Some of the key features of the new V-Ray 1.5 for Rhino
V-RayRT® - A revolutionary rendering engine providing instant feedback and streamlining scene setup. Because V-Ray RT is built upon the same robust core as V-Ray, it is seamless to transition between V-Ray RT and production rendering.
Dome Light - Create simple, artifact-free image-based lighting using the Dome Light. Its powerful importance sampling analyzes HDR images and optimizes light tracing and GI precision.
V-Ray Proxy - An indispensable tool for managing scene memory and efficiently rendering massive amounts of geometry. V-Ray Proxy objects are dynamically loaded and unloaded at render-time, saving vital RAM resources.
Lens Effects (Glare / Bloom ) - Simulate the natural lens effects that occur when photographing highlights.
Dispersion - Trace and refract light based on its wavelength.
Retrace Threshold - Reduce Light Cache artifacts and improve the appearance of glossy reflections and refractions when using the time-saving feature. Use light cache for glossy rays.
Ambient Occlusion - Generate shading based on an object’s proximity, and enhance GI details without significantly increasing render time.
VRayDirt - Simulate shading around corners and crevices of objects based on a radial distance. VRayDirt can be used to produce a variety of effects, including ambient occlusion renderings.
Interpolation (Reflections and Refractions) - Accelerate rendering by approximating and caching the effects of glossy reflections and refractions.
IES Light - Use photometric data to provide accurate light definition.
Sphere Light - Create spherically shaped area lights.

Creating building forms with Rhino, CNC, plywood, concrete, and fiberglass
CW Keller, an architectural millwork, furniture, and design firm, drew on multiple resources to fabricate the roof of the Boston Harbor Park Pavilion. The Pavilion's open-air roof is actually two complex curved canopies. To define the surfaces, optimize the material yield, and translate the data to machine-ready CNC files, CW Keller relied on Rhino.

IAAC Global Summer School 2012 - Barcelona
The IAAC Global Summer School for the 2012 academic year will continue to investigate multiscale strategies for the reconstruction of our inhabiting environments (home, city, planet). The last few years of technological, social, political, economic, and cultural changes (at both the global and the local scale) demand that we rethink what kind of habitat humanity will live in in the coming decades, given that space in all its aspects (landscapes, cities, places, buildings, and bodies) is undergoing dramatic transformations.
Aimed at: The program is aimed at students from a variety of compatible fields, such as architecture, engineering, fine art, design, landscape architecture, programming, etc.
Calendar: Program duration: 13-25 July 2012
The program is structured in three sections:
1. Digital Design and Parametric Modelling (13-17 July)
2. Interactive and Informational Development (18-21 July)

AA MakeLAB workshop
MakeLAB
Hooke Park, Dorset
Monday 9 – Monday 16 April 2012
AA MakeLAB explores strategies for the design and implementation of digitally driven fabrication technologies in the context of Hooke Park’s forestry and workshop resources. It is organised in collaboration with the AA’s Digital Prototyping Lab.
The course will investigate a range of design and production methods, setting up customised digital work-flows that are informed by corresponding material systems and their technical and spatial potential. Experimentation will be conducted in small, workshop-led groups proposing innovative design-and-build methodologies using sensor-based generative design methods connected to customised fabrication hardware. Prototypical structures will be constructed using specific materials and sites available at Hooke Park. The workshop offers the unique opportunity to explore the application of highly experimental technologies towards the construction of architectural structures at 1:1.
Each team will be assisted by experts in particular software and hardware technologies, including Rhino and Processing based work-flows and Kinect, Arduino and CNC based sensors, micro-controllers and actuators. For participants without specific experience several working software and hardware solutions will be offered at the beginning of the course. Supporting technologies such as laser cutting and CNC machining will also be available.
The workshop program includes lectures, tutorials, and design reviews and will culminate in a final presentation with invited critics.
