Rhino to Cinema 4D and back!

Rhino.io is a connection and import/export plugin that lets you directly open and save native Rhino files (3DM) from within MAXON CINEMA 4D. In addition, models that were changed in Rhino can be updated into CINEMA 4D while keeping material assignments and other changes inside CINEMA 4D intact, enabling you to work with Rhino and CINEMA 4D side by side.

Rhino could therefore act as a NURBS plugin for CINEMA 4D, connecting the best of both worlds. Rhino's precise and extensive CAD and NURBS toolset can be combined with CINEMA 4D's modern and flexible texturing, shading, and lighting tools.

Models imported with rhino.io are also ready to use for any high-quality third-party rendering engines such as V-Ray for C4D, Maxwell, Fryrender, and more.

Rhino.io is available for a limited time introductory price of 79 EUR. The regular price will be 99 EUR.

Collaborative Cloud project

Collaborative Cloud is an installation which investigates distributed and decentralized design and fabrication. The interface (in the link above) allows you to design and give information to a piece of the cloud, thus anyone can participate in the project’s growth over the next 8 months. The physical construction will take place at the Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHUB) in an exhibition titled: LABORATORI DE FABRICACIÓ:Nous escenaris del disseny i la producció tridimensional.

The Collaborative Cloud is a project created by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (iaac.net), organized by the DHUB, and designed by Luis E. Fraguada, Victor Viña, Areti Markopoulou, and YOU!

The project was designed using processing for the interface, and Grasshopper/RhinoScript for geometry and population. Once a user submits a design, the interface outputs a data file as well as a PDF of the piece ready for fabrication. As the database grows, these files are matched with a potential position on the cloud.

Fabrication Laboratory exhibition and workshops, Barcelona

Fabrication Laboratory
Disseny HUB Barcelona (DHUB)
June 15, 2010 - May 29, 2011

New scenarios in 3D design and production

Fabrication Laboratory, organised by the DHUB, consists of not one but a series of activities (exhibitions, real-time fabrication laboratories, workshops, lectures, etc.) that offer a comprehensive overview of 3D digital manufacturing technologies, a new reality in constant evolution that is producing a fundamental transformation of design and production processes.

The exhibition format of the Fabrication Laboratory is an open infrastructure, allowing its initial form to be changed and expanded as new content is produced. As a result, the laboratory will gradually consolidate a process of ongoing analysis of the new scenario in production.

The objects developed using new technological tools (such as CNC software and machines) and the ability to individually customize mass production (mass customization), together with open source design systems (interactive algorithms), are calling into question the future of the traditional model/series approach of industrial design.

Digital fabrication technologies offer new opportunities for design professionals in the 21st century and are ushering in a more flexible project methodology capable of adapting to meet different and changing needs.

The impact of this new technological paradigm is felt in every phase of the production process, from concept to materialization, from distribution to consumption. Moreover, it is paving the way to the promise of participation, personalization, and the practicability of the unique piece.

AA Visiting School - Tel Aviv July-August 2010

Bad Mesh & Naked Edges
David Azrieli School of Architecture - Tel Aviv University
Sunday 25 July to Wednesday 4 August 2010

AA CSI 2010 is the second of three annual summer workshops focused on developing innovative methods for synthesising drawing and 3D printing. Working with Objet Geometries high resolution, multi-material liquid 3D printing technology, participants will be involved in an intensive ten-day program of making and testing 2D, ‘thick 2D’ and 3D digital printing techniques to invent architectural surfaces.

The workshop program is inspired by British pioneers of art and architectural representation – Joseph Gandy, Robert Adam, James Stirling, David Hockney and John Outram – and informed by Israel’s unique cultural heritage of textiles and ceramics. The workshop is the testing ground for AA Intermediate Unit 9’s ongoing experiments to blur the boundary between drawing and 3D printing. The objet trouvé, exquisite corpse and other Surrealist and Dadaist techniques form the basis for these investigations. The workshop’s objective is to deliver an atlas of prints (working with measured drawings from non-architectural disciplines) from each participant (a ‘3D takeaway’) that they will incorporate into future projects and publications, giving the workshop a wide-ranging material and intellectual influence.

Participants will work in at least two of four different AA -led design units over the ten days. The teaching staff also includes Eran Neuman and Aaron Sprecher of Open Source Architecture. In addition to advanced software tuition, there will be regular evening lectures (invited speakers include Neri Oxman and Erez Ella) and workshops including a hands-on working session with Objet Geometries chief software engineer, Yossi Abu. The final jury will be a day-long presentation/exhibition at the ZeZeZe Gallery in the Tel Aviv port.

Rhino, Grasshopper and Maya will be the key software tools used at the workshop.

LaN summer workshop Barcelona

LaN announces its third On Site Barcelona workshop August 23rd through 29th at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC): Live Parameters.

One of the key elements in any associative design model is the data to which it responds. The ‘Live Parameters’ workshop will investigate several modes for interacting with real time, real life data using a combination of existing data libraries and prefabricated sensory nodes. The workshop will use the 22@ Innovation District in Barcelona, Spain, as a data source as well as a test bed for spatial configurations generated from the recorded data. Participants will engage these topics through Grasshopper, a generative modeling tool for McNeel’s Rhino. The workshop will work with the Fab Lab BCN for prototyping and fabrication.

LaN Directors Monika Wittig and Luis Fraguada will direct the week long seminar on associative design and production.

Contemporary advances in design are shaped by computational design methods, strategies and technologies, regardless of whether these advances are manifested in the design and construction of a building, in related theory and analysis, or in the ways in which future designers and scholars are educated. Architectural computation in the post-digital era calls for new ideas that will transcend conventional boundaries and support creative insights through design and into design. “Circuit Bending, Breaking and Mending” provides an interdisciplinary context for challenging traditional paradigms and invites researchers and practitioners alike to (re)consider and (re)address design and computation with a particular focus on three themes:
  • Innovative design conceptualization and support through computational theories and technologies.
  • Enhanced knowledge of architecture and design through computational analysis.
  • Improved approaches to design education through computational thinking and applications.

CAADRIA 2011 invites submissions of original research papers, posters and exhibitions on topics related to computer-aided design, including but not limited to:
