Grasshopper online workshop at PCMI

The Park City Mathematics Institute (PCMI) is offering several online workshops, including a one-week Grasshopper workshop July 19-23, Illustrating Mathematics with Grasshopper, a Visual Scripting Platform for Rhino 3D, taught by Dave Bachman.

As a predominant CAD tool in architecture, Rhino lets you build models using precise construction tools and scripting with several programming languages. It's become popular among mathematicians for creating mathematical models. Grasshopper, a tool within Rhino, allows one to build objects by an easy-to-use visual scripting language.

Grasshopper code has several advantages over traditional scripting. Most notably, you can isolate a specific element of the model and dynamically interact modify it in a large variety of ways.

Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of model building with Grasshopper. Depending on time and interest, they may explore more advanced topics such as popular plugins to enhance the functionality of Grasshopper (e.g., Anemone for looping, Kangaroo for physics simulation), interfacing with external scripts, and optimizing code for parallel processing.

The first meeting will be held jointly with the Blender Workshop so participants can understand the differences between these computer graphics packages.

The application deadline is April 5, 2021.

Fly over water

Fly over water with Lift hydrofoil surfboards!

No wind? No waves? No problem. Check out Lift, a family-run business operating out of Puerto Rico dedicated to building hydrofoil surfboards, both powered and non-powered. Lift uses high-tech lithium battery packs and carbon fiber hydrofoils to surf over the water and make everyone feel that they are flying.

Cofounder Nick Leason, an engineer and avid surfer, came up with the idea for the original eFoil. He applied the technology from smartphones, electric vehicles, and even drones into a board that would let its rider fly above any body of water without needing to be propelled by wind or waves. Nick and the designers use Rhino to develop the boards, hydrofoils, motors, and tools and use RhinoCAM for CNC operations.

BIM-based and parametric LCA with One Click LCA

In February 2021, One Click LCA launched the new plugins for Rhino and Grasshopper. The integrations developed by Bollinger + Grohmann, in collaboration with One Click LCA, combine the huge environmental database of One Click LCA with a user-friendly interface and an object-oriented structure to provide parametric and holistic LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) within the environment Rhino + Grasshopper. They enable new workflows in the early design stages regarding the comparison of embodied energy of design alternatives, automatic LCA from architectural and calculation models, optimization processes based on global warming potential, and environmental benchmarking.

Join this webinar to learn how to use the integrations and integrate them into your design process. Diego Apellániz and Panu Pasanen will be the tutors of the webinar.

In this 60-minute webinar, you will learn:
  • How to integrate LCA into your design process
  • Best practices of using BIM and parametric modeling for LCA
  • Live demonstration of One Click LCA’s new integrations with Revit, Rhino, and Grasshopper
