Since 2009, numerous third-party plugins have been developed to improve interoperability between Autodesk’s BIM software Revit and McNeel’s Rhino/Grasshopper, with varying success in user-friendliness, performance, and extensibility. The release of Rhino 8 and the introduction of Rhino.Inside (Rhino 7) has significantly enhanced integration, enabling flexible, efficient workflows and easier use of the extensive ecosystem of Rhino/Grasshopper plugins in shared workflows with Revit. Rhino.Inside .Revit also allows developers to create custom Grasshopper components (using C# or Python) that can directly access the Revit API within the same runtime environment.

The 3-day workshop, led by Junghwo, is designed for Revit users interested in learning Rhino and Grasshopper, as well as Rhino and Grasshopper users looking to explore Rhino.Inside.Revit. It also targets BIM creators, coordinators, and managers seeking to implement parametric BIM workflows. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of Rhino.Inside, explore BIM management use cases and learn BIM workflows using Rhino.Inside, alongside useful Grasshopper plugins for parametric BIM design.

The Bill Please: A new well-being quantity takeoff interface for Rhino and VisualARQ

The Bill Please (BP) is an integrated interface within the hybrid Rhinoceros-VisualARQ workflow, designed to generate precise and detailed quantity takeoffs for every modeled geometry. Estimate materials and costs accurately.

In a BIM-oriented framework, BP is engineered to extract any type of quantity, offering the flexibility to select from various measurement units to meet specific requirements, including weight computation. 

The following types of quantitative analyses are supported:
  • Component-based and subcomponent-based analysis (VisualARQ components)
  • Quick mode, "space-to-space", leveraging VisualARQ's va_spaces
  • Surface-based analysis, utilizing the "Paint Mode" to extract quantities (areas) from individual geometric faces (Rhino and VisualARQ native geometries)
The Advanced Mode for multilayer components (va_wall, va_roof, va_slab) enables accurate quantity calculations for each layer. BP also supports the use of custom QTO templates and the creation of structured category sets (worksheet name) to generate reports in XLS format.

Advanced features include editing aggregated reports thanks to a double checklist (selected and aggregated items), enabling efficient navigation and precise identification of every computed element. Each geometry is tagged with a comprehensive descriptive text string (GUID, component name, dimensions), with the option to define a prefix from the available properties.

It's a weighty dialog and history of Rhino and its cultural implications, with a different focus than typical articles about Rhino. Per Canizares, the broad effect of Rhino is not just technical but also community-focused.


The background information was gleaned from various publications, the Rhino discourse forum, food4Rhino, and press releases.

Join us for a comprehensive, hands-on, three-day workshop designed to introduce participants to key topics in environmental design: energy, daylight, and thermal modeling with Ladybug and Honeybee.

The workshop is hosted by Dosta Tec, an engineering and technology company specializing in sustainable buildings. This face-to-face training offers a unique opportunity for formative learning. It is led by Mateo Barbero, an experienced energy engineer, and Adrian Krezlik, an architect and PhD researcher at the University of Porto's Faculty of Architecture.

After completing the workshop, you'll have valuable knowledge on energy modeling, thermal comfort, daylight, and the environmental impact of buildings with Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug tools, and Honeybee.

Day 1

On the first workshop day, fundamental concepts in architectural environmental modeling will be introduced, exploring the influence of climate change, bioclimatic design, and future climate modeling. Following this introduction, modeling tools, workflows, and best practices are presented. Participants engage in hands-on exercises, crafting their definitions, and will actively apply the concepts learned.

Day 2

Participants kick off by creating a basic energy simulation for a case study. They then work closely with the tutors to augment the model, incorporating details such as program specifics and construction systems and calibrating it accordingly. Following a theoretical overview of thermal comfort, participants apply their knowledge by modeling human thermal comfort.

NextFEM-Link for Grasshopper now available—a new (free) tool for structural analysis


NextFEM Designer is a free tool for structural analysis for Windows that supports different solvers, such as OOFEM, OpenSees, and CalculiX, and can handle models from more than 20 formats.

Now, you can use it with Rhino 8 and Grasshopper with the brand-new NextFEM-Link for Grasshopper, which brings some components to export the Rhino model to NextFEM Designer and a .NXF (NextFEM format) file. In addition, some query tools are available to use quantities in the model, such as nodal coordinates and element connectivity.

You can use Rhino 8 to model complex geometries and NextFEM-Link to translate them automatically into a NextFEM model, which can be seamlessly analyzed in the solver you prefer or even exported to other proprietary formats.

In its first release, NextFEM-Link translates curves and meshed entities to linear and planar finite elements. Instructions on its use are available.

Finally, NextFEM always listens to the needs of its users; feel free to request new functionalities using this form.

Workshop: Design and Parametric Fabrication by ControlMAD (Winter Edition)

Winter edition workshop

The course focused on getting knowledge in 3D modeling with Rhinoceros and Parametric Design with Grasshopper, obtaining real results by constructing a large-scale prototype as a final project thanks to digital fabrication tools.

Students not only learn how to 3D model but also implement various strategies to obtain structures of complex models, analyze, calculate, interact with the physical environment, etc., with the chance of manufacturing different models with CNC technology, like cutting lasers, milling machines, and 3D printers. The final goal is to create, design, and 3D model a cool object, prototype, or sculpture using Rhino and Grasshopper and make it real with the digital machines we have.

This X edition will be a hybrid format: Part I full online sessions. Part II (optional) can be followed online or onsite.

She has a background as an academic researcher and is still regularly involved in workshops and conferences concerning digital strategies in architecture. She has been a guest lecturer at universities worldwide, focusing on parametric approaches to face the emergent complexity of architecture.

Spherene is an API and a plugin for Grasshopper that helps to minimize material and maximize strength. It allows designers to create optimal material properties for various 3D printing methods, minimizing the need for support and speeding up your CAD workflow.

In this free workshop, you will learn what Spherene can do and how to apply it to footwear through two use cases taught by expert teachers: René Medel (Senior Digital Creation Engineer at Framas) and Jesus Marini Parissi (Computational Design Engineer at Moon Rabbit Adaptive Lab).

This workshop is streamed live online, but if you are in Barcelona for Footwearise, you can join in person. The first part of the workshop takes place at our Footwearology lab, and the second part is at the European HQ of McNeel, the company behind Rhino and Grasshopper.

The spherene workshop is meant for design professionals with at least a basic to intermediate knowledge of Grasshopper.

This webinar explores Rhino 8’s scripting environment, particularly the new Python 3 component, and how it enables direct integration of ML (Machine Learning) models, such as regression or classification, for design optimization. While generative AI is often in the spotlight, many practical challenges in the AEC industry are better addressed with these models, which can significantly improve workflow efficiency.

One revisited project, LearnCarbon, showcases the potential of this integration. Initially, the project involved extensive data cleaning and model training using NumPy, Pandas, TensorFlow, and Keras, with predictions linked to Grasshopper via Hops. This workflow depended on external plugins and background scripts, leading to stability issues.

With Rhino 8’s new Python 3 integration, these models can now run directly within Rhino, eliminating the need for external plugins and improving workflow stability. This integration enables new possibilities: 
  1. Accelerating slow processes by generating synthetic datasets in Grasshopper, or even utilizing existing ones, using ML to predict outcomes, and bypassing traditional computationally heavy simulations.
  2. It allows for reversing model relationships—such as in LearnCarbon, where a model trained to predict embodied carbon based on materiality can now recommend optimal materials based on a target emission factor.

Iliana Papadopoulou is an architect and software developer who has led initiatives on spatial computing, machine learning, and interfaces. Her work spans all scales, from creating immersive virtual spaces to optimizing the performance of large urban layouts worldwide with neural networks. Footwearise, hosted by international innovation platform Footwearology, unites all companies striving towards a common goal: to produce footwear close to market, on demand, with options for customization, from renewable and regenerative materials, including feasible and profitable retail and end-of-life systems. The event includes an exhibition, conference, and networking opportunities, as well as a curriculum of workshops and demos in the days after.

The focus is not just on 3D printing but also knittingmolding, and any other technology or software that aims to improve how we designmanufactureuse, and reuse shoes.

In this beginner-friendly course, you’ll learn how to create and extract technical drawings from 3D models in Rhinoceros, an essential skill for effective communication in design, architecture, and engineering. The course will cover everything you need to know about setting up scales, dimensions, annotations, lineweights, and linetypes to transform your 3D models into clear and professional technical drawings.

The course is led by Agata Kycia, an architect and researcher with over 14 years of experience in Rhinoceros. Agata specializes in computational design, digital fabrication, and material science. She earned her doctorate from TU Berlin for research on self-shaping textiles and currently teaches CAD and generative design at the International University.

You will learn how to: 
  • Create a 3D model of a bottle and use Rhino’s Layouts to extract various 2D drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, and perspective views.
  • Divide complex 3D models into smaller parts to create detailed cutaway sections and exploded-view drawings, ideal for explaining intricate designs.

In this webinar, Simon Aulis Kallioinen will demonstrate the process of creating the music video for his song Nutritious Soil. The video was made using Grasshopper and is entirely based on line graphics. It uses skeleton tracking data from a Kinect and relies heavily on MIDI data from the song's recording to trigger the graphics and events. 

The webinar will provide an overview of the Grasshopper script, as well as delve into techniques relevant to creating animations in Grasshopper, such as triggering events from timecode, creating smooth transitions, and incorporating data from external formats—such as MIDI data—into time cues in Grasshopper.

About the speaker:
  • Simon Aulis Kallioinen is an architect at FOJAB in Stockholm, Sweden. He primarily focuses on analysis tools, computational design, and carbon footprint calculations, using Grasshopper as his main tool. He is also a passionate musician and songwriter under the alias Simon Aulis, with the piano as his primary instrument.
