Rhino 7 GPU / Graphics Card Tests (by SimplyRhino UK)


SimplyRhino UK has completed its latest GPU test report, looking at performance not only with Rhino 7 (and Rhino Raytrace rendering engine) and popular companion products such as KeyShot, Twinmotion, V-Ray for Rhino and Chaos Vantage.

"Mars Architecture" workshop by PAACADEMY - March 26-June 11, 2022


The "Mars Architecture" studio workshop by PAACADEMY (March 26-June 11, 2022) is devoted to exploring the computational design capabilities applied to space architecture.

The studio workshop led by Valentina Sumini and her team aims to design a resilient and sustainable infrastructure for human missions on Mars. This design challenge requires a new holistic approach, in which computational design plays a key role. Indeed, Space Architecture relies on some fundamental pillars that are intrinsically interconnected: space sciences, engineering, industrial design, ergonomics, medicine, psychology, and art.

Students will be challenged to work in teams within a cross-disciplinary environment at different scales, from urban to architecture and interior design, relying on the knowledge and technologies developed for space applications. A challenge for both space and terrestrial architectures is to consider the relationships between human activities and the resources thar support them.

The Mars Architecture Workshop will bring a new computational design approach to this design challenge in order to sustain human space exploration on Mars.

Topo Deep Dive workshop for topographic modeling


Landau Design is presenting a workshop to show the full range of uses for the free and Pro components of Land Kit. It will engage its participants interactively, giving them the chance to engage the Land Kit developers. Show Land Kit your real-world examples and see how Topo Kit can address the challenges of the modern designer. 

Specific examples will include comprehensive topographic modeling and design tools for earthworks, layout, retaining walls, curbs, paths, delineating material areas, smoothing, patching your topography, and much more! In addition, newly developed components and improvements to be released in the next version (1.0.5) of Land Kit will be included in the workshop.

This deep dive workshop is designed for users with a basic knowledge of Rhino and Grasshopper, although new users are welcome to join.

Since 2009, many third-party plugins have been developed to enable interoperability between Autodesk's BIM software Revit and McNeel's Rhino/Grasshopper, achieving various degrees of success in ease of use, performance (speed), and extendibility. Using one of Rhino 7's new frameworks known as Rhino.Inside, Revit and Rhino/Grasshopper can now work together more seamlessly than ever before. There are now not only opportunities to combine both platforms' strengths in a flexible, efficient, and responsive way, but almost the entire ecosystem of third-party plugins for Rhino/Grasshopper can share workflow with Revit much more conveniently. Additionally, the Rhino.Inside technology also allows third-party developers to further push the limits by creating their Grasshopper components (via C#, and even Python) that can access the Revit API directly in the same runtime environment. In this context, Junghwo Park, BIM Specialist at Umdasch Group Ventures, will teach a Rhino.Inside.Revit online workshop at McNeel Europe.

Rhino-CVC - New object library for HVAC

 


Rhino-CVC is a 3D object library associated with Grasshopper definitions, distributed in a Rhino toolbar, allowing to create piping, VMC and heating elements, automatically and fully configurable with ergonomics.

Parametric elements include:

  • 3D and 5D curves to be welded
  • Concentric and eccentric reducers
  • Dished ends to be welded,
  • Equal and reduced tees to be welded
  • Radiators (fully configurable)
  • Straight tubes (steel, copper, stainless steel, multilayer, and PVC)
  • Bendable tubes (steel, copper, multilayer)
  • Piping layers

The tubes have built-in yardage (length, weight, and capacity). The layers are preconfigured (choice in the tools).

Bills of materials—very clean with the possibility of formatting—are automatically generated individually: piping, fitting to be welded, equipment, and VMC.

This plugin receives updates to increase its rich capabilities further and also to improve them constantly because we are more than anything, eager to offer the best tool possible to have as much fun using it as we had to create it!

UBC Design League Designathon, February 19-20

The UBC Design League is hosting the first-ever Architecture Designathon, which is similar to a hackathon, but for CADing instead of coding. Participants will get the chance to experience real industry prompts, network, and receive design feedback from industry professionals. 

The competition involves teams of two choosing one of two design prompts, and everyone is given 36 hours to create a solution. During the solution-making process, mentors will drop by and teams can receive pointers on their ideas. Afterward, professionals in the industry will judge the final projects and prizes will be awarded; prizes include 3D printers, drawing tablets, and even a firm visit! 

Admission is free and open to students of all faculties. It will take place in person (subject to change) at the UBC Vancouver campus.

Design Modelling Symposium Berlin - September 2022


Technology is the answer, but what is the question?, famously asked Cedric Price to an audience of architects and engineers in 1966.

For researchers, educators, and practitioners in the Architecture Engineering Construction (AEC) fields, the question could not be clearer, nor the answer more urgently needed. In the age of the growing inequalities, climate crisis, ecosystem collapse, the AEC sector accounts alone for almost 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, it is responsible for eco-systemic changes and plays a central role in creating and perpetuating social injustice.

Among the many campaigners, communities, institutions, and governments worldwide that have declared a state of emergency, what are the radical measures we can take to change the way we plan, build, operate, maintain and dismantle our built environment?

The Design Modelling Symposium 2022 (Berlin, September 24-28) aims to provide critical perspectives on current advances in computational methods in AEC in this age of crisis and hope.

Recent advances in design and construction technology may hold the promise to help us trace a new path, but, at the same time, they hold the threat of turbo-charging existing destructive paradigms. Our collective practices are tantamount to many uncontrolled planetary experiments, deploying technologies and practices at unprecedented scales first and worrying about the consequences later. We urgently need to negotiate a myriad of global and hyper-local equilibria between the built and natural environment.

By synthesizing artistic, theoretical, and technological perspectives and positions, the symposium aims to challenge innovative digital techniques in the design, materialization, operation, and assessment of our built environment, examining them in relation to their impact on the future of societies and the environment. In this context, the digitalization of design offers multiple routes to identify the material, social, ethical, ecological, and other dimensions of new, necessary, and radically measured equilibria.

The conference is structured around four thematic areas that explore Almas in which new, radical measures need to emerge, spanning from the tools that enable design, simulation, and materialization to new ways of approaching the relationship between built and unbuilt environments.
