Steam bent theater seating

Photographer: Greg Mooney

Rhino contributed to the renovation of Atlanta's Alliance Theatre, a project combining steam bending with laser technology.

To achieve the sinuous design and installation, Trahan Architects borrowed the form-making ideas of celebrated furniture and design artist Matthias Pliessnig.

How do you scale an artist’s handcrafted quality to outfit a 650-seat theater? Pliessnig and Trahan’s team used steam to soften hundreds of reclaimed white oak slats, and then bend them into place around the theater to create a serpentine surface along the theater's balcony railing and side terraces. The custom-shaped and -positioned slats provide outstanding acoustics inside the theater. And steam bending the wood was more efficient than milling it on a lathe.

Working with the Plaistow, N.H.–based wood fabricator CW Keller Associates, in Rhino, the team devised a model that called for approximately 100,000 linear feet of wood slats placed around the theater. In locations where the acoustics needed a reflective surface, the slats were spaced close together. Where absorption was needed, the slats were set further apart.

The curvy, undulating aesthetic required laser scanning and projection. The laser projection allowed the assembly team to take the fabricated oak panels and place them without relying on measuring tape and plumb lines. The projector projects placement points on the theatre wall.

Watch the process in the Faro video Alliance Theater, Atlanta, Georgia.

Curvahedra the new style of puzzle

Curvahedra is the brainchild of British Mathematician and University of Arkansas Math Professor, Edmund Harris, and is more than a fun and interesting new style of puzzle. With its new tagline Art + Puzzle, icreates new ways for people to engage in creative thinking through puzzle and design that everyone can enjoy. It consists of sets of identical cut pieces which link together ingeniously, without the aid of glue or tape, to build a variety of 3D structures.

Edmund does his 3D work in Rhino and Grasshopper and has written CAMel a CAM plugin to export the Code straight from Grasshopper. The individual pieces for the metal models were drawn in Rhino and then cut using the Code from CAMel.

"Instancia" wins at the XII Salón del Agua in Colombia

Congratulations to Ramón Galvis Centurión for his artwork Instancia which won first place within 158 participating works in the category Other Visual Manifestations at the XII Salón del Agua in Cúcuta, Colombia.

Instancia is an artwork which captures the significant moment in the flow of a dynamic body of water. It helps give form to the intangible and movement within a static object.

The piece was designed using RhinoGrasshopper, and Bowerbird. It was manufactured with special laser cutting machines to ensure that the pieces that made up the waffle structure were cut precisely and accurately. It was designed to be displayed suspended from the ceiling or exhibited raised 1.2 meters above the floor.

Darlene Farris-LaBar - G3D 3D Printing Lab

Darlene Farris-LaBar is an artist and designer who cofounded the G3D 3D Printing Lab that is located in the Art + Design Department at East Stroudsburg University.

Darlene is a Professor of Art + Design at East Stroudsburg University, received her MFA from the School of Art and Design at SUNY, Purchase College, a BFA from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and an MS in Digital Media Arts from the College of Technology in New York City.

In an attempt to shift her audience’s experience about the environment and transform the way they value it, she uses various technologies such as 3D modeling software Rhino and 3D printing to depict small plants and flowers indigenous to specific regions. The sculptures were designed as they appear in their natural state.

She cofounded the G3D 3D Printing Lab in 2013 and now has an operating lab fully equipped with FDM printers, PolyJet, Laser Cutter, CNC, 3D scanners and more!
