Ladybug Tools online workshop
October 17-19, 2022
10 AM–5 PM CEST
Hosted by McNeel Europe (Zoom)
Ladybug Tools is a collection of free computer applications that support environmental design. Ladybug Tools connects 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) interfaces to a selection of validated simulation engines. The 3-day course taught by the cofounders of Dosta Tec, Adrian Krężlik and Mateo Barbero, and Dr. Emanuele Naboni, Associate Professor at the University of Parma, Italy, introduces Ladybug tools and the fundamentals of building energy performance to architects and engineers. The course covers topics such as climate change and its impact on construction, climate-based energy and thermal comfort, and daylight modelling.
Participants will learn about both theory and practice of energy modelling concepts. Parametric models in Grasshopper will be developed to simulate energy intensity, indoor thermal comfort, and daylight autonomy, to integrate standards such as LEED and BREEAM, and lastly, to adjust rural climate models to urban valley conditions.
Day 1
- Introduction to climate modelling in AEC
- Introduction to the Ladybug Tools (LBT) UI
- Climate modelling
- Energy Modelling in LBT: Rural vs urban weather model
- IPCC on building challenges; BREEAM and LEED
- Introduction to Heat Flow
Day 2
- Example of a simple energy model
- Energy Intensity and End-use. Carbon Intensity of energy sources
- Detailed Energy Model: Systems, Program & People
- Adjusting the Energy Model: Materials & their properties
- Introduction to Thermal Comfort
- Thermal Comfort Modelling
Day 3
- Daylight Physics, Sun Position, Radiation Rose, Local Daylight Conditions
- Sunlight hours on the façade. Introduction to Daylight Modelling

This course sounds great and like a lot of fun. Will you be posting these zoom video sessions to an online platform, like Vimeo with password protection, to view later? Or is this workshop more for those who are going to participate live during the session? I ask because I live in a different time zone and it would be more convenient to watch the video sessions at a different time.
Hi Carlos, due to GDPR in the EU the course will not be recorded.
