Call for Papers: CAGD Special Issue on Applications of NURBS in Architectural Geometry

 


The journal Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) has announced a special issue on Applications of NURBS in Architectural Geometry, marking the 50th anniversary of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS). This special issue celebrates the enduring impact of NURBS on architectural geometry and invites contributions that explore both their achievements and limitations. 

The editors welcome submissions that highlight successful applications, discuss current challenges, and explore emerging approaches that may strengthen spline-based design and analysis in the future.

For five decades, NURBS have played a central role in geometric modeling, enabling designers, engineers, and architects to create and fabricate increasingly complex forms with precision and flexibility. From early freeform design exploration to today's integrated design-to-fabrication workflows, NURBS continue to underpin many digital tools used across the architecture, engineering, and construction industries.

Join this 16-hour online workshop and learn how to develop integrated computational design workflows for contemporary architecture using Grasshopper. As architectural projects become increasingly complex, designers need tools and methodologies that go beyond traditional linear workflows. This workshop introduces a computational design approach that connects parametric modeling, façade design, geometry analysis, data visualization, and automation into unified, adaptable systems. Through hands-on exercises and real-world architectural case studies, participants will explore how computational thinking can improve design quality, accelerate iteration, enhance interdisciplinary coordination, and support complex project delivery. The methodologies presented are informed by workflows developed for large-scale international projects, including projects at Zaha Hadid Architects.

BMW Design Studio in Munich is looking for an intern to join its Generative Design Team.

The role focuses on digital form development and node-based modeling workflows using tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper. Students or recent graduates with strong computational design, 3D modeling, and design skills are encouraged to apply.

The internship offers the opportunity to work on exterior and interior surface development, computational workflows, and digital design processes within the BMW Design team.

Advances in Architectural Geometry (AAG) is a conference where both theoretical and practical work linked to new geometrical developments is presented. It involves architects, engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, software and algorithms designers, and contractors. AAG has become a reference in both research and practice, supported by the direct participation of the most renowned architectural design and engineering offices, as well as research laboratories.

The symposium is a biennial event. It was held first in 2008 and 2010 in Vienna, 2012 in Paris, 2014 in London, 2016 in Zurich, 2018 in Gothenburg, 2020 in Paris, and 2023 in Stuttgart.

In 2025, for the first time, AAG will take place in North America at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA, from November 16th to 19th, 2025.

Ping-Hsiang Chen, a former computational designer at Zaha Hadid Architects, is leading a three-day Grasshopper Level 2 online course. This hands-on experience explores the principles of computational geometry and parametric design. 

After the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Have an in-depth understanding of data structure
  • Work between different geometry types such as NURBS, Mesh, and SubDs
  • Understand the use cases of mesh geometry
  • Optimize workflow using blocks and caches
  • Work with layers, materials, and views in your Rhino document

Course requirements: This Level 2 course requires prior experience in visual programming with programming. You should be familiar with the Grasshopper user interface and the essential algorithms and data structures in Grasshopper (Chapters 1 and 2). 

Software requirement: Rhino 8

Online course fees for each course: EUR 395 (+VAT). Full-time students and university teachers receive a 50% discount (proof of status required). We will confirm your seat after your payment has cleared.
