Project for a Multipurpose Cultural Center in the city of Matera (Italy)

New Fundamentals Research Group is a team of Italian architects and academics coordinated by Professor Giuseppe Fallacara. The team is affiliated to the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAR) of the Polytechnic University of Bari, and develops research projects which deal with the relationship between innovation and tradition in architecture.

Professor Fallacara's students from the 3rd year course in Architectural Design (Master Degree in Architecture - Polytechnic University of Bari), with the support of tutors Maurizio Barberio and Micaela Colella, have been developing different proposals for an architectural design project for the city of Matera. They've put together a video to summarize their projects.

The goal was to simulate the activity of a large architecture practice, involved in the design of a public building, which generally requires the contribution of a large number of architects and designers. Each group had to deliver a design proposal, a rapid-prototyped model, an article about their own project and the relative part of the final video. The project concerns a new Multipurpose Cultural Center, a contribution from students in form of new urban and architectural ideas for the city of Matera, which has been selected as European Cultural Capital for 2019. To model their architecture, they have been using mostly Rhino and Grasshopper.
