Rhino User Webinar: Swiftlet - Web APIs in Grasshopper (by Sergey Pigach), June 16 at 4 PM CEST

Rhino User Webinar
Swiftlet - Web APIs in Grasshopper (by Sergey Pigach)
June 16 at 4 PM CEST

In this webinar, we will look at Swiftlet. This Grasshopper plugin lets you make web requests directly from your GH definition. Using web services and external APIs opens up unique opportunities for data scraping, cloud computing, and live data processing directly within your favorite modeling software. As a fun example of fetching geospatial information from an online resource, we will use Google Maps API to get real-time driving directions between two points inside a Rhino model of New York City. You will also learn how Swiftlet has been used to integrate machine learning models into a cloud compute workflow.

Sergey Pigach is an Associate Applications Developer at CORE Studio | Thornton Tomasetti. Sergey’s work builds on his architectural training by bridging the domains of technology and design, driving him to develop computational tools for architects, designers, and engineers. Since joining CORE Studio, he has worked on desktop and web-based projects, including Swarm, a cloud compute solution for Grasshopper; ShapeDiver, a desktop client integration following a merger; and—most recently—Cortex, CORE Studio’s new ML platform.

New: SIMO app for urban development

SIMO software for urban development is now available!

Developed by Spatiomatics, SIMO supports integrated, data-driven collaboration for multidisciplinary urban development teams.

SIMO comes with three apps: Rhino plugin, Grasshopper components, and a standalone Data Dashboard. Model in Rhino as you always do, let Grasshopper process everything in the background and stream the unique UIM.json file to realtime analysis and data visualization.

SIMO is built by a passionate team with deep expertise in international urban development and computational design: "SIMO and UIM are the tools we always needed. We are in active development, have great feedback from our commercial customers, and have been deployed at TU Delft in the Netherlands throughout the development process! In building SIMO, we quickly realized that there were no useable urban ontologies or urban data schemas for describing Urban Information Models (aka CIM, CityBIM). So we built the UIM Data Model and Schema as well as our unique UIM Graphics standards from scratch taking the best from industry practice and other connected standards."

For a more detailed read, check out Why SIMO and UIM? Or look at the SIMO Documentation.

Visit Spatiomatics to learn more about SIMO. Get pricing and license information. Also, it is available in the Rhino Package Manager and on the food4Rhino website.

Automated Automata V1.0 Webinar by DesignMorphine

June 25, 2022, from 3 PM to 8 PM UTC
Online Webinar

Automated Automata V1.0 will explore basic to intermediate level cellular automata in 1D, 2D, 2.5D, and 3D workflow with C# and Grasshopper. These workflows lay the groundwork for using various cellular automata for architectural, engineering, or artistic purposes.

This course will start with learning what a cellular automaton is, how they look in various dimensions, and the basic “algorithm” that describes every type of cellular automata. We will then use C# inside Grasshopper to code the classic elementary (1D) automata, examine how to improve the code to achieve an incredibly massive array of possible results, and convert the output values to closed curve loops. Next, we will move on to implementing 2D and 2.5D cellular automata in a generic way that allows for custom rules, including the famous Game Of Life. The course will finish by taking the final step into 3D, where we will code a true 3D cellular automaton that looks at its 26 neighboring cells. Students will be able to export their results in a various forms, including vectors for laser cutting or plotting, bitmap images, and 3D voxel models suitable for rendering or 3D printing. This course will be 80% C# coding.

Hull Shape Assistant plugin in open beta

Hull Shape Assistant (HSA) is a new Rhino plugin providing shape modeling assistance tools focused on design, fairing, and reverse engineering.

HSA’s geometry is composed of parts that may be surfaces or a set of curves prepared for lofting a surface. HSA also accepts as an input already existing polysurfaces in one part, with no specific option to modify it.

Functionality:

  • Automatic joining and trimming of parts, according to defined limiting top, transom, or skeg shape
  • Automatic generation of flat side and flat bottom
  • Real-time information regarding distance from reference geometry, which can be points clouds, curves, meshes, surfaces or polysurfaces
  • Real-time generation of sections, buttocks and waterlines
  • Simplified control over surface curvature and zebra analysis
  • Real-time information regarding ship hydrostatic parameters – HSA will try to fill small gaps in imperfect shape if the input is non-watertight
  • Simple clipping over length
  • Simple compact panel for control of plugin functionality

Currently, HSA supports only symmetric hull shapes.
