Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2013
The 4th Design Modelling Symposium Berlin “Rethinking Prototyping” will take place at the University of the Arts in Berlin, Germany, from Saturday September 28 until Wednesday October 2, 2013.
As in previous years, the Symposium consists of two parts, two days of Workshops and Master Classes (including Rhino, Grasshopper, Sofistik, Firefly, Arduino, RhinoScript, RhinoPython, RhinoCommon SDK and KUKA|prc) followed by a three-day Conference with Keynote Lectures, Case Studies and Poster Sessions.
Design modelling has benefited from computation but in most projects to date there is still a strong division between computational design and simulation leading up to construction and the completed building that is cut off from the computational design modelling.
The Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2013 would like to challenge the participants to reflect on the possibility of computational systems that bridge the design phase and occupancy of buildings. This rethinking of the designed artifact beyond its physical has had profound effects on other industries already. How does it affect architecture and engineering?

Acoustics and aesthetics in Iowa
LMN Architects have added another performing arts facility to their portfolio. This one is the School of Music Building, University of Iowa: 700 seats, 946 unique acoustic panels.
The building's concert hall features a suspended acoustic ceiling canopy. Its intricate latticework provides strategic openings for the audio speakers, stage and house lighting, the fire sprinklers, while concealing the structural truss work.
To visualize the concert hall, LMN fabricated a three-foot scale model, plus a few full-sized components, on the firm's 3-axis CNC mill.
Many consultants contributed to the design using different digital formats. The acoustical consultants used SketchUp. The lighting designers used Revit. The theater and audio/visual consultants saved their specifications as DWG files. All of these programs were compatible with Rhino and, using Rhino's Grasshopper plug-in, LMN was able to incorporate all the consultant's information.
The project resulted from the damage of the 2008 flood and is now expected to be completed in 2016.

ROB|ARCH 2014: Second Call for Workshop Proposals
Workshops: May 14-16, 2014 / Conference: May 17-18, 2014
ROB|ARCH has been initiated by the Association for Robots in Architecture as a new conference series on robotic fabrication in architecture, art, and design, closely linking industry with cutting-edge research institutions. In December 2012, its founders hosted the conference in Vienna, Austria. In 2014 the conference travels to North America, hosted by the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, with Wes McGee and Monica Ponce de Leon as conference chair.
Continuing with the previous theme of international collaboration, the conference brings together artists, designers, fabricators, and industry leaders to advance the discourse surrounding robotic fabrication. Following the success of Rob|Arch 2012, the conference will again present a series of workshops held at select research institutions on the East Coast of the United States, aimed at exposing the advanced capabilities of applied robotic research. Following the workshops, the conference will span two days at the University of Michigan Campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan, about an hour outside of Detroit, the origin of robotics in North America. The internationally renowned publishing house Springer Wien/New York will publish and market the conference proceedings worldwide.
For the 2014 event, we are extending a call for workshop proposals. The conference invites proposals by institutions and individuals for workshops related to robotic programming and fabrication until June 15, 2013.
Additional robot capacities by the workshop hosts, University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon University, and/or industry partners can be made available to the chosen proposals. A total budget of 15,000 USD is available to support the workshops financially.

DYNAMIC FIELDS Workshop and Conference, Bucharest (Romania)
Parametrica [Digi Fab School] from Bucharest, Romania, invites you to DYNAMIC FIELDS Workshop and Conference (July 15-28, 2013) to participate in the digital design build project, seeking to create an inventive collaborative environment. The workshop is part of a series of PARAMETRICA events, promoting computational design thinking and exploring the new possibilities of parametric design.
Key lecturer and Jury: Patrik Schumacher (Zaha Hadid Architects)
Workshop Concept (July 15-27, 2013):
The future of structures lies in their ability to utilize and respond to the energy which exists in the environment surrounding them.
In this 14-day workshop the various energy fields which exist in a given environment (wind, water, sun, sand etc.) will be identified, analyzed and then simulated, after which experimental structures will be generated and fabricated such that their performance will act as a continuous real-time response to these environmental parameters.
Conference Concept (July 28, 2013):
During this day we will present the final workshop projects and our special guest, Patrik Schumacher will explore the subject of computational design thinking and parametric architecture.
Objectives:
The workshop objectives are two-fold. In the first phase the workshop focuses on the identification and analysis of resources inherent to the environmental context, thus developing a better understanding of their nature as well as optimized methods of use or response. In the next phase, the objective is to generate structures which through either means of fabrication or material properties can respond to, or utilize the environmental energy sources.

Rhino Python weekend workshop in Boston
In this 2-day weekend workshop, you will be introduced to algorithmic design for those with no programming experience. You will have the tools to work through geometric ideas in a whole new way.
Are you sure? Have you checked?
Are you checking your designs early and often?
There is no reason not to. The simulation and analysis tools for Rhino 5 keep getting better.
Scan&Solve™ has always provided finite elements in Rhino without meshing. Now they are offering two additional extensions to their tools.
First is SnSMesh. This version of Scan&Solve™ allows users to perform stress simulation on mesh geometry within Rhino. This version has the same functionality as the latest edition of Scan&Solve™ but works directly on closed meshes created in Rhino or imported from other applications that can export .stl, .wrl, .ply, and other mesh formats recognized by Rhino. That means you can directly analyze any part that you can 3D scan. No need to first reverse engineer.
Second is SnSScript. This scriptable version of Scan&Solve™ allows users to automate simulation processes that otherwise require user interaction. In the scriptable version, most of the functionality of the original Scan&Solve™ plug-in is exposed for calls from RhinoScript, including simulation setup, simulation computation, and solution visualization and querying.

Art meets 3D Printing
Art meets 3D Printing with Type A Machines
Xylem is a product of the collaboration between designer Bryan Allen and sculptor Stephanie Smith. It is based on the translation of natural forms through analog to digital 2D representation and analysis into a re-physicalized 3D form. The final form evokes the Xylem layer of tree cells: reducing structure and enclosure to a minimum while still maintaining form.
Using a Type A Series 1 printer in conjunction with Rhino 5 design software, the form was fabricated as 44 individually PLA printed panels. For two months straight the printer ran non-stop without failure producing all the compete components with registration numbers for placement. The parts were assembled on site by the artists.
Force Based Design: Bauhaus Summer School
This two-week interdisciplinary course lays the foundations of a force-based design through theoretical lectures and presentations. Various examples will show that structure efficiency depends largely on the flow of forces within the structure. Possible optimization strategies will be discussed in the light of material saving and their impact on architectural form.
This course will introduce you to digital analysis and optimization tools. You will learn to deal with three-dimensional parametric software (Rhino, Grasshopper, SOFiSTiK, Karamba, Geometry Gym, Kangaroo).
Finally, the knowledge acquired will be applied to designing a pedestrian bridge or a slender tower.
Participants will be able to recognize the effects of forces as design parameters. They will recognize the potential of building geometry in the context of architecture and resource-efficient designs.
