Algorithmic modeled cakes
It's not often that we get to use delicious and Grasshopper in the same sentence.
Dinara Kasko is a former architect who became interested in patisserie. Kasko began designing cakes with extraordinary shapes. "I like sharp, straight lines."
She is now using algorithmic modeling to build her cakes. She programs and scripts the cakes, then models and prints a kit to pour the silicone mold on a 3D printer.
Facades+ AM: Miami 2018
The Facades+ conference series is a robust dialogue encompassing all things building skin—bridging the profession, industry, academia, operations, and ownership. The best of the Facades+ 2-day event is distilled into a quick-take morning forum with a definite local flair. The program includes three sessions covering issues unique to the region, including innovative building skins, high-performance facades, and Miami’s newest projects. These well-rounded, expert dialogues will inform and inspire.
Some of the questions this conference will address are:
- How are architects incorporating regional sensibility into the apparatus of the building envelope?
- What technologies are being tapped?
- What processes are required to bring these to the market?
- At the other end of the spectrum, innovation is inspired by vernacular approaches. How are these vernaculars transformed?
- And what is the role of technology and building code in effecting these transformations?
- Finally, there is a category of buildings that manifests the learning/adaptation processes of architecture itself. Facades are often rebuilt, transmuted, or even exchanged. What are the factors determining this process today?

Boolean Operator—another interesting project by Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY
Boolean Operator is an irresistible terrain for children to play. |
Boolean Operator appears to have bubbled up from the ground, or perhaps dropped from the sky. The white aluminum sculptural architecture is both massive in scale, yet delicate. Parts are as thin as 1mm in places where the curvature is tightest and thick as 2mm thick on the larger spans.
Take a look at this fun project and see what inspires Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY.

Biomimicry and computational design in a facade
Gaurav Goel announced the publication of his first article in Window & Facade Magazine India.
This article talks about how biomimicry and computational design has influenced the discourse of facade design and is illustrated with one of Gaurav's design projects from a London competition.
Gaurav holds a master's degree in architecture from the University of Nottingham and a master's diploma in parametric design from Spain. In 2016, Goel founded Parametric Curiosity, an architecture studio and social media blog for sharing digital explorations in parametric design.

Print seamless patterns on fabric in minutes
Digital patterning, such as GeminiCAD Systems, reduces the manual steps typically associated with 2D pattern making.
The recently introduced ExactFlat Monarch software system adds the ability to apply texture-mapped graphics directly to the pattern with perfect flow matching. With Eastman automated cutting systems, the data is used to print and cut perfectly aligned pattern pieces ready for assembly.
This YouTube video demos the software ExactFlat Monarch as it is used for furniture manufacturing.

Nemo for Grasshopper available on food4Rhino
Rhino is a great exchange platform, present almost everywhere in naval architecture or marine engineering fields, and a wide open ecosystem allowing the developers' community to add their own functionalities. Based on this observation, Nemo's idea is to create Grasshopper tools applied to ship design, with the addition of several modules. The purpose is to do direct internal computations using Rhino API functions for the common needs of the naval architect and to create bridges between external specialized software by optimizing interoperability and data exchanges.
The main features developed are hydrostatics computation, meshing export to flow simulations, transverse section export to MARS2000, resistance prediction using HOLTROP and SAVITSKY methods, or data export to NAVCAD. Additional tools are provided for lines plan drawing or NACA section generation. And more will come.
All this work started in the frame of an academic research project and has led to the release of Nemo plugin for Grasshopper.

Garden Thorn irrigation system
Here is a fun product from a Rhino user, Handy Camel. It's their contribution to combating global warming with water conservation.
The Garden Thorn is a spike made of recycled plastic. It's a nifty irrigation device that injects water three to six inches underground and eliminates runoff and evaporation, so plants get the water they need at the roots.
The Garden Thorn spike is placed in the ground, not on the surface like soaker hoses. There is no runoff or evaporation.
It is an easy-to-use, underground irrigation system requiring:
- A garden hose
- A rubber mallet to protect the thorn when tapping into the ground
- A hose end-cap for one end of the hose

- Geometric optimization
- Topological optimization
- Structural performance informed form finding
- Understanding analysis algorithms embedded in Karamba and visualizing results
- Complex workflow processes in Rhino, Grasshopper, and Karamba3D
Requirements
- The workshop will be taught in English.
- Basic Rhino and Grasshopper knowledge is recommended.
- No knowledge of Karamba is needed.
Participants must bring their own laptops with either Rhino 5/Rhino 6 and Grasshopper installed. A 90-day trial version of Rhino can be downloaded from Rhino.
