10 reasons why every designer should learn 3D

Rhino and Grasshopper were used by BMW to create the complex geometry of the “Alive Geometry” for the Vision Next 100 Concept.

Car Body Design recently published a very nice article about
why every designer should learn 3D:

"Despite all the advancement in digital technologies, as you have probably noticed most design-related websites and magazines are still dominated by 2D images: from sketches to drawings and renders, bidimensional images are still crucial in the creative design stage – which is not a bad thing, as they are still the fastest way to visually communicate and explore new ideas.

Additionally, 3D modeling has been often associated with the creation of the final, high quality CAD models – the so-called Class A surfaces – that are used for final engineering and production. This is the task of CAD/CAS (Computer Aided Styling) specialists and it’s a very time-consuming process, guided by technical requirements rather than creativity.

All this can lead design students – as well as all those who are interested in becoming designers – to think that learning 3D is not strictly necessary.

Instead, creative designers should approach 3D in a different way: as a tool that expands their creative possibilities, increases efficiency and improves the final quality of the products.

In fact, there is plenty of reasons why knowing how to model and render in 3D is an important asset for any designer – and more than ever today.

We have compiled a list of what we think are the main reasons why any designer should really consider learning 3D."

The Brabham Evo Project by EPTA Design

Following several rumors of a possible return of Alfa Romeo to the F1 world, EPTA Design wants to pay tribute to Alfa's history and specifically to the Brabham BT46.

"The Rhinoceros software was crucial not only as a modeling tool, but also for the rendering phase.

Given the high number of textures (logos) we directly cut the surfaces with reconstructed vector logos. This has allowed to arrange the clipped surfaces into specific folders and, above all, to avoid having texturing problems (mapping) and to have to deal with heavy images (to use as high-quality textures) to make larger renderings.

Rhinoceros stands out for speed and precision and was, as always, crucial to managing a model with a high number of components.

The Maxwell rendering plugin, integrated with Rhino, gives the benefit of organizational system folders, levels, and groups for the management of the rendering."

BMW's Vision of the future

BMW celebrated its 100-year anniversary by designing a research vehicle for the future. Its show car debuted at the Centenary Event in the Munich Olympic Hall last March.

Visualizing a world where digital and analog work together, they incorporated two distinct operating modes, Ease and Boost, in the Vision Next 100. Ease is the fully-automated driving system, for the world of self-driving cars. Boost is the mode customized to the driver, typical of a current BMW driving experience.

The surface treatment includes some cues from the BMW i, as well as futuristic elements. Alive Geometry is mosaic of 800 sensor-activated triangles that form a dynamic analog display spanning the dashboard. These triangles move and turn red in response to objects in the vehicle's vicinity, to alert the driver to potential dangers. The concept is like many modern buildings, where exterior panels automatically change to adapt to lighting conditions and increase energy efficiency. Rhino and Grasshopper was used to develop the Alive Geometry pattern.

Escape from Berkeley?

Rhino user, Jack McCornack is looking to change the way we fill up our tanks. And if he figures out how to get up to a hundred miles per gallon he could win the 10 million dollar Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE.

Sponsored by Mother Earth News, Jack with his now famous car, Max, has already won the Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary) last October.

Josh Zepps from Brink on Discovery's Science Channel tracked down Jack to learn more about how a guy in his garage in Southern Oregon is taking on the automotive giants for the industry's biggest prize.
