Fologram Augmented Vision Workshop, September 7-9, Barcelona (McNeel Europe)

Fologram Augmented Vision Workshop
September 7-9, 2022
10 AM–6 PM CEST
McNeel Europe offices, Barcelona, Spain

The Fologram augmented vision workshop is a 3-day in-person course led by the Fologram team Gwyllim Jahn, Cameron Newnham, and Nick van den Berg. Participants will learn how to create custom mixed reality applications for design and fabrication using Rhino, the Grasshopper and Fologram toolkits, and the HoloLens 2. Furthermore, 1:1 prototypes will be used as demonstrators to gain awareness of the unique advantages of mixed reality for the fabrication of complex design models. Thus, participants will come away from the workshop with a better understanding of the new fabrication capabilities and how these might impact the feasibility of certain designs. During the workshop, the HoloLens 2/ research mode and internal builds of the Fologram software will be available to experiment with features not yet available in public apps.

The workshop is for educators, researchers, and design practitioners looking at mixed reality application development in Rhino and Grasshopper to integrate new tools, and processes into the existing digital fabrication curricula or workflows.

Day 1: Event-Based Parametric Modelling
  • Introductory lecture on mixed reality fabrication/state of the art
  • HoloLens and Setup, calibration and best practices, gestures, menus and Apps, device streaming
  • Fologram installation, connecting and viewing models
  • Fologram for Grasshopper, syncing geometry and parameters, tracking hands, devices and gestures, detecting device state, selectively running parts of Grasshopper definitions using state, getting and setting global variables
  • Example applications
Day 2: Sensor Feedback Guidance
  • Discussion and preparation of individual projects
  • Discussion of sensor data (tracking markers and 3D scans)
  • Feedback with marker tracking, tracking QR codes and aruco markers, smoothing marker data, tracking physical objects with mounted codes, comparing marker positions to target positions
  • Feedback with depth scans, enabling Research Mode, installing Twinbuild Research, preparing models for depth scanning
  • Prototype Design, Introduction to Chromodoris for voxelization and isosurfacing, example design systems and models
  • Design exercise, discussion, review and design selection, rationalization and preparation for fabrication
Day 3: Mixed Reality Fabrication
  • Environment setup, material setup, demonstration of techniques
  • Fabrication, completing the prototype, post-build 3D scan
  • Review and discussion of prototype results as well as implications and applications
