Tutorial: From line to surface in Grasshopper

Dušan Cvetković posted a new tutorial to help architects learn Rhinoceros.

This Grasshopper tutorial, a part of the Rhino for Architects Training Program, explores the ways to create a surface from two curves.

Learn the logic behind creating randomized curves so that our surface gets that wavy effect.

Vertical gardens in Archicad with Grasshopper

Build a vertical forest using Archicad and Grasshopper, with bushes and hanging plants objects on random balconies.

This tutorial uses Archicad 23, Rhinoceros 6, and Archicad-Grasshopper Connection 3007. It demonstrates using a definition in Grasshopper to define a skyscraper with random balconies and plants.

Rhino in Revit, exploring a new workflow

Paul Wintour, founder of Parametric Monkey, introduced one of their latest tutorials:

"Rhino to Revit Workflow is by far one of the most visited tutorials on Parametric Monkey. But with the release of Rhino.Inside, a whole range of new interoperability possibilities now exist. We've been working with our clients to integrate Grasshopper scripts with Revit, and developed this quick tutorial to help them get up and running."

New Rhino 7 Grasshopper SubD component tutorial

This tutorial goes through the basic manipulation of SubD components in both Rhino and Grasshopper and how to quickly edit freeform geometry.

Rhino Grasshopper SubD tools are currently available only in Rhino 7 WIP version. Our discourse site covers more discussion on this.

Rhino.Inside.Revit video tutorials by Gavin Crump

Gavin Crump, BIM Manager at Crone Architects, is raving about Rhino.Inside—and producing a series of tutorials on bridging Rhino and Revit together.

Using Grasshopper in Revit is a massive breakthrough for computational designers. Rhino.Inside.Revit gives you access to Rhino/Grasshopper within Revit.

In this first tutorial, Gavin covers accessing Revit elements via Grasshopper, then baking them into a Rhino model.

More tutorials are in Gavin's future agenda, including reading and setting parameter values in Revit.
You can download Rhino.Inside (free if you have a Rhino 6 license).

VisualARQ Grasshopper styles tutorials

VisualARQ Grasshopper styles are those VisualARQ objects created from Grasshopper definitions. This feature lets you create your custom BIM objects with no limits of parametric features.

Learn how to create your custom VisualARQ Grasshopper styles through these tutorial series.

Once you create the new object style, you can work with it in Rhino, have unlimited copies of it with different parameters, and edit it as any other VisualARQ object. At this point, no Grasshopper knowledge is required, although Grasshopper is running in the background.

If you are familiar with Grasshopper, you will find it very easy to convert your Grasshopper definitions into VisualARQ objects.

If you are not, there are sample Grasshopper definitions available to easily follow these step-by-step tutorials.

How to create freeform stairs in Rhino

This tutorial explores how to create freeform stairs. It starts with 2D lines in a single plane, then transforms it into 3D space, and later creates 3D geometry based on the 2D data.

Quick course for Grasshopper beginners

Starting out with Grasshopper? Gavin Crump, BIM Manager at Crone Architects, has put together a brief video introduction to Grasshopper.

This video is for beginners, to be used as a launching pad for new users.

Grasshopper is a computational design tool within Rhino that enhances its capabilities. And there's an active user and developer community pushing the limits of what Grasshopper can achieve.

Another goal of this video is to form a bridge for Dynamo users.

Grasshopper tutorial: Irregular tiling

This Grasshopper tutorial uses Parakeet's Quadrilateral Tiling component to generate tiling (grid). The tiling is based on any irregular/regular Quadrilateral Curve (any closed polyline with four points and four edges).

Grasshopper tutorial: Voronoi Pattern

In this 15-minute Grasshopper Voronoi Pattern tutorial, you will learn to produce a Voronoi Pattern based on sunflower seed distribution.

The technique uses the Maelstrom component to twist a series of straight lines to produce the Voronoi cells. It's not the actual Fibonacci sequence but it's a quick trick you can use to produce a pattern similar to it.

This is just one of a series of courses by Parametric House that you can enroll in.

Recorded Webinar by Car Body Design: Designing 3D Patterns with Rhino and Grasshopper

Novedge Webinar: Designing 3D Patterns with Rhino and Grasshopper from Novedge on Vimeo

Marco Traverso is an engineer, developer, and 3D designer/consultant with over 18 years of experience with Rhinoceros. In the past seven years, he has developed workflows and tools for integrating the parametric capabilities of Grasshopper into creative concept design pipelines. His published work is visible at MarcoTraverso.it. Marco is the founder of Car Body Design, a leading website on transportation design since 2004.

One of the strengths of Grasshopper, the visual programming tool for Rhino 6, is the natural ability to process complex geometry data. For this reason, one of its most interesting applications is the creation of elaborated 3D patterns and textures, which are being used more and more in architecture, as well as in product and industrial design.

This webinar gives an overview of different design strategies and workflows used to develop a library of reusable patterns.

New Grasshopper foundation class video (in German)

Jan Philipp Drude (Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover - Fakultät für Architektur und Landschaft - Institut für Gestaltung und Darstellung) put together a Grasshopper tutorial in German that tries to lay a solid base for any computational designer.

Most of the questions he got from students in the past were related to not fully understanding the data-structures, so he tried hard to get that across in the video.

Many thanks to Jan for sharing his know how!
