Daylight Simulation and Optimization online workshop by Adrian Krezlik and Rafael Campamà Pizarro, November 9-11

Daylight Simulation and Optimization
online workshop
November 9–11, 2020
10 AM–5 PM CET
Hosted on Zoom by McNeel Europe

McNeel Europe presents Adrian Krezlik, PhD ‌candidate‌ ‌at‌ ‌‌the Center‌ ‌for‌ ‌Studies‌ ‌in‌ ‌Architecture‌ ‌and‌ ‌Urbanism‌, University‌ ‌of‌ ‌Porto, and Rafael Campamà Pizarro, PhD candidate‌ in the field of Energy and Building Design at the Architecture and Built Environment department of Lund University, for a 3-day online course about daylight simulation and optimization using Grasshopper, Honeybee and Ladybug.

The goal of the training is to teach architects and engineers the principal concepts of contemporary daylight techniques. The course covers multiple topics ranging from Climate Based Daylight Modelling to Circadian Rhythm. The participants will learn how to simulate daylight autonomy, glare, daylight factor, and other key concepts of the most popular sustainable certificates, such as LEED, BREEAM, Living Building Challenge or WELL. Further, the training introduces how the circadian rhythm can be used in design to foster human well-being and energy efficiency in building design. During the training, participants will elaborate on parametric models to test the mentioned concepts based on specific case studies.

Day 1
  • Introduction to Daylight in Architecture.
  • Daylight performance demands in European norms and most popular certificates: LEED, BREEAM, DGNB, Living Building Challenge, and WELL.
  • Daylight physics, sun position, radiation rose, local daylight conditions.
  • Exercise 1: Sunlight hours on the façade. Introduction to daylight modeling in Grasshopper, Honeybee and Ladybug.
  • Exercise 2: Designing to meet LEED daylight requirements. Daylight autonomy.

Day 2
  • Optimization: Introduction.
  • Exercise 3: Single objective optimization to enhance daylight conditions.
  • Exercise 4: Designing to meet BREEAM daylight requirements. Daylight factor.
  • Exercise 5: Annual sunlight exposure.
  • Exercise 6: Useful daylight illuminance.
Day 3
  • Exercise 7: View-out factor.
  • Exercise 8: Daylight Glare probability simulation.
  • Multi-objective optimization.
  • Introduction to circadian rhythm and alertness.
  • Exercise 9: ALFA for Rhinoceros. Designing for WELL certification.
  • Living building challenge and daylight.
Course requirements: Basic knowledge using Rhino and Grasshopper.
