RESHAPE 15 - wearable technology competition

Today, disciplines such as programming and electronics become highly transversal, blurring old boundaries and merging different fields of knowledge. Fashion has been already highly affected by this radical change. Clothes, shoes, and other accessories can now incorporate elements of hardware and software, generating a peculiar mix between fashion and computation that is incredibly fertile and inspiring. Data becomes beauty; interaction becomes emotion. As a result, a new esthetic is emerging. Reshape focuses on this, proposing with this competition, a new challenge for makers and designers.

Ornaments for a White House Christmas tree

One of our online training students has made it to the White House! Well, not really. But his ornament has. Antar Hall entered the White House 3D-Printed Ornament Challenge and finished as one of the five grand prize winners with his ornament, Presidents of Christmas Past & Present.

The ornaments have been 3D printed and are now hanging in the East Wing of the White House for the holidays. They will later go to the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Three of the runner ups also used Rhino to create their designs: starball, Essence of the Ice, and The Christmas State of Mind Ornament.

Kangaroo wins ALGODeQ competition

To recognize outstanding achievements in algorithmic design, the first ALGODeQ international competition for algorithmic design programs has been completed. The competition gathered 190 entries from 43 countries, searching and finding innovative computational approaches in architecture. Kangeroo won the highest prize in the category 'Infrastructure as the grounding matrix for design'.

Kangaroo was in good company. The two other prize winners were RhinoVault and LMN Architecture.

Michael Hansmeyer, one of the jurists, commented, "The ALGODeQ competition proves that architects and designers are no longer limited to existing software packages --- they are instead designing their own. This frees the architects of the confines and restrictions of these packages, yet perhaps, more importantly, it demands of them a fundamental rethink of how a design comes into place."

"Almost all of the ALGODeQ approaches result in designs that would previously have been difficult to calculate, or even to conceive of. And thanks to advances in fabrication technology, these new architectures are increasingly transcending the computer screens and are rendered - physically- into the real world. An exciting time awaits us."

Kangaroo is a live physics engine for interactive simulation, optimization, and form-finding directly within Grasshopper.

GE Jet Engine Bracket Challenge

General Electric just announced the ten finalists for the GE Jet Engine Bracket Challenge.

The contest took place on Grabad.com, the famous online 3D models archive and had a key point of 3D printing technology.

Among the ten finalists there is a project entirely modeled in Rhino by Andreas Anedda and CorsiRhino.it support. They experiment in a new way of modeling in Rhino: a basic mesh was relaxed with Grasshopper and Kangaroo to obtain a fluent shape. After this first step, T-Splines was used again to edit the mesh and reinforce the bracket, creating several rims and cavity to get a stronger and lighter structure similar to a bone. Using these tools, they were able to design a bracket capable of distributing the stress in a very efficient way, creating a complex shape in a relatively short time.

“Switch to Pure Volvo” International Design pavilion

Synthesis Design + Architecture has been named the winner of the “Switch to Pure Volvo” International Design pavilion competition sponsored by Volvo Car Italia and The Plan Magazine.

Volvo’s “Switch to Pure Volvo” competition, organized by international architecture magazine THE PLAN, called for an innovative and original design for a temporary pavilion that expressed a “strong and creative identity” to showcase the car at fairs and open air presentations in Italian squares.

SDA’s approach was to use the car’s design as a flexible and sustainable vehicle as the basis to reimagine the typical trade show pavilion.  Toward this end, SDA emphasized the qualities of dynamic form, interactivity, visual impact, functionality, and efficiency to create a novel temporary structure that while iconic also offers high-performance. The design integrates structure, form, and performance by utilizing a continuous organic form composed of HDPE mesh fabric with integrated photovoltaic panels tensioned over carbon fiber rods. In fact, the digitally designed contours of the mesh fabric are what bend the rods into their curvy forms. The result calls to mind the image of an elegantly diaphanous orchid.

All modeling, form-finding, meshing done in Rhino / Grasshopper / Kangaroo / Weaverbird.

The project is currently in development and will open in Rome, Italy on September 15, 2013.

Footbridge designed in Grasshopper

Cyprus Competition:
2011 - 1st Award
Architect: Elina Pattichi
Client: The Municipality of Pafos City
IMAGE1s
This proposal for a footbridge on the Tasos Papadopoulos Avenue won the first prize in the competition in Pafos, Cyprus.

The design of the footbridge ensures safe pedestrian and cyclist circulation between the adjacent schools and the residential areas. It also creates a public landmark for this problematic boundary between the adjacent neighborhoods because of the wide avenue.

The unique characteristic of this proposal is that the construction method aims to integrate the bridge’s circulation with the support system of the footbridge. The stairs and the ramps become an integral part of the footbridge support system and are sculpted together with the main horizontal deck (95 meters long and 3-6 meters wide). So the footbridge behaves as a curved cantilever. This sculpting method is highlighted by the transformation of the landscape as the bridge foundation pushes the ground to create the steps and sitting areas on the ground. The circulation on the ground determines the landscape design with sitting areas.

In the middle of the bridge, the corridor becomes wider while the hole pattern becomes denser. This gradient of the pattern is a result of Grasshopper which aims to highlight in a macro-scale the circulation intersection in the middle of the bridge and in a micro-scale the position of the holes on the metallic panels which decrease the panel’s heat capacity, weight and wind loads and create positions for the lighting on the ground.

The bridge was modelled in Grasshopper.
