New creative structures at the Botanical Garden





Check out these beautiful butterfly and caterpillar volumetric structures designed by the architectural studio Interior137 Architects for the Botanical Garden of Medellín, Joaquín Antonio Uribe. 

These two large-scale structures will welcome visitors to the new butterfly garden at the Botanical Garden. 

The shapes are made of a self-supporting metal structure. The idea is for the structures to work as large containers to grow plants and become covered by vegetation with the shapes of a butterfly and caterpillar.

Architects Ana María Bustamante and David Vanegas used Rhino in the design process to visualize the sculptures in 3-D and for the development of the construction plans.

Frank P. Melendez has written a new book Drawing from the Model: Fundamentals of Digital Drawing, 3D Modeling, and Visual Programming in Architectural Design

Drawing from the Model presents architectural design students, educators, and professionals with a broad overview of both traditional and contemporary architectural representation methods. The book offers insights into developments in computing in relation to architectural drawing and modeling, by addressing historical analog methods of architectural drawing based on descriptive geometry and projection. It then transitions to contemporary digital methods based on computational processes and emerging technologies.

Drawing from the Model offers digital tools, techniques, and workflows for producing architectural design drawings, using contemporary 2D drawing and 3D modeling design software. About the author:
Frank P. Melendez teaches at The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, City College of New York. His teaching and research cover topics on architectural drawing and 3D modeling, digital fabrication, computational design, emerging materials, responsive systems, physical computing, and robotics. He has held academic appointments at Carnegie Mellon University and Louisiana State University. He has been supported through grants and fellowships, including the MacDowell Colony. Frank is a partner at Augmented Architectures, a research and design practice in New York, NY, and has professional experience working at prominent offices, including Gehry Partners, LLP and Urban A&O. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Arizona and a Master of Architecture degree from Yale University.

AA Summer DLAB is experimenting with the integration of advanced computational design, analysis, and large scale prototyping techniques. Now, in its 14th year, Summer DLAB continues to build on its expertise of complex architectural design and fabrication processes, relying heavily on materiality and performance.

The program brings together a range of experts from internationally acclaimed academic institutions and practices, including the AA Emergent Technologies & Design (EmTech) Graduate Programme staff. The research generated at Summer DLAB has been published in international mediaArchDaily, Archinect, Bustlerand peer-reviewed conference papers, SimAUD (Simulation in Architecture and Urban Design), eCAADe (Education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe).

AA Summer DLAB investigates the correlations between form, material, and structure through the rigorous implementation of computational methods for design, analysis, and fabrication. Each program cycle devises custom-made architectural processes through the creation of new associations between conventional and contemporary design and fabrication techniques. The research culminates in the design and fabrication of a one-to-one scale prototype realized by robotic fabrication to integrate form-finding, material computation, and structural performance. 

Computational skills
Summer DLAB's toolkit includes but is not limited to Rhinoceros, Processing, Grasshopper, and various analysis tools.

Eligibility
The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates, and young professionals. Prior software knowledge is not required.

Oslo's Technical Museum Foyer

Siemen Cuypers was one of the designers on this fun project, the Technical Museum Foyer. It’s the recently opened reception and shop of the technical museum in Oslo.

Using Rhino to create the structures, Siemen Cuypers did the 3D-modeling and CNC file preparation, and part of the CNC production. He provided assembly guides for Artisan Tech, the skilled people assembling, installing, and finishing the structures.

IAAC Global Summer School: India 2019



India Node: Robots in Construction

IAAC GSS19 India is a full-time, two-week course that provides both practical and theoretical knowledge. Expert tutors will lead the course, with lectures by renowned professionals and academics relevant to the topics to the course topics. These will be broadcast in the different cities: Barcelona, New York City, Hong Kong, Pune, Moscow, Tehran, Melbourne, Beirut, Budapest, Shanghai, Quito and more, all globally connected. 

Introductory sessions are organized in topics ranging from parametric and associative modeling in Rhino/Grasshopper to prototyping and electronics with Arduino. During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore form-finding strategies through theoretical and practical scripting sessions with computational design tools, investigating the material and its structural implications through KUKA 6 Axis robotic tools and scale model making. Later, they will be built as a series of digitally fabricated architectural elements in 1:1 scale, embedded with smart sensorial interaction. 

The two-week course will be led by tutors from leading design research programs, IAAC/Barcelona, BNCA/Pune and professionals in architecture and engineering. 




The host institute for the GSS 2019 India program is Digital Fabrication Lab (DFL) curated by Department of Digital Architecture at Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture for Women (BNCA), Pune, Maharashtra, India.

This workshop focuses on the interaction between visualization, computer experiment, and theoretical advances in research in geometry and topology. 

These interactions have a long history, with physical models and computer images and animations providing both an illustration of existing work and an inspiration for new developments. Emerging visualization technologies, such as virtual reality, will make more tools available for mathematical illustration and experimentation. 

ICERM brings together expert practitioners of mathematical visualization techniques and researchers interested in incorporating such tools into their research. Karamba3D workshop July 3-5, 2019 (Vienna)

Led by plugin developer and structural engineer Clemens Preisinger, along with Zeynep Aksoz and Matthew Tam from the expert Karamba3D team, this three-day workshop will focus on methods of setting up structural systems in the parametric environment of Grasshopper. Participants will be guided through the basics of analyzing and interpreting structural models, to optimization processes and how to integrate Karamba3D into C# scripts.

This workshop is aimed toward beginner to intermediate users of Karamba3D, but advanced users are also encouraged to apply. It is open to both professional and academic users.

Karamba3D is a parametric structural engineering tool that provides accurate analysis of spatial trusses, frames, and shells. Karamba3D is fully embedded in the parametric design environment of Grasshopper. This makes it easy to combine parameterized geometric models, finite element calculations, and optimization algorithms like Galapagos.

Grasshopper Course at iCreatia - Barcelona

Architectural Robotics Developer, Hooke Park, Architectural Association


The AA is seeking interesting and interested candidates for the Architectural Robotics Developer position at Hooke Park. Its satellite woodland campus in Dorset, southwest England, operates in the unique environment of an active woodland with significant timber fabrication resources. Hooke Park’s robotic facilities (based around a KUKA KR-150) are used for large scale experimental research by the school’s students and staff.

PureWeb published their new LaunchPad for Rhino plugin for CAD designers and engineers.

Use LaunchPad for Rhino to share CAD models with others directly from Rhino. Just go to a URL in your browser to view and interact with a live stream of the CAD model.

Sharing your model requires a Spaces by PureWeb account. Invite others to your account via a URL to your permanent meeting space that's part of your Spaces account.

Then stream your models. No need to share the source files or use cloud storage solutions. Make changes to the model for all the collaborators to view in the browser immediately.

Join us for the next special training session at our European office in Barcelona. Aaron Porterfield, industrial designer and founder of F=F, will lead a three-day Crystallon Workshop.

This intensive three-day course will focus on understanding and generating functional lattice structures using Rhino, Grasshopper, and the Crystallon plugin. The course will cover the fundamental understanding of lattice structures and their real-world applications, generating the necessary geometry using Crystallon, simulation and optimization using FEA and evolutionary tools, and meshing/optimization for 3D printing and production. At the finish of the class, not only will you understand the tools but how to incorporate them into your workflow and create functional models that are ready for production.

Day 1: Fundamentals
  • What is a lattice structure? A brief history of crystallography and inspiration from nature.
  • Why use a lattice structure? Applications and industry case studies.
  • Understanding the different types of lattice structures and their applications.
  • Anatomy of a lattice structure and introduction to the Crystallon tools.

Day 2: The Crystallon Tool Set

  • Voxelization - Generating uniform and conformal cells using BREPs, meshes, surfaces or curves

  • Modify - Creating a skin and connecting the lattice to the skin

This recorded webinar is a one-hour overview of Orca3D Marine CFD, showing how a model is preprocessed in the Orca3D plugin for Rhino, and then sent to Simerics MP for analysis. The Orca3D plugin and the Simerics marine template automate the gridding process and determine default values for the analysis parameters. So within minutes your model is ready for the CFD simulation of resistance or powering, including plots of parameters such as heave and pitch, viewing of streamlines and pressure on the boundaries, and animation of the simulation.

Layouts Panel for Rhino 6 for Windows available


RealDrawings is a free, open-source, Rhino 6 for Windows plugin project developed during the AEC Tech 2019: West Coast Hackathon recently held in Seattle, Washington.

The focus of the development project, and of the team, was to ease some of the pain in organizing and producing 2D drawings in Rhino.

The first tool in the RealDrawings project is a Layouts panel. This panel shows all Rhino layouts in an easy-to-use and access list. Double-clicking on a layout item in the list activates the layout, eliminating the need to use the cumbersome layout tabs. The panel also provides additional functionality, such as creating new layouts, copying existing layouts, renaming layouts, deleting layouts, and more.
