Work with VisualARQ Grasshopper styles in Revit with Rhino.Inside

This video (tutorial) shows how to work with the VisualARQ Grasshopper styles (VisualARQ objects driven by Grasshopper definitions) in Revit running VisualARQ inside Revit.

This connection lets you work with the VisualARQ parametric objects directly in Revit, which are generated as Revit’s Furniture object types.

This workflow is possible with the VisualARQ Grasshopper components, which let you retrieve the geometry and data of VisualARQ objects and connect them with the Revit components (available in Grasshopper with the Rhino.Inside tool), and thus regenerate all geometry and data live in Revit, as native Revit Furniture object types.

INDESEM.21: DATASCAPE - International Design Seminar (May 29-June 3, 2021)

May 29-June 3, 2021

INDESEM (International Design Seminar) is a biennale founded by a group of students in 1962 and reinitiated in 1986 by Herman Hertzberger. The biennale is hosted at the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of the Delft University of Technology.

The program of the INDESEM seminar week consists of lectures, excursions, and a workshop, all organized around a specific contemporary theme. Every edition of the seminar aims to raise awareness about this theme and its consequences for architectural practice. The seminar provides an environment in which students, tutors, architects, and theorists engage in conversation and discussion about the current and future position of the architect within society.

INDESEM 2021: ‘DATASCAPE’

Today, the built environment is rapidly becoming an intersection between the physical and the digital worlds. The rise of the digital world is challenging the traditional design process. Data influences many aspects of our lives, from the ads we see on our social media feeds to the music recommendations on our Spotify pages. Every action, feeling, and step taken in the buildings we design can now be quantified. However, the impact of Big Data on our physical spaces remains unclear. How could dataabout how people live, breathe and move through the projects we createinfluence our future architectural designs?

INDESEM.21 offers you the chance to have personal conversations with architects at the forefront of the digital revolution, for example, a lecture by McNeel (Rhinoceros). Other speakers announced are Norman Foster (Foster + Partners), Patrik Schumacher (Zaha Hadid Architects), Ben van Berkel (UNStudio), Winy Maas (MVRDV), Kim Herforth Nielsen (3XN), Caro van de Venne (Barcode Architects), Wessel van Beerendonk (Studio RAP), Georg Vrachliotis (Professor Theory of Architecture and Digital Culture), Lennaert van Capelleveen (ArchiTech Company) and Sanne van der Burgh (MVRDV).

There will also be a lecture by Verena Vogler (McNeel Europe) about new Rhino and Grasshopper frameworks (Rhino.Inside, Rhino.Compute) and EU Research projects.

INDESEM has had the honor of hosting internationally acclaimed architects such as Aldo van Eyck, Adriaan Geuze, Rem Koolhaas, Wiel Arets, Ben van Berkel, Winy Maas, Daan Roosegaarde, Jean Nouvel, Shigeru Ban, Steven Holl, Greg Lynn, Peter Cook and Renzo Piano, and theorists such as Saskia Sassen, Bruno Latour, Anthony Vidler, Neil Leach and Michael Speaks.

Organization

INDESEM is organized by a student committee, consulted by renowned faculty professors. Herman Hertzberger, Wiek Röling, Michiel Riedijk and Winy Maas curated previous editions of the seminar. The INDESEM.21 board consists of Hidde Dijkstra, Tijmen Smith, Willem Damen, Inez Spaargaren, Valentin Zech, Louisa Hollander, Nadine Nossbaum and Elina Gaillard.

Into the Wild - design competitions by Non Architecture

Nature is the designer of this world. Since ancient history, we have always imagined and represented nature in a great many ways across history, painting it and worshipping it. Today we ended up undervaluing it.

Architects and designers have control over our built environment; by designing cities and buildings to empower rather than disconnect from ecosystems, we can change our proximity to the environment and change our physical relationship to it. Rekindling our relationship with nature is a task that architecture and urban design are well suited to tackle. Recognizing and making decisions based on nature’s value will be essential for building a better world.

Bringing nature back into our cities and enhancing existing ecological zones can deliver a truly impressive array of benefits, ranging from health and well-being to climate change adaptation and mitigation. However, reconciling cities with nature requires more than just a scientific approach.

Into the Wild is a compilation of design challenges that aim to approach the element of nature from different perspectives.

In this scenario, Rhino software presents itself as a powerful creative tool to design and develop the most innovative proposal to submit on this series of competitions.

Timber WH-Arena and Timber Tower in Vienna

Nicolas Sterling from Sterling Presser Architects + Engineers has been kind enough to share one of his latest project done in Rhino/Grasshopper.

The Timber WH ARENA and Timber Tower design proposal for the WH-Arena competition in Vienna has made it to the second round.

The 20,000-seat WH-Arena timber concept is rooted in nature in symbiosis with its environment. The project vision is to create a new sustainable landmark for a large-scale arena that performs at all levels of efficiency and flexibility. The dialogue between the arena, the side buildings, and the public space creates a unique combination. The architectural objects play as much role as the outer space they generate. The timber structural moiré skin is acting as the tree skin. The building maximizes natural, beautiful, and warm materials that connect us with nature and envisions a sustainable future.

The arena roof, the shape of a shallow saddle, consists of a triangular grillage of timber strips structure as a Gridnet, a hybrid of a gridshell and a cablenet. This composite construction, which optimizes the use of material while minimizing embodied energy, while using a renewably sourced timber, creates a warm feel to the space with an enhanced acoustic performance. The roof spans about 160 m lengthwise and about 130 m crosswise. The roof has photovoltaic panels on its upper side and an uninterrupted continuously closed acoustic ceiling on its underside, which is partially translucent to give the interior of the arena a striking design effect.

The integrated architecture and facade structure follows a subtle distribution to create an optical effect as one moves around the building. The roof, the façade elements, and the timber gridshell are a unique parametric model to balance structural performance and aesthetic and visual effect.

The project is great teamwork in collaboration with:

  • Thornton Tomasetti: Structure, facades, and acoustic
  • A24 Landschaft: Landscape
  • Transsolar: Energy, sustainability, environment design, MEP
  • Kunz: Fire engineering
  • Woo Architects: Arena experts
  • Yann Kersalé. Lighting artist
  • Ateliers de L’Éclairage: Lighting designer/engineers
  • SOL: Renderings
  • Xtrude.Berlin: 3D printing

Rhino.Inside® brings the power of Rhino to BricsCAD® BIM V20

Bricsys®, a Hexagon company, has partnered with Robert McNeel & Associates of Seattle, Washington, to leverage their Rhino.Inside® initiative. Bricsys is using Rhino.Inside® to bring the full power of the Rhinoceros NURBS modeler to BricsCAD® BIM V20.

Rhino integration enables a new workflow that fills the gap between early-stage conceptual design and Building Information Modeling. Using Rhino’s built-in Grasshopper visual programming language, users can create parametric concept models inside of BricsCAD® BIM.

"Algorithmic modeling tools are often used in the conceptual design phase before BIM tools are involved in the design process. The BricsCAD–Grasshopper connection bridges this gap. Then, using the A.I. functionality in BricsCAD BIM, it’s simple to convert the Rhino model into a full BIM in just a few seconds," commented Tiemen Strobbe, BIM Product Owner at Bricsys®.

Once a design concept is approved, the Rhino model can be “baked” in BricsCAD® BIM, generating native BricsCAD® geometry. This geometry can be converted into a full BIM model, including automatic classification of model elements, using BIMIFY, and the automatic attachment of compositions using the AUTOMATCH tool.
