Join us for the next Special Training Session at our European office in Barcelona. Clemens Preisinger, structural engineer at Bollinger Grohmann and plugin developer, will lead a three-day Karamba3D Workshop February 7-9, 2018. 

Clemens will introduce Karamba, a parametric structural engineering tool which provides an accurate analysis of spatial trusses, frames, and shells. Karamba is fully embedded in the parametric design environment of Grasshopper, a plugin for the 3D modeling tool Rhinoceros. This makes it easy to combine parameterized geometric models, finite element calculations, and optimization algorithms like Galapagos.

New course on structural analysis with Karamba now available


ThinkParametric now has a new course on structural analysis with Karamba.  This course will teach you how to check the performance and structural integrity of your designs and how to enhance them.

Karamba can provide an accurate analysis of spatial trusses, frames, and shells early in the design process. It's fully embedded in the parametric design environment of Grasshopper, a plugin for the 3D modeling tool Rhino. This makes it easy to combine parameterized geometric models, finite element calculations, and optimization algorithms like Galapagos.

In this intro course:
  • Understand how to use Karamba. The course starts by briefly going through the installation process and the different licenses that exist. 
  • Build definitions with Karamba with six basic steps.
  • Create your first load case scenario using two simple beams and a point load. The course covers the different components of Karamba, their inputs and outputs, and what they all mean. 
  • Create a simple canopy to use for structural analysis and to control parametrically. 
  • Perform structural analysis of the structure. Take a critical look at the results, like maximum displacement, resulting force of gravity, and internal elastic energy. 
  • Visualize the results to better understand how the structure behaves under loads. 
For this course, no prior Karamba knowledge is required. The free Karamba version is sufficient, which you can download.

Online Hull Design and Fairing Training for Professionals by RhinoCentre NL



If you are a designer, engineer, or naval architect and you need to design high-quality hulls with Rhino in a fast and flexible way, this new online training is for you.

This training unveils the mystery of Class-A fairing at your own pace.

One advantage of creating hulls in Rhino is that you can directly integrate them into your overall Rhino design.

Three online training modules are now available:

  1. Prepare 2D Input is interesting for anyone who needs 2D input for creating 3D models: ACAD drawings, PDFs, and images. Especially for ACAD drawings, you’ll learn a more intelligent approach than just opening a DWG file and modeling. That often leads to a big mess and loss of original information.
  2. Hull Design and Fairing Level-1 teaches the basics of modeling and fairing any vessel hull. Also, you’ll receive a Rhino file with example hulls of six ships, four yachts, and three workboats. Use these hulls to kick-start your own projects.
  3. Hull Design and Fairing Level-2 teaches advanced Class-A fairing skills and a reverse engineering technique to model a high-quality 3D hull from an existing 2D lines plan.


These three modules are usually taught in the four-day Hull Design and Fairing Level 1&2, which is now also available as online training as a bundle of the three modules for only €995. This promotion ends on January 1, 2018.


Named Rapid Hull Modeling Methodology, and developed by RhinoCentre in cooperation with other professionals in the marine industry, this method is applicable to ships, yachts, boats, workboats, and multihulls. Since 2012 this training has been taught worldwide at shipyards and design offices.

Rapana Library



Rapana is the first street library in Varna, Bulgaria, created by a team of young architects and designers.

Nowadays young people’s lives revolve around the digital era and this decreases the popularity of books among their generation. A team of architects and designers (Yuzdzhan Turgaev, Boyan Simeonov, Ibrim Asanov and Mariya Aleksieva) decided to partially solve this issue by building a street library.

Varna is a city located at the seaside and is often called The marine capital of Bulgaria. This is the main reason why the chosen concept shape of the library resembles the shell of a sea snail.

The design was inspired by nature and its organic shapes. The installation takes into consideration the most important aspects of the city’s identity – the sea and its value to Varna’s citizens. The abstract construction unravels from a single focal point and develops into a semi-circle while creating a public space and shelves for placing books at the same time.


Rapana was designed using the parametric design tools Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, which give architects the possibility to try different shapes and variations. Using the software, the team tested over 20 variations, changing the number of vertical and horizontal wooden pieces and their width and height. The final design fitted the budget and the open library’s concept and provided sitting spaces, easy access for the readers, plus a tiny stage for street artists and lounge sessions. Using the Rhinoceros 3D tools the construction was divided into pieces, which were produced using a CNC machine from a 250 x 125 cm. wooden sheets. The street library was built using 240 wooden pieces and the full capacity of the library is 1500 books.

Vertical Variables 2.0, a workshop supported by the Union of the Architects in Bulgaria, will focus on the applications of various computational strategies in the design of high rise buildings. As a new architectural paradigm emerges with the development of the new technologies, parametric tools are becoming essential and particularly applicable to modern skyscraper design. In this regard, the participants will be introduced to computational design techniques which will lead to form finding and optimization through various parameters.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to Rhino and Grasshopper, which will be the main tools to carry out studies of the final design. Participants will be guided through the writing of parametric definitions in Grasshopper and the applications of various plugins, mainly Kangaroo, WeaverBird, Lunchbox, FabTools, MeshTools, Ladybug, and KeyShot.

New CFD webinars with SimScale and Rhino


Fluid flow simulation (CFD) enables architects and engineers to predict and optimize the performance of building in the early stage of the design process. Even though simulation is already widely used in mechanical engineering, the adoption in architecture and construction is quite low, due to the lack of knowledge and affordable tools.

So SimScale, McNeel and Vind-Vind joined forces to create a free online training about the application of simulation in AEC, tailored to the needs of architects and construction engineers. By participating, you will:

Researcher / Developer wanted in Singapore


The Advanced Architecture Laboratory at Singapore University of Technology and Design is looking for a researcher. The researcher will support software development in Grasshopper for an exciting project that combines architectural design, mathematical optimization, and multivariate visualization. The project aims to develop optimization and design space exploration tools for architectural designers that are more intuitive and efficient than existing ones.

The position entails GUI development, visualization tools, and interfaces between existing software components. Depending on the skills and interests of the candidate, greater involvement with other components of the project (such as benchmarking, user testing, and publications) is possible. The starting date is as soon as possible. More details are available upon request.

Requirements:

  • A  Bachelor's degree in computer science and related disciplines, or in architectural design with proven programming skills. 
  • A Master's degree is preferred. 
  • Knowledge of C# or another .NET language. 
  • Familiarity with Windows Presentation Foundation and development using the Grasshopper SDK is not necessary but considered an important asset.

SimAUD 2018 conference at TU Delft

Master Course in Parametric Design at Controlmad Madrid

This is a unique study program in the world that introduces you to parametric design and digital manufacturing product design, architecture, landscape, digital fabrication... Algorithmic Accessories V3.0 by DesignMorphine

In this Algorithmic Accessories V3.0 Workshop session, we will look at the available emerging technologies used to create mass-customized accessories. We will bring the fabrication of novel ideas back into reach for the designer. The center point of the workshop will be the design of a sizeable choker necklace piece, inspired by coral growth and the hyperbolic structure. We will also elaborate on the structure, delving into the many aspects connected to the algorithm that creates this form. Also, we will look at pattern work found on the surface and observe how the FDM print method interprets this result when it comes down to fabrication.

Details

On the technical side of the workshop, we will focus on learning the UI and building the definition in Grasshopper on Rhinoceros, using the parameters to create and also restrain the forms so that they can be processed by the PLA print software and manufactured for real-life physical use by an FDM printer. The participants will learn to create a definition step by step and use the parameters they build to customize and create iterations of their shapes. Participants will bake the hypothetical creations into real mesh objects that can be exported for rendering and manufacturing. For the rendering, we will use KeyShot. Participants will learn about environments and materials in a real-time rendering engine. And finally, the objects will be repaired and prepared in Meshmixer and arranged in Cura for the print queue for final presentations.

Grasshopper Workshop Series in Poland



Intro_##.gh is a cyclical workshop-like event taking part at the Object office in Poznań, Poland.

This event's intention is to provide a relaxed and flexible tutoring experience, with only one goalgetting to know Grasshopper better. Starting with a very exhaustive introduction, you'll then venture into the computational geometry world in whichever direction you like.

Schedule

The long duration of the series (with the possibility of extension) will enable each participant to come up with their own research problems during the learning process. The scope of those problems will have a major influence on setting the direction of each workshop. While a couple of initial meetings will be solely spent on Grasshopper basics, the latter part of the series will have a more open character.

Each meeting day starts at 10 AM and lasts till 5 PM, with an hour-long break for lunch (14 hours of tutoring per meeting).
