Two nice Rhino presentations by the TU Graz

The Rhino Day at the TU-Graz took place in October 2009.

Dipl.-Ing. Mag. Dr. Milena Stavric and Herr Dipl. Ing. Christian Freißling (Institut für Architektur und Medien - TU Graz) were kind enough to share their respective presentations:

The documents are in German but it's worth take a look at them just for the beautiful images.

François Roche book presentation at the AA London

François Roche lecture at the AA London: Ecosophical Apparatus and Skizoïd Machines
29 April 2010

Machines are always pretending to do more than they were programmed to do. It’s their nature. The blur between what they are supposed to do, as perfect alienated and domesticated creatures, and the anthropomorphic psychology we intentionally project on to them, creates a spectrum of potentiality, both interpretative and productive. Read more here...
R&Sie(n) was founded in 1989 by François Roche and Stéphanie Lavaux. Their architectural work is simultaneously organic, biological and critical. It seeks to articulate the real and/or fictional, geographic situations and narrative structures that can transform them.

See www.new-territories.com/blog/architecturedeshumeurs/ and www.new-territories.com.

Many of François Roche projects were done in Grasshopper and with the help of the Rhino SDK.

Rhino, Grasshopper, Kangaroo, and Geometry Gym at the AA London

Rhino, Grasshopper, Kangaroo and Geometry Gym at the AA London
May 12, 2010, from 1 to 3pm

Architectural Association (AA)
School of Architecture
36 Bedford Square
London
WC1B 3ES
Map

As part of an Architectural Association lecture/event series organized by Marco Poletto, Simply Rhino UK brings together the following software developers:

  • David Rutten - Grasshopper:
Some background and history, recent developments, and maybe some discussion on future developments.
  • Daniel Piker - Kangaroo:
Kangaroo is a live physics engine for Rhino and Grasshopper. It embeds powerful mathematical models of real physical behavior directly in Rhino's 3D modeling environment; so designers can use it to integrate with and inform a design from the very earliest stages.

Kangaroo enables rapid exploration not just of catenary and tensile structures, but also makes it possible to creatively play with and invent new physical form-finding techniques.

A great variety of naturally occurring processes and behaviors can be simulated, and ideas of self-organisation and material intelligence can be applied in a very immediate way.
  • Jon Mirtschin - Geometry Gym:
Jon will present on using Rhino and Grasshopper for geometrical modelling, primarily for architecture and structure. Geometry Gym has developed plug-ins, featuring tools and techniques including geodesic domes, minimal surfaces, mesh relaxing, tessellation and parametric steel frame modeling.
These three presentations will be followed by a joint Q&A / discussion session.

There will also be some additional work, made possible by this combination of Grasshopper and Rhino, presented by current students at the AA School.

Registration details:
  • There is no charge to attend this event, but registration is required. Please send an email to fionuala@simplyrhino.co.uk or call on 0208 498 9900.
  • For members, current students or staff of The AA School of Architecture - You can
simply turn up on the day.

Python advances in Rhino

python-powered-w-140x56
We continue to improve the Python scripting language in the Rhino 5 WIP. The newest Python upgrade includes Python’s standard library. The library provides access to system functionality such as file I/O, as well as standardized solutions for many problems that occur in everyday programming.

Python is a modern development language which aims to combine power and flexibility with clear syntax. Through Python you can now access both RhinoScript and advanced SDK functions in the same program.

To find out more about Python in Rhino, visit our new Python community site.

More marine applications, free plugins

Orca3D has released two new plugins, Orca3D Offset Table and a RhinoMarine translator. Both are now available as free downloads.

Orca3D Offset Table is for people that do not own Orca3D, but would like to be able to create a table of offsets that open in Excel.

offsettable

The RhinoMarine to Orca3D Translator is for those who have models that contain data that is specific to RhinoMarine, such as sections, weight/cost items, and other settings. This translator will batch convert many files at one time into a format compatible with Orca3D.
