TU Vienna - 1:1 Pavillon

TU Vienna - 1:1 Pavillon

Christian Wittmeir, Kabru and Heinz Schmiedhofer (Institut für Architektur und Entwerfen - TU Wien) organized a design studio last winter term in which Grasshopper and RhinoScript were the main working tools.

This summer term they picked one idea of a modular structure which they have developed in depth and which they are going to build in 1:1.

"Rhino has been a fundamental tool in the development of the project and the students entered into the realm of Grasshopper with great fun".

The opening date and location of this project are now confirmed: 03.10.2009 at "Museumsquartier" in Vienna.

Sponsors are welcome, please contact Christian Wittmeir.

Visit http://twoday.tuwien.ac.at/e1nszue1ns/ for additional details about this project. There is also a Grasshopper file for download explaining the kinematics of the invertible cube module.

RhinoScript & Maxwell Render Training in Dubai

July 15-18 -
Introduction To RhinoScript & Maxwell Render workshop, Dubai, UAE
In this workshop we aim to highlight two of the main reasons why designers may choose to explore design solutions via scripting. These are automation and embedding of logic. Automation being the ability to delegate tasks to the computer (thus build a computerized product) and embedding of rules being the ability to express design intentions via a set of conditional statements.

We will explore the above through RhinoScript. As this workshop is built for non-programmers, it will cover basics of programming and explore/analyze a number of Rhino scripts in order to build new ones.

We will also get a preview and explore methods to create realistic renderings with Maxwell Render.

1st RhinoScript Workshop in Dubai, June 12-14

Intro to Architectural Scripting Workshop
Dubai - June, 12-14

When CAD systems started to offer scripting abilities, design processes took a different path, one where designers not only can automate modeling operations, but also devise rules and embed logic in their exploration of form.

This workshop is built around the concept of calculating/computing design. Participants will learn how to think in algorithmic terms and express their design ideas in procedures. We will cover basics of programming and build our skills through an array of short exercises of various levels. So if you have no programming experience, this is the place to start.

The main vehicle for the workshop will be RhinoScript. RhinoScript proved to be the best platform out there to explore design-programming for beginners and experts.

  • Instructor: Maher El-Khaldi is a PhD researcher and a class instructor at Georgia Institute of Technology, Design Computing group. He received a Master of Science in Design and Computation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2007. Maher taught RhinoScripting at Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture in collaboration with Rajaa Isaa, a Rhino programming developer, and Matt Swarts, Phd student at Gatech. Maher is also Computation Director at Shape Architecture Practice + Research.
  • Fees: Professionals $500 / Students $350.
