NVIDIA Iray for Rhino looking for beta people

The Iray plugin for Rhino is in development now. NVIDIA announced that their beta program is open and they are looking for more registrations.

NVIDIA Iray for Rhino is a rendering plugin for designers who want to quickly produce physically based, photorealistic visualizations.

Iray is integrated into Rhino, rendering directly within its viewports. It gives continual, realistic feedback as you craft your model's form, materials, and lighting. Iray's physically based capability predicts the behavior of real-world materials and lights. Accurate visualizations only need a minimum setup and specialized knowledge.

NVIDIA for Rhino supports the NVIDIA vMaterials library.

How to get along with your partners

For the One Blackfriars' 50-story tower on London's South Bank SimpsonHaugh was responsible for the BIM implementation. They needed an established and common toolkit to communicate between the firms working on the project. For this, they switched to Grasshopper.

Notes Dave Moyes, the information management partner at SimpsonHaugh, "Grasshopper isn't normally associated with BIM, partly because tagging elements inside Rhino to make them BIM intelligent is quite a long-winded process, but it is a really good tool to enable the BIM process with other tools such as AECOSim."

Winners of architectural awards

Bar Raval

Phillip J Currie Dinosaur Museum
The Journal of American Institute of Architects have announced the winners in their 2015 R+D Awards.

In the online articles describing the projects, two winners described how they used Rhino and Grasshopper in their design process.

The Award for Bar Raval in Toronto, by Partisans, is noteworthy for its curves and its reminiscence of Gaudi.

The other, a Citation for Philip J Currie Dinosaur Museum in Wembley, Alberta, by Teeple Architects, goes the design direction of angles.

Both are beautiful projects, deserving of their recognition. Besides, what's not to like about a bar and a dinosaur museum?

IntoMotion // Reflections of Space, workshop in Istanbul

Explore the relationship between space and its parameters in the workshop IntoMotion / Reflections of Space

Participants will create a full-scale pavilion that is in constant feedback and interaction with its surrounding environment. The overall pavilion design will be developed in the scope of effective and selected parameters and their spatial sense. We will discuss the concepts of adaptability and responsiveness with various scenarios. We will introduce different techniques for kinetic systems and sensors.

For the first three days of tutorial sessions, we explore tools such as Grasshopper and Arduino, as well as working on selected techniques of creating kinetic systems. In the Grasshopper sessions, we will introduce Kangaroo, a physics engine plugin for Rhino, to explore form-finding strategies. Later, in the Arduino sessions, we explore basic coding and tools (sensors, motors, etc.). On the third day, participants divide into groups to develop their own interactive modules in relation to form-finding experiments for the pavilion. The groups will explore kinetic systems and investigate interaction potentials and passive systems that can be installed.

During the workshop week, the final design will be manufactured and assembled in a 1:1 scale with digital fabrication tools.

The workshop will also include lectures by international professionals, to be announced later. It will be held in the Faculty of Architecture, Istanbul Bilgi University.

Urban Network Analysis Toolbox in the news

Henry Grabar, a journalist on urban topics, recently wrote an interesting introduction and analysis of UNA for Rhino.

UNA is a mapping tool by MIT's City Form Lab. Its uniqueness is its ability to add weight to the origin and destination points of a city network. These factors can be populations, subway connections, or other data available for the city. The information can be model pedestrian flow, predict how suitable a location of a building is for its use or other issues where spatial patterns are helpful.

More information is in MIT News on the MIT Singapore Design Center, where researchers created this tool.

The plugin is free and in beta version. City Form Lab is looking for feedback and suggestions.

Next City is a nonprofit organization that provides daily online coverage of leaders, policies, and innovations in cities.
