The Mediated Matter group at MIT Media Lab is expanding the potential of additive manufacturing and 3D printing.
The research group, a collaboration between MIT and Harvard University, has built an additive manufacturing machine that extrudes molten glass. Neri Oxman, the MIT Media Lab director, and her team have used the technique to produce a wide range of vases and bowls. But Oxman emphasizes that the new glass-printing technology could be valuable for components in architectural design and building systems.
