3D carvings for woodworkers' workbenchs

Bainbridge Island Artisan Resource Network is a Seattle community facility for artisans to share resources, education, and workspace. To help out this group, Tim Celeski designed a new workbench for the hand tool woodworkers.

The space required nine benches built on a budget. Tim added the challenge to make each workbench unique. So, in Rhino, he designed a unique 3D carved leg vise for each bench. He then used a CNC to carve each vise chop. The CNC sped up the carving and the precision work.

Watch this video introduction to see how they were made:

3dRudder: A groundbreaking foot-powered 3D mouse for Rhino

3dRudder was introduced last week in London at the Rhinoceros user group meeting organized by Simply Rhino. The 3dRudder CAD Edition lets you navigate your 3D models with your feet, freeing your hands for design only.

The 3dRudder CAD Edition is the newest addition to functionalities offered by the 3dRudder foot-powered motion controller. Based on the simple premise that using your feet is the most intuitive way to move around an object, 3dRudder lets you move around your designs while leaving your hands free to shape your creations.
  • Experience Orbit, Dolly, Pan, Vertical Pan, and Orbit Camera with effortless movements of your feet on the 3dRudder.
  • Free your hands for design only. By transferring the view mode to your feet, your hands are relieved and totally focused on creating.
  • Work more efficiently: shape and navigate simultaneously as the 3dRudder offers transparent commands.
  • Can be combined with any mouse or graphics pen.
  • Ergonomic and intuitive. Navigate with effortless movements, master the controls in less than a minute.

rat[LAB]EDU - Summer School 2017

Parametric Design: Data Driven Art Installations
1 country // 2 cities // 1 agenda // 50+ students // 10+ professionals // 1 showcase

Summer School 2017 - a 3-day intensive workshop for design students and professionals

Using Rhino and Grasshopper, attendees will delve into computational and parametric methods to create data-driven art installations, physically manifested into a space through hands-on fabrication and assembly. The experimental studio will run in two cities in India (New Delhi and Mumbai) and investigate the agenda of ‘filling the void’ at the art installation scale, through the use of computation and parametric methods.

Studio is designed as a 3-day event in both cities comprising technical tutorials, teaching sessions, prototyping, and presentations culminating in a symposium / round-table conference / open discussion with leading / emerging professionals that demonstrate computation, parametric design or alternative techniques in their work, practice, or academia.

Cities/Dates:

  • New Delhi June 30 - July 2 (Fri/Sat/Sun)
  • Mumbai July 7-9 (Fri/Sat/Sun)

About rat[LAB] EDUCATION...
rat[LAB] EDUCATION is an initiative by rat[LAB]-Research in architecture and technology (www.rat-lab.org) to start a new discourse in architecture and parallel design disciplines with the use of computational design and its various subsets. Spread across various cities and countries, we are establishing a global dialog in the domain of computational design by actively organizing and participating in workshops, lectures, presentations, and symposia. While rat[LAB] has taken a top-down approach of exploring computational design through industry, a parallel, bottom-up approach is also in-line to involve students of all levels from design and related backgrounds.

Free Webinar: Surface continuity in Rhino - Intermediate

Free Webinar:
Rhino 5 Intermediate - Surface continuity in Rhino

McNeel Europe
June 2017
11-12 (CET)

Most models have to deal with surface continuity at some point, as it is very unlikely to have an object made out of one single surface.
We will cover Position (G0), Tangency (G1) and Curvature (G2) continuity, learning about matching and blending surfaces together using a desired continuity at each side. Also, we will use tools to analyze both the continuity and quality of surfaces.

The model used for this webinar is a boat hull, where smooth transitions and surfaces are required.

We strongly recommend that you watch the webinar on curves before attending!

Solid knowledge of Rhino is required. Neither a microphone or webcam are required. The seminar is not platform dependent; it is aimed at both Windows and Mac users.

The Tech Team experts of McNeel Europe will conduct the webinar in different languages. Remember that all previous webinars can be watched here.

ExpressMarine Webinar, June 14th

Join Orca3D for their webinar this week on Wednesday, June 14th, at 9 AM EDT. Register here.

ExpressMarine is a new plugin for Rhino that enables designers to rapidly build up parametric 3D models of marine structures. This webinar will demonstrate some basic techniques and then move on to more advanced modeling. You can view the previous webinar on YouTube (Tip: Set the YouTube video quality to HD1080p).

ExpressMarine's main advantage is the dramatic reduction of modeling time, achieved through the integration of 2D drawings and the 3D model in a single, common environment.

Weight and center of gravity results become available much earlier in the design tender phase and the model topology allows easy updates throughout all later design stages.

It is the ideal preprocessor of a structural model to be used in other marine design software for detailed engineering, class drawings, weight distribution and tracking, FEM analysis, etc.

Registration is limited, so be sure to register soon.
