The Hillside Sample Project: Bringing a 50-year masterpiece to digital life

 


In the early 1960s, a 23-year-old audacious McGill University architectural student submitted his master's thesis, a novel, mixed-use community, to the Montreal Expo 67. The result was Habitat 67, and the architect gained international renown. The architect was Moshe Safdie.


Moshe Safdie designed the 1000-unit high-quality housing for a dense Montreal urban environment. One of the first mixed-use concepts for the time, Habitat 67 incorporated residential units, office spaces, hotels, schools, museums, and more into its self-contained community. This practice is now commonplace, but at the time, it represented a radical departure from prevailing architectural practices. Another novel idea was the prefabricated apartments, which were assembled on-site. And each apartment included a roof garden and natural lighting. 


Despite being a landmark in architectural history and inspiring countless architects, Habitat 67 is primarily considered an unfinished dream. The built Habitat was scaled back to 158 residences, less than half the original size.

Using Unreal Engine 5, The Hillside Sample Project is a virtual recreation of Moshe Safdie's original vision for Habitat 67, made with Unreal Engine and RealityCapture.


The model was built in Rhino and 3ds Max using basic materials and then imported into Unreal Engine 5 using Datasmith

Getting to know... WASP: Italian 3D Printing Innovation!



World’s Advanced Saving Project (WASP) in Massa Lombarda (Ravenna- Italy) designs, produces and sells 3D printers made in Italy. 

Inspired by the Potter Wasp, which builds its own nest using material recovered from the surrounding environment, WASP was born to develop large-scale 3D printers that build houses using natural materials available in the territory. The wide range of WASP 3D printers has been developed to address human needs, including food, housing, health, energy, work, art, and culture. 

In this interview, ShapeDiver covers the fundamental aspects of WASP's journey, including the company's origins and its team, as well as the practical applications of their technology across various industries. It also explores the functionalities of their online configurators, including their capabilities for users to export G-code compatible with DeltaWASP printers. The decision to use Grasshopper and ShapeDiver sheds light on how these tools enhance the user experience and open up new design possibilities.

New Book discusses generative evolutionary fashion design for sustainability using Rhino


Accelerating Sustainability in Fashion, Clothing & Textiles is a thirty-four-chapter book that collates leading-edge research and industry best practices to provide a ‘one-stop shop’ exploring the complex and interconnected issues surrounding sustainability in fashion, clothing, and textiles. The practical and digestible chapters include innovative examples and perspectives from different regions of the globe, addressing topics from policies to supply chain issues and materials innovation.

Chapter 31, Fashion Ex Machina: Human–Machine Collaboration to Support Sustainability through Customized Design and Production, written by Elizabeth Bigger et al., discusses transitions toward sustainable bespoke production for Industry 5.0, agile fashion system requirements, emerging processes, and human-machine collaboration. 

Elizabeth’s work with generative garment design for sustainability is discussed using Grasshopper in Rhino. Parametric fashion patterns created in Grasshopper then use the generative evolutionary solver Galapagos for multi-objective optimization of the garment design. The fashion industry is a wicked problem because of the interdependent factors of garment design and production that create significant climate problems (6-10% of global emissions). Using Galapagos for multi-objective optimization solves many interdependent sustainable design issues at once in the design phase.

In this webinar, Junghwo Park will present the dynamic and instant data interpolation using Rhino and Grasshopper between various BIM applications, such as VisualARQ, Autodesk Revit, Inventor, Solidworks, and Tekla Structure. Participants will encounter various use cases in which highly segmented construction data are exchanged from the design phase to the realization phase and how the graphical and non-graphical data is federated as structured information. This sounds like nothing different than our daily struggles. However, the parametric BIM pipeline will help to revise the multi-disciplinary BIM coordination seamlessly and instantly.

Junghwo has exceptional experience in architecture, industrial design, and graphic design in Australia, Austria, Germany, and Korea. He has a well-developed technical grasp of presentation as applied to building and graphic design practice. He is interested in advanced architectural design and building technologies. New version of Lark Spectral Lighting Grasshopper plugin

 


ZGF Architects and the University of Washington Applied Research Consortium (ARC) have released version 3.0 of Lark Spectral Lighting on food4Rhino and GitHub. The Lark project is a global, peer-reviewed, open-source software to expand the toolkit for researchers and designers predicting non-visual light for human health.

Lark v3.0 allows for custom spectral power distributions for the sky, sun, electric lights, glazing, and finish materials. The workflow can be used by architects, lighting designers, manufacturers, researchers, and public health officials to test any configuration of daylight and electric lighting for any building type. 

Applying measured spectral data for light sources has been a driver for Lark, first with skies (v1.0), then electric lights (v2.0), and now the sun (v3.0). Their research shows the color of the sun transitions from warmer spectrums at sunrise (e.g., violet, orange, red) and sunset to cooler spectrums (e.g.,  blue) at its zenith, which can largely impact non-visual light stimulus. This cycle can be simulated with full-spectrum lighting for improved health and well-being in any indoor environment.

New Plugin for Wind Tunnel Simulations Released: Tdyn Wind Tunnel


This plugin combines the 3D design capabilities of Rhinoceros with the smooth user experience and computational power of Tdyn Wind Tunnel.

The plugin allows you to perform CFD simulations in three simple steps:
  1. Automatic export of geometry created and prepared in Rhino to Tdyn Wind Tunnel.
  2. Definition of wind speed and symmetries.
  3. Launch the simulation and view the results!
This plugin is perfect for anyone who can benefit from aerodynamic analyses, regardless of their expertise in CFD simulations or fluid dynamics knowledge, for example:
  • Structural engineers seek accurate values of the wind loads.
  • Architects and urban designers who are willing to assess wind behavior around urban areas/buildings or enhance comfort inside spaces.
  • Designers (cars, motorbikes, etc.) looking for improved estimations of aerodynamic coefficient.
  • Fluid mechanics teachers whose purpose is to provide more intuitive and specific educational tools and content.

The first execution of the plugin will check if Tdyn WindTunnel is installed on the PC and will automatically download and install it from the CompassIS Website. In subsequent executions, the user will be required to introduce the passwords needed for the execution of the Tdyn Wind tunnel.

The Rhino plugin is free, and Tdyn WindTunnel currently offers the possibility of evaluating it for free with temporal passwords, which can be obtained from our password generator.

Grasshopper Meets Lacquer: Innovating Art with Ekkehard Altenburger


The artist Ekkehard Altenburger showcased his latest work, which merges Grasshopper definitions 
with the traditional technique of Vietnamese lacquer art painting.

As a well-respected Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Visual Arts in Hong Kong, Altenburger collaborated closely with a master lacquer artist in a Hanoi studio to master the ancient Vietnamese lacquer art technique. With his expertise in programming robotic systems and the extended use of Grasshopper code in his research, Altenburger took inspiration from the convergence of ancient traditions and modern technology.

Altenburger's fascination with the shift from high-end digital environments to the humble surroundings of a Hanoi studio is evident in his exhibition. Working in intense humidity, crucial for the drying and curing of Vietnamese lacquer derived from tree resin, Altenburger's art exudes a unique blend of ancient artistry and contemporary innovation.

The exhibition, held at Galerie Lunette in the heart of historic Hanoi, allowed Altenburger to showcase his works alongside established artists such as Claudia Van and Dinh Ngoc Canh.

Looking forward to further exploration in this field, Altenburger is drawn to the immersive experience of working in Hanoi studios. He anticipates many more productive days in the sweltering heat as he continues to explore how digital technology opens new aesthetic avenues in this ancient technique.

Unveiling the Past: Historical Jewelry and its 3D Reconstruction

Cadia Romano, a passionate jewellery enthusiast, began her studies in Florence at the Lao school at 16. She specialized in Goldsmithing at Il Tarì and Il Perseo in Italy, as well as El taller de Joyeria in Barcelona and Central Saint Martin in London. Graduating from the University of Florence in 2010 in the Culture of Fashion and Style Goldsmithing section, Cadia expanded her skills in sacred (thanks to Paolo Penko) and sexual (thanks to the start-up The Precious Lust) goldsmithing, enameling, engraving, lost wax, and more.

Joining the esteemed Bvlgari High Jewellery workshop, Cadia spent seven years crafting exquisite pieces while refining her 3D design and printing expertise. Today, she works as a freelance designer. She shares her knowledge as a lecturer at the Accademia Italiana University in Rome.

Bubble Pavilion Documentary


The Bubble Pavilion is a project led by Professor Roberto Narvaez at the University of Seville (Spain), which combines geometric, structural, and constructive research with educational innovation.

Based on the geometric relationships found in spherical soap bubbles of equal radius, a geometric algorithm is designed using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper to adapt the natural arrangement of bubble clusters to any free-form surface. Subsequently, another algorithm is designed in Grasshopper to materialize the structure using laminated wood panels and digital fabrication tools.

The overall result is a self-supporting system with a uniform shell behavior that is highly resistant to typical architectural stresses. The pavilion takes the form of a single vaulted envelope, approximately 11 meters long and 6 meters wide. However, the designed system can be adapted to any size and shape for a multitude of applications in architectural design, including facades, roofs, or architectural envelopes of any kind.

Sybren de Graaf, CEO and founder of Sfered, created an innovative solution for the eyewear industry using Grasshopper and ShapeDiver's infrastructure. With a background in architecture, Sybren discovered the potential of Grasshopper and used his design knowledge to create a revolutionary online service for opticians. Sfered's service allows for the customization of frames using a 3D parametric model placed on the client's scanned face. The result is a personalized and comfortable fit unique to each individual.
