Paneling the Terminator Genisys environments



Film designer, Andrew Reeder, used Rhino and the PanelingTools plug-in to resolve one of Terminator Genisys' most complex environments. The plug-in's speed and ease of use enabled Reeder and the film's conceptual team to arrive at an unusual design aesthetic appropriate for the storytelling and also to address many of the complex fabrication issues of the solution.

Tanusas - retreat and spa


Tanusas Resort, a nook cuddled by breezes and palm trees, where the sea softens its sensible space. 

"For me the goal of this project was the proper reading of the local architecture re-interpreted in a high tech tool such as Rhino. Giving me the freedom to design freely the whole magnitude of the project. During the process I never did any physical model. All digital, surrounded by aboriginals in a very undeveloped environment. 

The architecture itself merges with the surroundings, to outline the local design in a contemporary fashion.

I designed every single detail of this project with Rhinoceros and it was the best decision I ever make."

The good, the bad, the not-so-ugly


Kevin Caron typically uses his 3D printer to create his sculptures. Recently he expanded its uses to print a pedestal for a recently sold art work. In the process he also created an explanatory video for this simple but practical Rhino use.

The pedestal was a round base with an oval top and required a more robust program than the CAD program Kevin had been running. This is where Rhino came in. Getting straight sides is a "piece of cake. It did it just perfect, once I found the right button."

Ornaments for a White House Christmas tree

One of our online training students has made it to the White House! Well, not really. But his ornament has. Antar Hall entered the White House 3D-Printed Ornament Challenge and finished as one of the five grand prize winners with his ornament, Presidents of Christmas Past & Present.

The ornaments have been 3D printed and are now hanging in the East Wing of the White House for the holidays. They will later go to the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Three of the runner ups also used Rhino to create their designs: starball, Essence of the Ice, and The Christmas State of Mind Ornament.

Sharing your Rhino license


Just a reminder, a single-user commercial Rhino license is a license for one concurrent user at a time.

But yes, we do want you to share your commercial Rhino license when you are not using it… as long as it is under your control. The best way to keep control is to put your licenses in the Zoo.

Installing and using the Zoo is very easy (and free). Details…

Besides using the Zoo, here are a few other things that will help protect your license.

  • Register to make it easier for us to help in case of a lost or stolen license. 
  • Buy from an authorized Rhino dealer.
  • Keep your license keys in a safe place… just like you would cash.
  • Never share your license key.

Fimbulvetr snow shoes, ready for this season


In March we did a post on Fimbulvetr snowshoes designed with Rhino (and Grasshopper). We finally met the designers and saw those delightful snowshoes up close. We were at our 2014 Rhino meeting in Spain -- a few days full of outstanding presentations, conferences, and networking. Two of the speakers were the brothers, Kristian Wenstøand Fredrik Wenstøp (Pivot Produkt Design), discussing the crampons, flotation, weights, and easy on-and-off. We were not disappointed and personally, I am ready to take up snowshoeing.

Now we are anxious to see who will sell them in the United States. Meanwhile, Fimbulvetr ships globally from their web site.

Kangaroo wins ALGODeQ competition


To recognize outstanding achievements in algorithmic design, the first ALGODeQ international competition for algorithmic design programs has been completed. The competition gathered 190 entries from 43 countries, searching and finding innovative computational approaches in architecture. Kangeroo won the highest prize in the category 'Infrastructure as the grounding matrix for design'.

Kangaroo was in good company. The two other prize winners were RhinoVault and LMN Architecture.

Michael Hansmeyer, one of the jurists, commented, "The ALGODeQ competition proves that architects and designers are no longer limited to existing software packages --- they are instead designing their own. This frees the architects of the confines and restrictions of these packages, yet perhaps, more importantly, it demands of them a fundamental rethink of how a design comes into place."

"Almost all of the ALGODeQ approaches result in designs that would previously have been difficult to calculate, or even to conceive of. And thanks to advances in fabrication technology, these new architectures are increasingly transcending the computer screens and are rendered - physically- into the real world. An exciting time awaits us."

Kangaroo is a live physics engine for interactive simulation, optimization, and form-finding directly within Grasshopper.



Project EGG finished


"We are very happy and proud here at the studio to announce that Project EGG is complete. We have cooperated with hundreds of enthusiast 3D printers from all over the world in order to build the largest community 3D printed project to date. It's here and it's really lovely. The first exhibition in the Netherlands during Dutch Design Week was a success.

We've worked for more than a year to have it 3D printed. One of the many nice things about EGG is that it is totally made in Rhino and Grasshopper. And as I said yesterday to someone who asked about which 3D program I used and why, my answer was: How on earth could I have done this with any other program: a building consisting of 4760 different and unique stones.

So thank you, all 3D printers and all other people involved and McNeel for this rocking software!"

A smooth BIM/FEA workflow in Rhino


Geometry Gym has implemented an exporter for Karamba (Grasshopper Structural Analysis plug-in) to IFC. The data can then be used to import into commercial structural analysis software such as GSA, SAP2000, Robot, Sofistik, SCIA, etc. Often projects have clients that mandate particular commercial software (or require software to be certified).

Directly exporting the Karamba database saves users from manually rebuilding the model in alternative software (or maintaining duplicates of components within Grasshopper).

This could also easily be used for RhinoBIM, and potentially VisualARQ (if desired to provide functionality for engineers). And structural analysis is only one aspect. IFC is also capable of conveying other types of analytic information such as energy, environmental, MEP and simulations such as pedestrians.


Rhino Meeting 2014


On October 29-31 some of the main actors of the Rhino development, distribution, and training scenes gathered together in Castelldefels, Barcelona, (Spain) to learn and share their last experiences with Rhino.

The event, sponsored by 3DconnexionRoland and Wacom, consisted of a series of conferences and networking sessions that brought inspiration and knowledge to an audience of over 200 participants coming from 35 different countries. Some of the topics covered during the conferences included the last developments at McNeel (Rhino 5 for Mac, Grasshopper, food4Rhino, Kangaroo, Developer Tools, Training and Support, RhinoFabStudio), as well as sessions that were an open discussion to comment on the latest technologies in the fields of Design, AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction), and Digital Fabrication.

The keynote speakers at the event were kind enough to share some outstanding projects done in Rhino that challenged the software limits thanks to the authors' creativity. These were:

CLIMATE RIBBON™ videos



CLIMATE RIBBON™ is a design by Hugh Dutton Associés that combines precision engineering and environmental design with an elegant sculptural form: an exciting union of art and science. 

It has been designed through an holistic computation process using Grasshopper with plug-ins Ladybug and Hoopsnake. The videos (Video1, Video2) show the process of generating the blades using datascapes in order to make architecture respond to climate performance parameters.


In December the Parisian design firm with Francesco Cingolani is hosting the 2nd edition of DESIGN by DATA, an advanced Grasshopper workshop in which they will go through the whole design process of the ribbon.

Brief Outline

To imagine a city is to express more fully its living character, its essence, rooted in the everyday hustle and bustle that shape its formation. The imagination creates a place within a place, a sanctuary that expands our perception through transcending reality and broadening the horizon. The relationship between what is imagined in the city and what actually exists is fundamental to linking a place to its prospects. It enables these prospects to play a role in the discussion about the identity and peculiarities of the place.
We seek to discover Mecca as explorers and dig deep into collecting and unraveling what lies beneath the surface. The overall ambition of the visiting school is to compile a body of research about the city that lies beyond the holy mosque and to record and represent both the visible and invisible landscapes of the city, to explore the everyday life of the inhabitants and the pilgrims. We will venture to speculate and imagine the future of the city. The visiting school studio will collectively produce a section that cuts through the entire city, revealing the heart of the imagined city.
The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates, and young professionals.

UMI 2.0, Urban Modeling in Rhino

Umi is a Rhino-based plug-in that analyzes a neighborhood or city's outdoor comfort, operational and embodied energy use, walkability and daylighting.

Umi is developed by the Sustainable Design Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Version 2.0 enhancements include:
  • In addition to operational building energy use, walkability, and bikeability, umi can now also calculate embodied energy and floor area ratios (FAR). 
  • Operational energy simulations use the EnergyPlus-based “shoeboxer” algorithm as presented by Dogan at SimBuild 2013. 
  • Non-geometric building simulation assumptions are stored in a new template format as presented by Cerezo at SimBuild 2014. 
  • Umi projects are now stored in a single *.umi file which contains the Rhino scene file, the epw weather file, building modeling templates as well as all simulation results. You can export any of this data to use it separately. 
  • A new results viewer allows users to analyze and export simulation results as well as import results generated from third party simulation environments. 
  • Selected umi projects can be found on the new umiverse site. 
Take umi for a spin. 2.0 is significantly different from 1.0 so we encourage you to consult the updated user guide as well as a series of video tutorials.

Generative Furniture Design with Rhino and Grasshopper

During this 5-day workshop you'll learn to create and edit accurate free-form 3D NURBS models.

This fast-moving class covers most of Rhino's functionality, including the most advanced surfacing commands. In addition, this workshop gives students a functional understanding of Grasshopper and parametric design, so that they can build on this understanding to more advanced projects of their own.

During the training at our RhinoFabStudio, you will learn to customize Rhino + Grasshopper to improve and accelerate your furniture designs through generative modeling. The class also covers information on fabrication techniques with 3D Printers or laser machines and optimization and fabrication using RhinoCAM and RhinoCAM NESTING for CNC machines.

New Rhino to CL3VER plugin


Architects, industrial and product designers can now create browser-based interactive 3D presentations of their Rhino 3D models without the need for programming. The new plugin is in beta, so new users are invited to provide feedback to the CL3VER support team if they experience any problems with the importing process.
The new CL3VER plugin for Rhino 5 lets Rhino users export their 3D models directly into the CL3VER editor where they can create immersive experiences for clients and stakeholders. The plugin imports geometry, hierarchy, materials, and textures from the original model. Rhino is used in several industries and sometimes in combination with other 3D modeling software. Since CL3VER is an agnostic platform, one presentation can contain models created with different software, making it a very powerful tool for those who do not rely on a single software technology for design development.

Creating light with Rhino


As an in-house project, FATHOM, a 3D printing specialist, created this ethereal chandelier.

Using Rhino to create the CAD models with the surfacing texturing tools, a prototype was created to showcase FATHOM's capabilities.

Rhino's complex geometries were used to create the lighting effects and the structural stability in the dish's form.

Rhino in a botanical garden




Another fan is raving about Rhino's capacity to model complex shapes. This one is in Ketchum, Idaho.

The collaboration for the Ellen Long Garden Pavilion at the Sawtooth Botanical Gardens started with the architect, Jolyon Sawrey. Sawrey drew up the pavilion roof for size, height, basic shape, and other features like electrical and site placement.  To figure out the roof parts he then contacted Bill Amaya of Cimarron Lofting. Amaya took the architectural drawings and, using Rhino to completely model the roof, detailed the parts, changing the shape only as needed. He then "pulled" rafters, metal skin, header ring, and the top compression ring off the drawing and sent them to the metal fabricator to bend and laser cut. The metal fabricator, David Swaner, of D-Swaner Welding, then assembled, delivered, and installed the roof parts.

For Cimarron Lofting, the key was to figure out the placement and shape of the rafters. Amaya commented, "I would not know how to do it without Rhino. It was just a shape and a problem that does not lend itself to mathematical insight."
