Two new books for jewelry designers!

Dana Buscaglia has published two new books to demonstrate and teach using Rhinoceros 7.0 for the design and creation of jewelry modeling.

The first volume covers basic Rhino commands and the 2D project creation. The second volume covers basic Rhino commands and the 3D project creation. The chapters are in tutorial format with step-by-step instructions that gradually build a knowledge base, becoming more advanced in later chapters.

Dana Buscaglia’s 40+ years of experience in jewelry ranges over various segments of the jewelry industry. After designing and executing her line of contemporary jewelry for 13 years, Dana moved to a more commercial side and took design jobs at Jacmel Jewelry and then at Avon. Both experiences exposed Dana to the different worlds of jewelry design and mass production.

As outsourcing became important, involving the transmission of accurate product design and description to contractors worldwide, Dana became interested in Computer Aided Design to easily and accurately transmit drawings and layouts. She became adept at AutoCAD and then branched into Rhinoceros because of its ability to create both drafted 2D drawings and 3-dimensional models.

Dana’s design experience is an advantage when translating the work of other designers into technical drawings and layouts or 3-dimensional digital models for prototyping.

Dana has also become a licensed Rhino instructor and teaches Computer Aided Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

The books are available at Amazon, Lulu Publishing, Barnes & Nobles, and others.

DesignMorphine Masters Y22/23 Degree

Everything humanity has designed so far is limited and based on how our bodies are designed and work and how they experience reality around us. However, we have reached the crossroads where technology can and will eventually shape, not only our minds, but our body as well. In this sense, designing the future entails, first and foremost, designing the body that will live that future. Challenges inevitably arise and demand innovators and pioneers to overcome them. New tools and technologies are required to materialize the answer. Limits and boundaries will be crossed, and the equilibrium will change. The compass will be a scalable notion of the human condition in this journey. Housing, transit systems, and the ways one moves around in the city, as well as the whole structure of the city itself, are essential aspects one has to consider when designing for this new reality. By changing the very unit the entire world is built around, the human body, we are no longer concerned with just designing parts of our world. We are designing the whole world we live in. It’s not a mere design process; it’s cosmogony.

Rhino User Webinar: NAAR - Architectural Nature - Natural Architecture, July 27 at 4 PM CEST

Why did Galileo Galilei say that "nature is written in the language of mathematics"?

In this webinar edition, Agustina Alaines will show us her successful use of Rhino and Grasshopper from a different architectonical point of view. What is the logic of natural systems, and can we discover and reproduce their rules according to numerical relationships and geometric patterns? These processes of exploration and creation can be carried out by analog or digital methods; however, computers help us compute vast amounts of information (inputs) to develop artificial logics or systems that, like nature, can produce infinite results (outputs).

Speaker: Agustina Alaines is an Argentine-Spanish architect, designer, and academic. Born in Buenos Aires, she graduated as an architect from the University of Buenos Aires (FADU, UBA) and specialized in Parametric Design (University of Palermo). After receiving a full scholarship, she moved to Los Angeles (USA) to study the Master of Science in Architectural Technologies at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI_Arc), where she graduated with honors.

She has extensive academic experience as the head of practical work of architectural design projects at the FADU, UBA (Buenos Aires), professor of speculative architecture and experimental urbanism at SCI_Arc (Los Angeles), of Computational Thinking at the Universidad de Los Andes (Bogota) and of the final project of the Design degree at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (Buenos Aires).

After gaining experience in renowned studios in Argentina and the United States, where she worked as Design Director and Project Manager, Agustina recently founded NAAR: her speculative architecture studio investigating the relationship between ARtificial NATURE and NAtural ARchitecture. NAAR develops responsive systems at the intersection of physical and virtual space, graphic and industrial design, science, technology, and art.

New plugin for BIM: day1bim

The plugin day1bim Tools is a set of conceptual massing and programming tools for architects, allowing them to quickly develop a project concept model and extract fundamental project information. Version 1 is now published on food4Rhino

The concept model developed can be used for simulations and representations. With Grasshopper-based connections, the geometry can be linked forward to generate native elements in a BIM environment. It’s a flexible model ready to visualize in minutes and easy to modify. It’s not about making conceiving architecture easy. It’s about making BIM elegant. It lets you work directly, intuitively refining the 3D model. The script manages the data and live updates.

From a simple arrangement of forms in solid and void, rapidly generate powerful project data for building mass and program. It’s a quick start to develop concept forms to visualize and elaborate your idea. It uses fundamental skills in manipulating geometry in Rhino. And it takes advantage of many available, but often little-known, Rhino tools that are advantageous for architecture projects. It leverages Grasshopper to manage and update the geometry and data. It works within Rhino and Grasshopper in a natural way. This help users new to modeling and algorithmic environments understand their function's logic. They access many common tools for, linking data, generating representations, annotations, and export geometry. The plugin is free for students… and very reasonably priced for commercial use.

AA DLAB London - September 1-18, 2022

AA DLAB London
September 1-18, 2022

In its 17th year, DLAB is a three-week programme in the AA London HQ’s unique atmosphere.

DLAB experiments with the integration of advanced computational design, analysis, and large-scale prototyping techniques. The programme continues to build on its expertise in complex architectural design and fabrication processes, relying heavily on materiality and performance. DLAB brings together a range of experts – tutors and lecturers – from internationally acclaimed academic institutions and practices, Architectural Association, Zaha Hadid Architects, amongst others.

The research generated at DLAB has been published in international media— ArchDaily, Archinect, Bustler—and peer-reviewed conference papers, including SimAUD (Simulation in Architecture and Urban Design), eCAADe (Education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe).

DLAB investigates the correlations between form, material, and structure through the rigorous implementation of computational methods for design, analysis, and fabrication, coupled with analog modes of physical experimentation and prototype making. Each cycle of the programme devises custom-made architectural processes by creating novel associations between conventional and contemporary design and fabrication techniques. The research culminates in the design and fabrication of a one-to-one scale prototype realized by the use of robotic fabrication techniques with to integrate form-finding, material computation, and structural performance.

The programme is structured in two stages:

Part 1 – Participants are introduced to core concepts of material processes, computational methods, and digital fabrication techniques. Basic and advanced tutorials on computational design and analysis tools are provided. The programme performs as a team-based workshop promoting collaboration, research, and learning-by-experimentation.

Part 2 – Participants propose design interventions based on the skills and knowledge gained during phase 1, supported by scaled study models and prototypes. The fabrication and assembly of a full-scale architectural intervention with robotic fabrication techniques will then unify the design goals of the programme.
