Getting to know...YŪ by YOU Jewelry!

Read Shapediver's interview with Julius, Max, and Paul. They are the minds behind YŪ by YOU, an innovative German jewelry brand that uses computational design to turn any name into a unique wearable jewelry piece.

"The very first version of the algorithm was written in processing and not Grasshopper. Julius spent an entire semester abroad in the United States, where he gained enough knowledge of Grasshopper to develop the YŪ algorithm and design further."

AA Autumn DLAB (London) - Sep 6-12, 2021

In its 16th year, Autumn DLAB is a one-week program taking place at the AA London HQ’s unique atmosphere.

Autumn DLAB experiments with the integration of advanced computational design, analysis, and large-scale prototyping techniques. The program builds on its expertise in complex architectural design and fabrication processes, relying heavily on materiality and performance. Autumn DLAB brings together a range of experts— tutors and lecturers—from internationally acclaimed academic institutions and practices, Architectural Association, Zaha Hadid Architects, among others.

The research generated at Autumn DLAB has been published in international media —ArchDaily, Archinect, Bustler—and peer-reviewed conference papers, including SimAUD (Simulation in Architecture and Urban Design), eCAADe (Education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe).

Autumn DLAB investigates the correlations between form, material, and structure through the rigorous implementation of computational methods for design, analysis, and fabrication, coupled with analog modes of physical experimentation and prototype making. Each cycle of the program devises custom-made architectural processes through creating novel associations between conventional and contemporary design and fabrication techniques. The research culminates in the design and fabrication of a one-to-one scale prototype realized by using robotic fabrication techniques to integrate form-finding, material computation, and structural performance.

The evolving history of La Sagrada Familia: From ashes to masterpiece

If you have traveled to Barcelona, La Sagrada Familia was most likely on your must-see list. Started in 1882, the unique and ever-evolving church has a fascinating construction history.

In the 1990s, when we out-of-towners first visited La Sagrada Familia, it was roofless with a few volunteer contractors milling around. It appeared to be a project destined to creep along in our lifetimes. But instead, it has achieved phenomenal progress and engineering design.

ArchDaily documented a nice history of the building of the Sagrada Familia.

It's now functioning as a church, with a projected finish date of 2026.

The Sagrada Familia is still a must-see.

New DesignMorphine webinars (in September 2021)

DesignMorphine announces these new webinars in September 2021:

September 19
Tutor: Daniel Caven

Residual Digital V1.0 will investigate the emergence of digital anomalies created by simple form-finding techniques. The course will include a brief intro to Rhino 7 SubD tools and simple Grasshopper form-finding definitions—the generated forms will be used as the design figure to be distorted and broken up. We explore many different variations of simple modeling in Rhino and dissect the models in Grasshopper. The decimated forms are then populated with different geometries, orientations, and arrangements to exploit dimensional artifacts. Tools explored are component models, block modeling, and parametric sculpting. A semi-reversed process of design will be used to create and build digital scenarios. Finally, the designs will be brought in Lumion, where participants will learn to add scene elements such as sun, grass, trees, weather, and other elements. These can be beautifully rendered to encompass an overall completed scene with the accumulated digital artifacts. After participation, individuals will be comfortable with some basics to intermediate skills in Grasshopper, Rhino SubD skills, and Lumion basics to create multiple designs and a scene in which they can render their final models.

Tutor: Marvin Bratke

Procedural Assemblies V2.0 aims to develop a scalable, reversible, and modular architecture system from a kit of parts primarily with Grasshopper's Wasp plugin. The webinar will investigate innovative design approaches and project visualization with Escape to create assembly-based construction systems from discrete voxel logic. Using the research in reconfigurable material solutions and scalable timber construction lead to proposals for innovative spatial strategies for environments and communities of the digital age. We will investigate modular building blocks, advances in low-cost and low-tech pre-fab construction, and their representation. Methods of digital reassembly and the creation of novel building systems and aggregation logic will be explored using generative design tools. The resulting architectural and computational bottom-up strategies for reversible building systems will lay out manufacturing and economic processes to support the system. Computational logic is applied to allow design solutions built up upon generative and flexible planning parameters. Ultimately, the designs propose a scenario to use our digital toolset and architectural design thinking to establish new design workflows for providing affordable and socially sustainable spaces.

Tutor: Sovona Ghatak

Anexact Aescapes V.1 will explore the advanced digital modeling techniques to generate complex architectural compositions. Anexact architectural objects resist being reduced to pure geometric forms. These
ambiguous, irreducible, and rigorous objects embrace the immense qualities that exist in any form. The multiple techniques and operations can be leveraged in the conceptual stage of any project. The explorations will wrap several frames, and we will dive deeper into the notion of how newer properties appear when autonomous architectural masses interact with each other. Participants will learn to develop models that speculate on various qualities of articulations and the interaction of masses. Rather than using a sketch as an end goal, we use it as a starting point and then take it forward while developing a 3D composition, seeing how far we can go with it using a series of simple compounded operations in Rhinoceros. The webinar will demonstrate how to take full advantage of manual modeling in Rhinoceros to create complex geometries you might not believe could be manually designed without parametric tools.
