Translating water into a 3D form

The province of South Tyrol in Italy has drinkable, high-quality, and mineral-rich tap water. But still, the local population buys water in plastic bottles.

To entice the local population to consume tap water and as a part of the 2013 Bologna Water Design at Cersaie, Italian designer, Andreas Trenker of the Free University of Bolzano designed a series of localized water carafes.

Using five characteristics of the different water sources—sea level, temperature, water hardness, conductivity, and pH—Trenker used Rhino to generate the shapes and translate them to a 3D form. The molds were then machined to make the carafes with Rhino and RhinoCAM.

AA Visiting School SEOUL, Aug 11-21

AA Visiting School - Seoul
Emerging Corporate Territories: Trade of Shades
Monday - Thursday, August 11-21 2014
Seoul National University, Seoul

Registration is now open to students and professionals alike interested in participating in an 11-day AA Visiting School design workshop in Seoul, focused on exploring the form, image, and identity of the corporate buildings.

The Visiting School returns to Songdo, the newly finished corporate hub of South Korea and the wannabe Singapore-Hong-Kong international node of the booming economic future of Northeast Asia. Smart, Leed-certified, directly plugged into an airport, and equipped with one Central Park and one Venice Canal, Songdo is the latest venture in the corporate real-estate bonanza.

So new and so fast with so much glass, and so few people walking down its streets. This sleek ghost town is not only waiting for its people but also itching to have its first architectural reading. So join us as we depart from the scale of the master-plan and delve specifically into these shimmering buildings, to understand each node of this wired operational network through its own face and skin.

Taking as a given the dominant form of the typical plan, the deus ex machina of architectural solutions, we will challenge this discriminant sprawl of towers strictly vertically. Each student will propose a full bleed curtain-wall facade system, which will speak of feeders such as economic and technologic drivers as well as corporate aesthetics and architectural fetishes.

What story will your facade want to project?

PS, invisible towers are forbidden.

The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates, and young professionals. Software requirements: Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino (SR7 or later), or any CAD software knowledge is preferred.

"TRANSLATE" Workshop - Structural design in material fabrication - Rome (Italy)

Rome, Italy
14-18 May 2014

In this 5-day workshop we will translate the typical typology and materialization of the house into the definition of surface-active structures. We combine the system of geometry, structural design & fabrication and construction into a new era of architecture.

We follow three lines of thought to translate structural design in material fabrication. First, ultra-lightweight, rethinking shape and material. Second, dealing with the same single material components aggregated within a network, working with the elements' directionality and their connections to perform stability. Third, we will rethink the definition of the brick.

We will design, analyze and present our translations in both digital and physical prototypes -- from tabletop models to 2m high structures.

Grasshopper, Karamba and Digital Fabrication tools drive our design evolutions. With structural design, we will play with the type of forces in elements, orientation, force flow, geometry, restraints, and connection. We use this structural behavior to search for new links between materiality, form and construction, progressing towards a unique relationship of structure, construction and fabrication.

We will present our translations through digital and physical prototyping, showcasing the process of linking digital and physical inputs as a continuous feedback loop, rethinking structural design and material fabrication.

Tutors: Manja Van De Worp (NOUS Engineering London) and Aldo Sollazzo (Noumena)

A new organization to accelerate digital fabrication

Streamlining Design to Fabrication

The Digital Fabrication Network (dFab Net) is a new community of fabricators and manufacturers; hardware and software suppliers; and academics, designers, and researchers, working together to improve design to fabrication.

Digital fabrication advancements are transforming industries at all levels. Designers have more and more sophisticated digital design tools. Yet design to digital fabrication remains slow and expensive.

“Design-to-fabrication problems are too complex to tackle alone,” said Bill Kreysler, President of dFab Net. “Finally there is an organization bringing everyone together to work on these issues.”

The organization’s diverse membership encourages innovation through cross-industry collaboration. Members can learn about processes and technology from many unrelated industries.

You are invited to join the world’s innovators who are embracing technology to change the game of design to manufacturing.

Using Grasshopper for snowshoes

When you live in Norway you must understand snow. And snowshoes. First, the Norwegian company Fimbulvetr did extensive research of 6000 years of snowshoe evolution -- give or take a few years. Then they used Grasshopper to help design a new snowshoe.

From their web site: "We set out to create a stronger, lighter, more durable and ergonomic snowshoe from scratch. Previous snowshoes typically have many breakable parts, feel detached and limit movements. Through redesign, prototyping and testing we developed a high-end tool for superior, personal, winter mobility. The result is a whole new snowshoe experience, best described as a natural extension of the foot. Try it, and never go back."

Fimbulvetr currently sells their snowshoes through their web site.

DATA BODIES Grasshopper workshop, Paris (France)

Data by itself has no meaning. It fills databases. This data must be examined in order to become meaningful. Humans must interact with it. Information arises when humans examine the data. Knowledge is created when information is transformed through human social interactions.”

DATA BODIES Grasshopper workshop
Paris, France
May 9-11, 2014

The space in which we live can be monitored in many aspects and appears to be to be a gradient of data in continuous evolution and change. One of the major advantages of parametric tools is to inform the design processes with accurate, specific and variable, in space and time, data streams.

DATA BODIES is a Grasshopper workshop that will focus on its nature as an information processor and how it can manipulate data, streaming inputs from various sources and using data feeds to inform geometry or data structures from the very simple up to more complex ones. The aim is to understand information and data articulation as a spatial and architectural operation. Results may range from pure data communication protocols, dataviz or data-driven geometries, depending on the skill levels and aspirations of each participant. The brief is also open to the suggestions and opportunities that may rise during the workflow.

Rhino 5, Grasshopper, gHowl, MeshEdit, WeaverBird, Firefly, Lunchbox will be used during the workshop.

TUTOR: Andrea Graziano, Co-de-iT
CURATOR: Francesco Cingolani, superbelleville coworking
