TU Vienna - 1:1 Pavillon

TU Vienna - 1:1 Pavillon

Christian Wittmeir, Kabru and Heinz Schmiedhofer (Institut für Architektur und Entwerfen - TU Wien) organized a design studio last winter term in which Grasshopper and RhinoScript were the main working tools.

This summer term they picked one idea of a modular structure which they have developed in depth and which they are going to build in 1:1.

"Rhino has been a fundamental tool in the development of the project and the students entered into the realm of Grasshopper with great fun".

The opening date and location of this project are now confirmed: 03.10.2009 at "Museumsquartier" in Vienna.

Sponsors are welcome, please contact Christian Wittmeir.

Visit for additional details about this project. There is also a Grasshopper file for download explaining the kinematics of the invertible cube module.

PanelingTools for Rhino 4.0 Updated

A new release of PanelingTools plug-in for Rhino 4.0 SR5b or later is available for download. In order to successfully load the plug-in, you need to download and install the new Microsoft C-Runtimes.

New in this release:

    • Added new command ptGridSurfaceDomainVariable. The command divides surface domain with variable distances using surface curvature, attractor points, sun vector and random distribution. Check the manual for details.
    • Added new option to support variable distances. Option name is "DistanceMethod" and commands that now support it are ptExtrudeEdges, ptOffsetEdges, ptFinEdges, ptOffsetPoints and ptOffsetBorder. Distance can now be variable between a minimum and maximum values using surface domain with variable distances using surface curvature, attractor points, sun vector and random number generator.
    • Fixed unroll bug when output to sub layers.

MachStudio direct export from Rhino

StudioGPU has released a free Rhino plug-in to directly export 3D models into MachStudio native GXB formats. These models can then be imported into MachStudio Pro where an artist can create and manipulate lights, materials, and HDR cameras in a real-time, non-linear workflow environment to achieve film quality results.

MachStudio Pro harnesses multi-threaded GPU (graphic card processor) computing to change the equation of time vs. quality. Frames that normally take 40 to 80 minutes each to render can be rendered in seconds at comparable quality.
