes and robotic behaviors for the synchronized deployment of both substrates/scaffoldings and of the living materials. Combining the unique potential of computation, robotics, and biological building agents, the workshop will offer the opportunity to explore, algorithmically design, and fabricate temporary structures capable of supporting growth. By simultaneously understanding living materials’ needs and behaviors, as well as constraints, participants will acquire the necessary skills to iterate through the design and production phases by means of custom made digital tools, biological agents and a 6 axis robotic arm fabrication setup.

Registration deadlines:
inFORMed Clay matter workshop – March 17, 2017
inFORMed Polymers matter workshop – April 7, 2017
inFORMed Bio matter workshop – May 5, 2017

To register for one or more workshops please email digifabturing@gmail.com
