The Grasshopper Paradox - Tools Agnostic Mind-set

The recording of our Educator’s Lab webinar: The Grasshopper Paradox - Tools Agnostic Mind-Set is now available!

In this session, Dr. Milad Showkatbakhsh, Director of AA EmTech, turns a seemingly contradictory idea on its head: to truly master any tool, you must first be free of attachment to it.

Dr. Showkatbakhsh makes the case that architects are no longer sculptors of form; they are editors of data. He shows how platforms like Grasshopper become truly powerful not when you learn their menus, but when you've already learned to think computationally: breaking complex design challenges into modular, solvable processes the way nature has always done.

If you teach design, practice it, or just wonder where architecture is heading, this is a must-watch.

food4Rhino webinar: CAD for all - Raven AI for Grasshopper Beginners (April 23, 2026, at 5 PM CEST)

April 23, 2026, at 5 PM CEST

Unlock the power of Grasshopper without the learning curve—with Raven AI by your side.

Move faster in Rhino with conversational AI, whether you are a complete Grasshopper newbie or open it occasionally, and with other people's scripts.

Raven is built for Rhino and Grasshopper. It reads your scripts, plugins, and custom tools so that you can describe intent in plain language, iterate on geometry, and debug in context. This session keeps the camera on Rhino-first workflows: Commands, curves, solids, and real files. Not on abstract automations.

Join the McNeel team and Raven to see why a CAD-native copilot behaves differently from a generic chat tool, and how to apply it in practice.

In this live session, you will get:
  • Ways to turn plain-language goals into Rhino-native geometry and edits without relying on Grasshopper expert knowledge.
  • A workflow for debugging and refining modeling and script logic with an assistant that reads your actual file context and gets it.
  • How to tap your plugin ecosystem when you need it, without memorizing every component name.
  • Examples of Raven across AEC, engineering, and manufacturing when CAD is the hub.
Speaker: Moritz Rietschel is co-founder of Raven, building human-centered AI tools for design and creativity. His background includes research at UC Berkeley on human-AI collaboration in CAD with Prof. Kyle Steinfeld and robotic fabrication with Prof. Simon Schleicher. He has lectured internationally on AI-based creative tools, hosted workshops at MIT and Tongji, and published peer-reviewed work on LLMs for CAD. Reach out if you want to chat with the Raven team.

Who this is for: Rhino users who want AI in the CAD loop—from heavy viewport modelers to occasional Grasshopper users. This webinar is not a plugin-heavy Grasshopper deep dive, but it is for those who want to add AI power to their classic CAD work in Rhino.

food4Rhino webinar: From Parametric Model to Shop Floor with SheepMetal (April 22, 2026, at 4 PM CEST)

April 22, 2026, at 4 PM CEST

In this webinar, we'll explore SheepMetal, a Grasshopper plugin that brings sheet metal logic directly into parametric workflows. We'll cover how to work with existing sheet metal parts, unfold them with precise bending compensation strategies, and create new parts entirely within Grasshopper using automated workflows—from flat pattern to fabrication-ready output. Whether you're setting up a parametric-to-production pipeline or looking for more control over how your designs translate to the shop floor, this session gives you a practical starting point.

Bio: Felix Brunold is an industrial designer and co-founder of VektorNode, working across architecture and metal fabrication. He focuses on parametric workflows for fabrication—making sure design models produce reliable cutting, bending, and assembly data without manual translation in between. He works closely with manufacturers to ensure that what is designed can actually be built.

  • Especially when working in "Projection Base" mode on top of a selected Mesh, it gives new possibilities in Reverse Engineering processes.
  • Many detail improvements like a dynamic deviation handle, new mesh area selection methods, or support for using a bunch selected CVs in Cyberstrak's powerful CV.
  • Improved efficient modeling.
  • As usual, all modeling commands contain a local Undo/Redo and can be used in parallel with associative dynamic analyses, allowing instant control of the shape quality.

La Comtesselation renovation - La Drôme, France (by STERLING PRESSER Architects + Engineers)

La Comtesselation renovation - La Drôme, France
by STERLING PRESSER Architects + Engineers

Located on a sacred site in the Drôme, France, La Comtesse is a renovation project that bridges ancestral wisdom and local know-how with contemporary design through an intervention titled Comtesselation (Comtesse + Constellation).

The project seeks to inscribe a celestial map onto a traditional stone dwelling, treating the architectural act as a contemporary rite of alignment that rehabilitates the existing structure, renewing it with respect for local craftsmanship and history. The design joins the solid, rectangular stone base with a new organic form—revealing the site’s spirit rather than changing it.

The two-pitched roof complies with local regulations, but softens into a gentle curve that flows outward into a wooden pergola. This fluid extension opens the home toward the landscape, blending structure and nature. This wooden mesh acts as an elongated pergola, using fluid geometry to extend the roof's capacity as an awning au vent, balancing cosmic elevation with terrestrial grounding. Every joint and curve corresponds to a point in an imagined constellation, reflecting the sacred energy integrated through Kogi principles and the rhythm of the universe.

Sustainability comes through careful use of materials: the original stone is preserved and repurposed, reducing waste and giving new life to the structure as a spiritual and enduring threshold between the human and cosmic worlds.

"To execute these complex, organic forms and ensure every joint aligns with the intended celestial symbolism, we utilize Rhino to generate a precise digital model that provides the technical framework for a local carpenter to realize the intricate timber engineering."
