Into the Wild - design competitions by Non Architecture

Nature is the designer of this world. Since ancient history, we have always imagined and represented nature in a great many ways across history, painting it and worshipping it. Today we ended up undervaluing it.

Architects and designers have control over our built environment; by designing cities and buildings to empower rather than disconnect from ecosystems, we can change our proximity to the environment and change our physical relationship to it. Rekindling our relationship with nature is a task that architecture and urban design are well suited to tackle. Recognizing and making decisions based on nature’s value will be essential for building a better world.

Bringing nature back into our cities and enhancing existing ecological zones can deliver a truly impressive array of benefits, ranging from health and well-being to climate change adaptation and mitigation. However, reconciling cities with nature requires more than just a scientific approach.

Into the Wild is a compilation of design challenges that aim to approach the element of nature from different perspectives.

In this scenario, Rhino software presents itself as a powerful creative tool to design and develop the most innovative proposal to submit on this series of competitions.

Non Architecture - Re-Draw Competition - Casa da Música

Designers have always used drawings to communicate their ideas to the rest of the world. Drawings were considered a communication medium, used to represent abstract concepts and bring them closer to reality. It was a primordial effort of giving a shape to thoughts and narrate concepts visually.

In the digital age, where content and images dominate our daily life, the relationship with visual content drastically changes when it comes to architecture. Renown buildings are often photographed, Instagrammed, shared as a passive portrait of what architecture can look like. It's to the point that some designers design for more photogenic buildings. The result is a media-oriented image of architecture, often portrayed online by various users from the same angle, following the trending aesthetics and styles. What used to be a moment of creation, tends to become today a passive exercise of pure repetition.

Based on this paradigm, the competition series wants to encourage representation as a proactive exercise, and engage the public in rediscovering a given building, an architectural icon, proactively researching a new image, a new way to portray it, by being creative, critical and innovative.

Casa da Música by OMA—the Porto Concert Hallis the first building selected for the RE-DRAW competition series.

The “Re-Draw” competition aims to develop one visual to ‘represent’ an iconic architecture.

The participants are asked to draft one image, with absolute freedom of scale, technique, and level of abstraction.

We encourage creativeness, criticality, and innovation.

RESHAPE19| Cognified Matter competition

Reshape invites all Rhino users to take part in the 5th edition of its competition:

Reshape19| Cognified Matter focuses on future applications of Wearable Tech and Smart Products, inviting creative minds to predict new trends, elaborate on novel solutions, and recalibrate existing markets in the direction of more sustainable models.

Reshape V edition will shortlist three winners, from the Wearable Technology and Smart product category.  Additionally, two honorable mentions will be nominated for each category. The first winning designers will be awarded two scholarships* (value: 6.500 Euro) for the Design for Wearables postgraduate at IED Barcelona, and a monetary prize up to 1,000 euros.

All selected talents, winners and honorable mentions will have the chance to participate in Reshape Forum, with a free ticket pass at INDUSTRY From Need to Solution Event. Non Architecture Buying Competition

Non Architecture is a nonprofit organization whose only purpose is to
encourage and support the creation of bold innovative ideas.

We can consider Architecture everything that has already been designed or built, a realm of conventional solutions, often repeated in a self-referential system. Imagine a counterpart, a Non Architecture: a world of unexplored designs and countless possibilities, that if found, could enlarge and change the boundaries of architecture permanently. In its framework, Non Architecture is developing a series of competitions whose focus on finding innovative approaches to a specific architecture topic, always related to a functional issue. Emphasis is always pointed to nontraditional, and therefore non-architectural approaches to the architect’s work.

The 9th and final competition of the series, launched on February 1st, is Buying.

The Buying competition aims to develop design proposals for the shop typology, intended as spaceeither material or immaterialwhere goods or services are available to the public. The participants are asked to create innovative and unconventional projects, questioning the very basis of the notion of the shop.

With critical thinking and creative attitude, the participants are urged to investigate how the shopping experience can be reformed in the future, and how the concept of the shop as a space with material and immaterial characteristics can be reinvented. The proposal can be a device, a piece of furniture, an interior design project, a pavilion, a building or an urban plan. Scale of intervention, program dimensions and location are not given, and they can be arranged by the participants to suit their project better.

Eligibility: Non Architecture Competitions are open to all human beings, from every age and cultural background, working in groups or individually.

Submission deadline is April 30.

For more information, please check Non Architecture – Buying page on

IASS-Structural Membranes Symposium in Barcelona - October 7-10, 2019

FORM and FORCE (Barcelona, October 7-10, 2019), a joint International Conference incorporating:

IASS Symposium 2019
60th Anniversary Symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures

and

Structural Membranes 2019
8th International Conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures

Following the customary celebration of the IASS Symposium every ten years in Spain and the Structural Membranes Conference every four years in Barcelona, the organizers have found an outstanding opportunity to merge both communities into a joint international conference that aims to provide a forum for state-of-the-art contributions and fruitful discussion in the broad fields of shell, spatial, tension and inflatable structures.

Competition and exhibition of innovative lightweight structures: An invitation for artists, designers, engineers, and researchers

Internationally recognized and celebrated artists, designers, engineers, and researchers in cooperation with top universities from all over the world are invited to participate in a contest and exhibition of innovative lightweight structures. The structures must display a strong vision of structural design and innovation and demonstrably be the result of structural engineering focused research projects.

The exhibition aims to show new insights into structural typologies, through the design of a pavilion. The pavilions will be exhibited in the summer of 2019 and during the joint IASS - Structural Membranes Form and Force 2019 symposium in Barcelona. During the conference the contest jury, chaired by the president of the IASS, will award a prize to the most innovative realized structure.

The competition brief is to design an innovative lightweight pavilion, of maximum external dimensions 4x4x4m. It must be transportable and fit into six boxes each with a maximum external size of 1x0.75x0.65m and maximum weight of 32kg (total pavilion 192kg). The structure should reflect the structural engineering research of the submitting team. Each structure will be judged by examining the production techniques, materiality, level of structural innovation, constructability, transportability, architectural expression, and overall originality of the finished pavilion. The choices of materials, manufacturing methods, erection techniques, and so forth are at the entire discretion of each team. Innovative ideas and prototype methodologies that push the boundaries of construction are strongly encouraged.

Submission extended to January 20, 2019!

Non Architecture – Learning competition

Non Architecture (NA) is a non-profit organization, whose only purpose is to
encourage and support the creation of brave innovative ideas.

Non Architecture considers “Architecture” everything that has already been designed and/or built, a realm of conventional solutions.

Imagine a counterpart, a “Non architecture”: a world of unexplored designs and countless possibilities, that if found, could enlarge and change the boundaries of architecture permanently. NA is developing a series of competitions to focus on finding innovative approaches to a specific architecture topic, always related to a functional issue. Emphasis is always pointed to nontraditional non-architectural approaches to the architect’s work.

The next and 8th competition, launched on October 1st, with a deadline of December 30th, is Learning – Alternative Designs for Universities.
