AA Visiting School Madrid - October 13-23, 2017

October 13-23, 2017

Trans-computational Membranes 5.0 will continue exploring computational design methods through digital-analog experimentation. With a focus on flexible materials, AA Visiting School has developed large-scale pavilions and installations for the last three years, integrating physical simulations into the design process.

This has facilitated the development of open-source generative digital design tools, enabling the digital manipulation of flexible materials. This year’s workshop will continue with this research, deploying advanced fabrication into digital design tools.

Workshop participants will not only explore new design methods but also adopt novel manufacturing techniques, focusing on the robotic fabrication of flexible structures. AA Visiting School Madrid 2017 will expand its domain from the digital to the physical in a seamless workflow, where design and fabrication not only coexist but also interweave at every step.

VR for Rhino User Group Meeting in London - Oct 10, 2017

SimplyRhino UK is organizing a group interested in meeting to network, discuss, and explore Virtual Reality (VR) solutions for Rhino.

At each meeting, there will be at least one presentation from a customer with experience VR, all followed by group discussion and informal pleasantries.

The first VR for Rhino User Group Meeting date is set for Tuesday, October 10, 2017, in London. We hope you can join this new group.

The meeting will start with a presentation from Grimshaw Architects:
"Grimshaw has a history of using VR in an architectural setting, including early adoption of the Oculus Rift as a fully dynamic environment, and subsequently Samsung Gear headsets for more static experiences.

Over the past year, we have been increasingly looking at using VR beyond a presentation capacity and integrating the technology into the design process. To date, this has largely been looking at using VR for design reviews through Prospect, with the hope of progressing to a modeling platform via applications such as Mindesk, and eventually developing our own tools to leverage the most from VR.

The presentation will show our experiences and progress using VR and Rhino, from early exploration for presentations to a more established review-oriented workflow."

Warka Water

Award-winning Warka Water, by architect Arturo Vittori from Architecture and Vision, is now raising a new crowdfunding campaign to build a Warka Tower in Haiti.

Warka Tower is an environmentally, socially, and financially sustainable water source for rural populations who face challenges in accessing drinkable water. The tall structure is designed to harvest potable water from the atmosphere. It collects rain and also harvests fog and dew. The air always contains a certain amount of water, depending on the local atmospheric conditions—temperature and humidity—making it possible to get water from air almost anywhere in the world.

Warka Water was fully developed with Rhino and Grasshopper.

Designing with Algorithms - A Trend in Digital Design Modeling

How do you approach algorithms for modeling? When Raymundo Burgueno sees people who use traditional software to make each component, he says "What you need is someone who is proficient in Rhino with Grasshopper."

Raymundo goes on to explain that if you have never programmed, learning to write algorithms in Grasshopper can be difficult. You have to approach modeling very differently than you do in traditional NURBS-based modeling workflows.

With Grasshopper the most powerful part of the work process is that once you have written the algorithm, you can customize it and instantly change the parameters in every step of the process. By controlling each data set you can make design changes based on other parameters, such as distance or space, in the design modeling process.

In the article in Formtrends Raymundo takes a quick look at this process.

APX+ 201.7 Workshop in Bulgaria

September 21-26, 2017
Expo Center Flora
Burgas, Bulgaria

APX+ workshop started in 2011 as the first event in Bulgaria for parametric design and advanced architectural modeling, as well as manufacturing in architecture.

APX+ 201.7 is the seventh edition, continuing the trend of the creation of practical knowledge to use the software Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. The basic seminar is two days, followed by two more days of advanced seminar learning how to model complex NURBS models. Students will create parametric definitions generating practical objects.

This intensive workshop covers most of the functionality of Rhinoceros and Grasshopper and will expose some methods for working with plugins to both programs. Issues such as BIM modeling in Rhinoceros, visualization, import/export of geometry, and real project tasks will be explained.

On the fifth and sixth days, APX+ continues with real workshop practice in which students explore digital production methods with computer-controlled machines and their relationship with digital modeling. The aim will be the creation of a real prototype at a real scale. There will then be one more day for the official opening to present the finished projects and for the diploma ceremony.

Tutors:
MArch. Octavian Gheorghiu (Foster + Partners)
MArch. Emil Burulyanov (Decor Design)
MArch. Hristo Topchiev (Topchiev Architects)
MArch. Joana Topchieva (Topchiev Architects)
MArch. Ivan Palazov (Sofa Lab)

This workshop is organized by Varna Design Forum and financed and hosted by the Municipality of Burgas.
