Rhino User Webinar: From Footscan to Individual Shoelast

 Rhino User Webinar
From Footscan to Individual Shoelast
September 2, 2026, 4 PM (CEST)

Modern orthopedic shoemaking is moving from the workbench to the workstation. In this one-hour session, Martin Jaeger will show how he uses Rhino 8 and his own custom-built Grasshopper scripts to transform a 3D foot scan into a fully individualized shoe last with integrated orthopedic footbed correction.

Instead of relying on manual plaster casting and hand-finishing, this session demonstrates a parametric, repeatable pipeline that keeps every last precisely matched to the patient's anatomy while dramatically reducing production time.

What you'll see
  • How a raw 3D foot scan is cleaned, aligned, and prepared as a usable base geometry.
  • Building a parametric last-generation workflow with custom Grasshopper components.
  • Applying orthopedic corrections directly onto the last geometry using Rhino 8's native modeling tools.
  • Verifying and controlling dimensions and measurements with Rhino 8's tools throughout the process.
  • Exporting production-ready geometry for milling or 3D printing.

Who this is for

This session is designed for shoemakers, shoe designers, orthopedic shoemakers (Orthopädieschuhmacher), and orthopedic technicians (Orthopädietechniker) who want to bring digital, parametric workflows into last-making—no prior Grasshopper experience required.

Speaker bio

Martin Jaeger is a master orthopedic shoemaker (Orthopädieschuhmachermeister) who learned the craft from the ground up.

For the past 10 years, he has focused on additive manufacturing, and with his company Trans2form, he has made it his mission to lead his trade into a golden digital future.

Getting to know… Vivobarefoot: The Scan-to-Production Footwear Revolution!

In footwear design, innovation often means moving beyond traditional approaches, a path that Pete Davis, Computational Systems Lead at Vivobarefoot, knows well. With a background in professional breakdancing, Davis has introduced a fresh perspective to Vivobarefoot's BIOME innovation lab, leading the development of the VivoBiome line. Using advanced tools like 3D scanning, AI, and parametric modeling, Vivobarefoot is reimagining custom-fit footwear. In his recent interview with ShapeDiver, Davis shares insights into the digital tools and strategies driving this transformation, illustrating the potential of computational design in creating more tailored, sustainable shoes.

Parametric Footwear Texture by Cademy xyz

Cademy xyz's Parametric Footwear Texture online course offers a comprehensive guide to mastering Rhino and Grasshopper to create advanced parametric textures in footwear sole design.

The course includes 14 pre-recorded lessons covering 3D scan import, NURBS modeling, and attractor textures using LunchBox.

You'll also learn to prepare designs for 3D printing and digital fabrication, enhancing your portfolio with three unique texture variations. Additional resources include Rhino, Grasshopper, KeyShot files, and 3D printable .stl files.

"In this workflow, we will create advanced parametric textures for footwear soles using Rhino 3D, apply complex attractor patterns (3 variations) with Grasshopper (LunchBox). Learn to export for 3D printing and rendering in KeyShot. This is a fantastic opportunity to deepen your knowledge of essential 3D modeling tools for footwear design and enhance your portfolio. Please register to access our recorded workflow course and download Rhino/GH exercise files."
